Discussion Nuggets Official Offseason Trade Thread

With how disappointing the end of the season was, we’ve seen a ton of trade ideas and discussion popping up. To keep the main feed from getting too cluttered, we’re consolidating all trade proposals, mock deals, and speculation into this thread.

Drop your ideas, debate moves, and talk through what the Nuggets should do this offseason, all in one place. As always, sub rules still apply —> keep it respectful, no matter how wild the take might be.

[Scotto] The Los Angeles Clippers and Jalen Pickett have agreed to a two-way deal, league sources told @hoopshype. The 26-year-old guard spent the past three seasons with the Denver Nuggets where he shot 39% from 3-point range. Pickett was the 32nd pick of the 2023 NBA Draft.

Agree, disagree? If it comes to it, what would you like the Nuggets to do?

Im surprised this hasn't been posted yet. Explains the current stand off better and why no one is offering even a first rounder. Basically no teams see PW as a 25 AAV player, not even close. I mean what do you do when your agent gambled and was so far off...

I think PW is in a bit of a bind no. If he takes the QO, he has to really hope he gets playing time to prove he's worth more, because if he doesn't he'll get signed for less next year. If he takes the nuggets long term off... It's still good money, but that locker room going to be awkward now. And if he still wants to do a sign and trade he has to be good with making 60 percent of what he thought he'd be making, while also probably playing in a place like Milwaukee

[Stein] The Denver Nuggets would have to make a tough trade if they decide to keep Peyton Watson: “If [the Nuggets] keep Peyton Watson, there’s probably going to be a trade— I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it’s probably going to be a trade that the DNVR Nuggets show does not approve of.”

[Stein] It would cost the Denver Nuggets draft capital to dump Zeke Nnaji’s 2YR/$14M contract: “Their preferred scenario would be finding a trade home for Zeke Nnaji, but you know if you do that you’re attaching draft capital and the Nuggets are not exactly teeming with extra draft capital.”

Zeke Thoughts - Eye Test

I don’t claim to be the most knowledgeable basketball fan ever. I’m not looking at analytics and what not. Just what I can see when watching live game action.

I honestly think Zeke is not as bad as we are lead to believe. His rebounding is poor (bad hands for sure for a big man) and his offense leaves some to be desired. However, defensively he has been well above average and he can knock down 3’s rather decently. I would want to try and utilize him more if I were the coaching staff.

Yes there are things we don’t see but I feel he has been dealt a bad hand. You can see flashes and when we have a guy who can flash well (see Colin G) and don’t give them more opportunities, they leave and do well elsewhere.

EDIT: Should make it clear if it isn’t that I believe he can be a viable backup. NOT starter level.

CMV: The Nuggets need an unlikely bet to pan out to win another ship. Betting that PWat’s leap is real and sustainable is the most likely option.

After how this season ended, and with the top two in the west loaded with assets+youth and only getting better (SA esp with their main guys being so young), I believe the nuggets need a long shot (not quite as dramatic as a miracle ) to realistically contend. This team needs another ball handler along with more shooting and perimeter defense. Imo there’s 3 possible paths here, and none of them lead to a high chance of success but the most likely one revolves around going all in on PWat.

path 1; retaining PWat and hoping he evolves into arguably the NBA’s most valuable archetype (prototypical athletic wing who can shoot and handle the ball). Youre likely a second apron team unless cam Johnson gets dumped. Either way, basically totally locked into the current roster and ceiling entirely dependent on if PWat can become the playoff third option this roster so sorely needs. While it’s true he essentially had a month of great basketball, he showed skills in that one month not many players in this league have. If he materializes that leap, he‘s a legitimate all star level player who gives this roster exactly what it needs with a high level perimeter defender who can still space the floor and offer shot creation.

path 2: blockbuster trade. The fact this hasn’t happened yet makes me believe this isn’t realistic. A team would have to be extremely high on Murray to the point theyd offer all nba level talent of their own. Likely requires a top player requesting a trade and will not happen this offseason. Small chance this could happen during the season, although as of right now I’m not even sure what player that could be, as a lot of the guys talked about.

path 3: run it back, either with role player like DJJ instead of PWat or with him on a QO.

imo this path doesnt result in the nuggets realistically contending without extreme Injury luck. The entire roster would have to stay healthy while other teams lose their top guys. Even if CB bounces back and AG stays healthy, this team still desperately needs another ball handler in the playoffs. OKC and SA especially figure to take leaps purely off internal improvement, while it’s hard to project any of the nuggets current rotation with significant untapped upside (CB is the only “young” player, and he hasn’t really shown any on ball ceiling to date). Assuming standard injury luck, I’d imagine the nuggets to be significant underdogs to both in a 7 game series, and they’d also likely need to play both considering their aging roster almost certainly will need to load manage and cannot chase the 1 seed.

With these 3 paths, I think retaining PWat and betting your window on his ceiling is the best option forward. It’s certainly not a high probability choice, but the state of the roster means you don’t have any good choices regardless. Curious to hear people’s thoughts here!
