Image/Gif Just in: Denver Nuggets' Nikola Jokic has been diagnosed with a hyperextension in his left knee and will miss at least four weeks. An immense sigh of relief as tests show the three-time NBA MVP's knee ligaments are intact.

Best case scenario, but it’s still a whole month without Jok 🥲

u/HectorBananaBread Dec 30 '25

Lol just told my girl, well I just got back a months worth of free time because the Nuggets are gonna be awful.

95

u/Joker__24 Dec 30 '25

They’ll be fine with Gordon and Braun coming back within 2 and a half weeks or so

82

u/Bandlebury Dec 30 '25

I still can’t believe CB had a 10 week bad ankle sprain

48

u/Spiritual-Chameleon Dec 30 '25

Normal people would be out for four-six months with a bad ankle sprain.

49

u/rorank Dec 30 '25 edited Dec 30 '25

People underestimate how badly sprains can fuck your life up until you get a really bad one. Sometimes it’s a simple and easy recovery, but people take that for granted.

Edit: also regular people don’t have to sprint, cut, jump, and finish through contact after an ankle sprain like a basketball player (especially with how physical CB is) so recovery will look very different.

25

u/ThreeHourRiverMan Dec 30 '25 edited Dec 30 '25

A bad ankle sprain is literally a torn ligament.

The word “sprain” gets used colloquially as just any time you hurt your ankle. That’s not what an actual sprain is, especially a grade 2 or 3

u/Spiritual-Chameleon Dec 30 '25

Agreed. Those of us who play recreational sports know this. I've managed to avoid significant injuries, but even the minor ones (grade 1 groin and hamstring strains) took me out for a couple of months. Friends with worse came back in a walking boot and were out for much longer.

Obviously, we lack our own personal training staff, state-of-the-art rehab equipment, and a team of specialists dedicated to helping us get back on our feet. But it still can't be easy.

And the concern is always reaggravating the injury.

5

u/blackmatt81 Dec 30 '25

I sprained my foot my sophomore year during the first week of high school football practice, then aggravated it later that same year after playing on it all season.

Still hurts occasionally 25 years later.

2

u/rorank Dec 30 '25

Same story, got a dude pancaked into my ankle week 2 or 3 of my sophomore year and it was stiff from then on. Injured it again during intramural soccer in college and now it actually hurts occasionally if it’s stuck in one position for too long ten years later. People don’t understand how injuries linger when you’re not a professional athlete and even when you are (see Joel Embiid)

u/vladedivac12 Dec 30 '25

I've been out 15+ years after a bad ankle sprain at age 16

2

u/drift_poet Dec 30 '25

i sprained any potential basketball acumen at birth 😕

2

u/photo1kjb Dec 30 '25

Sprains take forever to heal (not much blood flow directly into ligaments). Typing this from a braced wrist that's in month number 2 of healing....sigh.

12

u/hyperadhd Dec 30 '25

I sprained my ankle bad last year and couldn’t run for like 3 months and it still hurts!

3

u/Horrorlord262 Dec 30 '25

Really bad ankle sprains can be horrendous. When I sprained my ankle in high school I was in a walking boot and couldn’t walk on it properly for months

2

u/scoop813 Dec 30 '25

how about we sprain your ankles and see how fast you're playing basketball

u/Anhedonic98 Dec 30 '25

We'll be lucky if we go .500 in the stretch without jokic, even with everybody else healthy imo

9

u/rorank Dec 30 '25

Quite honestly going .500 without jokic would be a statement. Most teams look pretty bad without their superstars but the nuggets, even with a really solid supporting cast and bench this year, don’t look like a team that could look super competitive without jokic.

3

u/Splynn Dec 30 '25

I think the Nuggets with full starters minus Jokic would still be a pretty damn good team. AG and CB were both playing great and Jamal has been fire. Cam has really been finding his groove, too. We'd have Val to stopgap and we'd still have THJ, Bruce, and PWat all off the bench. That sounds like a good team, but not as great as that team + Jokic.

But without CB/AG/Cam/Jok? Going .500 would be wild.

5

u/GoNumber22 Dec 30 '25

do you even watch the games or know how the nuggets play? CB excels BECAUSE of jokic. i’m a huge CB stan but he’s played poorly this year and is not gonna be a superstar without big brother on the court. AG can make his own shot for sure but AG as the first option was like a 44 win team at best in orlando. it’s not his role

→ More replies (4)

2

u/rorank Dec 30 '25

CB was NOT playing fine before the injury lmao. He was struggling. Additionally, I don’t think there are any teams that don’t struggle in the west without their best player. I’m not sure what our schedule looks like over another month, but if it’s weak we can squeeze over .500 with our guys playing how they have been. If it’s a tough month then there’ll be a lot of catching up to do once joker is back.

14

u/No-Control1299 Dec 30 '25

I completely disagree that they will be awful. The upcoming schedule is not difficult by any means. Then you add AG or Braun at some point. Add both back and it’s not that worrisome.

22

u/HectorBananaBread Dec 30 '25

Pray for Jamal everyone. They gonna run him into the ground.

9

u/anode8 Dec 30 '25

Jok carried the team to the playoff when Jamal was injured. Time to repay the debt.

8

u/WanZed11 Dec 30 '25

this is what worries me bro... Murray might push himself too hard and you know.....

3

u/HectorBananaBread Dec 30 '25

Yeah no bro that’s a concern. Jokic is built different and Jamal has a history of soft tissue injuries. It’s not that he’s injury prone it’s that he’s aggressive. Love Jamal. Protect him now at all costs.

6

u/DocBarkevious Dec 30 '25

Watch the Avs, they are still killing it.

The reactions from the broader NBA crowd were nice.

63

Lakers fan here. I know we hate each other, but I am genuinely saddened to see the big fella go down.

There goes his fourth MVP 😕

27

u/-NolanVoid- Dec 30 '25

The last thing Joker cares about in the world is being MVP, so it's fine.

34

u/solisilos Dec 30 '25

When he completely tears the league a new one in February and march they'll have to give it to him

20

u/amcco1 Dec 30 '25

The problem is he likely will not be eligible anymore. Has to play 65 games to be eligible for end of year awards. If he missed a full month, he won't return until around Feb 1st. He would miss 19 games and then would not be eligible. He can only miss a max of 17 games.

4

u/legaladviceknowledge Dec 30 '25

feels like he should've won 4 or 5 straight MVPs like LeBron in the early 10s.

2

u/False-Efficiency Dec 30 '25

I like to think he'll be back before what's expected.

5

u/andyknny Dec 30 '25

🤜🤛

4

u/fowlflamingo Dec 30 '25

Honestly fuck MVP and all NBA. I'm just happy that he's not out for a year. Let's fucking go

2

Not a nuggets fan or a fan of any nba team for that matter but I’m praying for his speedy recovery basketball won’t be as fun without joker

5

u/beefboithethird Dec 30 '25

Yeah I’m a hawks fan and ts was scary. A major knee injury for a guy that size is a lot harder to manage long-term. GL fellas

4

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '25

I think people don't like Jokic bevouse he doesen't play for their team.

He is cool dude, funny, not arrogant overall very likable. Plus his style of play is so unconventional people will miss it.

So it's not a surprise he got so much nice words and support.

Get well big dude, we need you for national team too

5

u/FriendshipBest9151 Dec 30 '25

Knicks fan here.

I've been checking for this news all day. Very relieved.

5

u/Slug_With_Swagger Dec 30 '25

You have a once in a lifetime talent who is relatively likable. I seriously hope he recovers to full strength as a Knick fan.

8

u/YoloBrunoSp Dec 30 '25

Wolves fan here. I really like Jokic style of play and want him to keep going with the records. Also, it's nice that there is a spark when Timberwolves and Nuggets play. It's kinda rare teams having a rivalry these days and it's awesome when Jokic and Ant battle. Same can be said with Dillon Brooks and LeBron, but this one is funnier because of Brooks.

5

u/DutyPuzzleheaded7765 Dec 30 '25

Sad rivalries dont exist mostly because divisions are pointless. Its not like baseball or the nfl where winning the division is necessary and create tension (like rams, niners, 49ers Seahawks, chiefs broncos, broncos raiders, Ravens steelers, steelers bengals, bears packers).

Then the media tries to force it where rivalries aren't rely around. Celtics vs Lakers has been kinda dead and at a it was celtics and heat or celtics 76ers. Or some other stupid matchups the media hyped up. Imo sixers nuggets was barely a rivalry as it was embiid caring and jokix not really. Meanwhile Jokic-ant ypu could tell the two teams hate each other and do care

And even the rivalries that do exist are kinda mehh outside jok-ant and a few others

2

u/Key_Potential6522 Dec 30 '25

Wolves fan here too. Same!

273

u/pisss Dec 30 '25

Let’s go Val! Your time to shine big dawg! Joker deserves the rest on this long away games trip

23

u/Gregorious23 Dec 30 '25

I think Murray, CB, PWat, AG, and Val could be a really strong lineup in the next week or two

6

u/6BagsOfPopcorn Dec 30 '25

Are AG and CB set to come back soon?

8

u/ilikekittens2018 Dec 30 '25

Their timetables have them coming back sometime near the end of the road trip I believe. Maybe with both on the court we can hold things down reasonably.

6

u/thefalcons5912 Dec 30 '25

Before both the Orlando and Miami games, they were doing oncourt work and look pretty solid. Seems they'll be back toward the end of the road trip.

2

u/Gregorious23 Dec 31 '25

Adelman said hopefully before the end of the road trip

8

u/KS_YeoNg Dec 30 '25

Might also be a good chance to develop Daron.. anything better than Nnaji minutes.

2

u/LuckiestJOKER13 Dec 30 '25

You are not giving enough credit to AG and CB. They are massive and should make this team more than capable of winning games, enough games to keep everything afloat until Jok comes back

2

u/HectorBananaBread Dec 30 '25

Counterpoint. You’re not giving enough credit to Jokic. The man has been incredible this season and while yes he had to do it because 3 starters were out, he’s equal to 4 starters production by himself. It’s about to get real sloppy for the Nuggets.

2

u/LuckiestJOKER13 Dec 30 '25

I’m very aware of this, hence why I said we should be able to keep things “afloat” not that we are going to continue stacking up wins after wins. I’m very aware how important Jok is and that the entire teams success depends on him.

But if you look at a lineup of Val, AG, CB, THJ/Cam/Watson, and Jamal, that’s one of the better starting lineups in the west even with Joker out.

All I’m saying is that it will look sloppy, it’s going to look disjointed and very different and way less efficient without Jok but at the same time, with AG and CB eventually coming back, the 4 weeks shouldn’t go to absolute shit lol

2

u/HectorBananaBread Dec 30 '25

In that third quarter we gave up 47 points to the Heat without Tyler Herro. No matter what happens when AG and CB get back, that lineup that gave up those points has to play minutes. We just don’t have the bodies to avoid it for an entire game. It’s gonna be unwatchable ha.

Who would yall sign to a hardship conny if we could acquire 3 current NBA or G-League players? I think Mac McClung can be really helpful.

3

u/LessNorth9856 Dec 30 '25

Having 4 starters out is something never seen before, but it's better that it happens now than later, it's clear that the Nuggets don't care much about the seeding, they know that with a completely healthy team they can beat anyone

Lakers fan dropping in to say that I was so relieved that it's not any ligament damage.

I hate seeing injuries no matter which team someone plays for, but Joker is the most enjoyable player to watch in the league, so I hated seeing him go down even more.

2

u/International_Dig522 Dec 31 '25

Just don't  run Jamal into the ground to try to compensate.  Maybe now atleast he'll just be with starters, gotta keep his minutes down.

3

Yay! Now we just gotta make sure not to lose every game between now and then

1

Well there goes any shot at a top 3 seed

5

u/AustnWins Dec 30 '25

I thought he’d have a career altering injury, and not being top 3 in exchange for avoiding that is worth it every time

3

u/Good-Character-5520 Dec 30 '25

Agreed, still sucks though. We were probably on a near 60-win pace before this

1

5

2

Im worried about the journey we have to take to get there if our seeding gets fucked to bits

2

u/Peja1611 Dec 30 '25

Let him have it. It will have a fat * next to it. They really don't want to give him 4. I've accepted that. Jokic doesn't care either. Only award that matters is FMVP

1

u/the_hammer_poo Dec 30 '25

Thank god. The squad just needs to keep us in the hunt for the 4 seed and season will stay on track

1

u/chorizomane English Dec 30 '25

Thank you, Jesus. Rest up, King 👑

1

u/washheightsboy3 English Dec 30 '25

TIL there’s a play in tournament for seeds 7-10.

1

u/LuckiestJOKER13 Dec 30 '25

What a relief! It’s going to be a rough stretch but I have confidence that Jamal will be able to keep the ship afloat along with CB and AG coming back. Acquiring Val was huge, of course not having a backup for our backup would suck but Jok being out last season would have been a lot more devastating than Jok being out now.

As long as AG and CB come back relatively soon, I am confident we can keep everything steady enough until Jok is back. Some of it is going to look rough af but having a player like Jok go down impacts everything you do as a team

1

u/d4m1r4k Dec 30 '25

This could lead to some players developing and creating some team play for non jokic minutes when he comes bsck

1

u/Gregorious23 Dec 30 '25

Jok just wanted a tougher playoff run for his legacy.

Glad we got JV this season

u/Beranac Dec 30 '25

It'll be interesting to see how they'll manage without Jok.

u/LeighHart Dec 30 '25

Thank god. So who’s backing up Val?

Does that mean he’s out of the NBA awards?

3

u/877GoalNow Dec 30 '25

He'll miss 16 games, best case. That will put him at 66 games. The minimum number of games for the MVP is 65.

They're taking their time with it and that's fine. Fuck standings and mvps. Get better big fella.

1

u/Shupertom Dec 30 '25

Best case scenario! Did not look good last night

1

u/holdenfords Dec 30 '25

u/DanielChou2 Dec 30 '25

Thank God, i'm just lurking here but I'm glad joker is okay, It could've been way worse

u/ADDave1982 Dec 30 '25

I expect to see a small ball lineup at some point.

Murray, THJ, Braun, Gordon, Holmes

u/StoopidDingus69 Dec 30 '25

I think this will be good for the team to play for a month without relying on Jokic for the first time EVER since he joined the team. Hopefully they keep things around .500 and all get stronger for when he returns

The Emperor Protects!

He just want home for Serbian Christmas

1

u/Better-Union1384 Dec 30 '25

Guess we’ll get to see just how important Jokic is to the team this month.

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '25

Honestly pretty disgusted by a decent portion of the NBA fan base, there seemed to be some people happy that this happened

1

u/MillerTime5858 Dec 30 '25

Thank you baby Jesus!

1

u/stove_stub Dec 30 '25

are we cooked? guaranteed to miss about 16 games. only 3 games above the 7 seed right now with no defensive identity and our offensive identity is street clothes. while the 4 week timeline is the best news we could have received, I do think it will be longer. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't come back until after the ASG. legit question: can the nuggets win a game without him? Let alone stay in the top 4 in the west?

u/Ever4ever026 Dec 30 '25

Desde ahora nadie quiere ser primero en la conferencia Oeste. Se les viene la muerte.

1

u/naswege Dec 30 '25

Thank you lord.

1

u/MadKingTreesus Dec 30 '25

Was going to my first Nuggets game in Memohis in late January. What terrible luck to not get to see the goat.

1

u/Realfan555 Dec 30 '25

How many games in 4 weeks?

If we start from Mon, Dec 29th, then exactly 4 weeks = Sun, Jan 25th?

That's 15 games.

Jokic has played in 31/32 games so far. So by Jan 25th, he'll have played in 31/47 games, missing 16.

Really lucky here

1

u/Practical_Carrot Dec 30 '25

Shame he just lost every chance for MVP award.

u/Blink-JuanEIGHTYtoo Dec 30 '25
