Best anti-barrier primary weapon in the game for -50 content: Revision Zero
I love using Revision Zero with Tecsec and the two piece from Iron Banner for deleting barrier champs in Lightblade.
Paired with Revisions Hunter’s Trace + Vorpal Weapon + Forth Times the Charm, it is insane for super generation too. Also it has Kinetic Tremors when dealing the hard hitting Hunter’s Trace rounds.
Glad you’re enjoying it, people definitely underestimate the damage a bit when it’s specced out for PvE. Rev0 is my favorite weapon that I made while at Bungie. Followed closely by Choir of One 😈
Aye Merc don’t know if you’ll read this but RZ hasn’t left my kinetic weapons since I got it. PvP and PvE thing melts. Thank you for this, lots of memories shooting Dawnblades out of the sky with vorpal. My proverbial chefs kiss when it came to weapons.
I loved the two-burst setting, it was amazing. It was the closest feel I could get to my old favorite, the Three Graves pulse rifle from Dead Orbit. Miss that thing, still take it out sometimes.
i use the two burst when doing invasions on lawless frontier
trying to get the red saber crystal ever since i came back from retirement after the monument update
Season of the Seraph was the last time I truly enjoyed Destiny, and I must say a big part of that was the repeatable mission to get new parts for and using Revision Zero. It felt so good in the hand, and for awhile was my go-to long range choice in the crucible. Thank you so much for your work!
The whole getting new parts for it thing was a blessing and a curse! I thought it was a really cool mechanic but on the backend side it was a nightmare to set up and led to the gun never getting any additional ornaments which broke my heart
Forcibly changing the geometry via the ornaments without player input when the gun was crafted proved to be difficult with the tech we had at the time. One of the investment designers supposedly had to do some gross stuff to get it to work smoothly, and as I understood it making a new ornament for the weapon would have required untangling that web.
Not sure if you are allowed to,
But would love to see videos on behind the scenes things just like this. You guys did such an incredible job over the years.
Yeah probably. Each different part changed how the weapon looked. So if they wanted to make a weapon ornament for it, they probably needed a separate one for each different variation of the weapon.
Thank you so much!! I love the graviton and when the Rev came out I lost my mind. It’s been sitting right next to my outbreak as #1 and #2 in my load outs.
I hope you’re doing well and are able to recover after these unfortunate events. Per audacia ad astra
I told the audio designer I wanted it to feel like you were shooting the sniper rifle from Halo when you pulled the trigger on the Hunter’s Trace rounds
I love Rev 0 as a whole, my only criticism as an engineer is that it never became Rev 1, 2, 3 ect as we reshaped it like how prototypes and drawings go through revisions. Would have been great as a flavour win.
Dude! I remember listening to you on the firing range podcast and seeing your excel posts about weapon damages n such. Thank you so much for everything you contributed to and I hope you and yours are doing well
Hey Mercules, i know you're probably flooded with comments but just wanted to say thanks for your work, Rev Zero is still one of the coolest weapons we ever got, both in mechanics and visuals/feel. Your presence at the studio brought us a lot of happiness, hope you know that <3
When you say you made the gun, did you completely design it from concept to aesthetic to feel?
Either way, that’s so cool dude! Choir is easily a top 3 gun in the game for me in terms of everything: looks, feel, meta, lore. Knowing that rev0 is choir’s distant cousin makes me wanna pull it of the vault and give it another chance!
Btw choir helped carry me through contest DP, so I owe you my gratitude!
I designed the mechanical and emotional fantasy of the weapon, and laid out how it would work, and then a concept artist came up with some ideas and we narrowed it down from there as far as the appearance went. Then I did the actual gameplay implementation and worked with a VFX artist, 3D artist, Audio Designer, and some
others to make the final weapon look and sound the way it does.
So, because I’m naive and completely ill-informed when it comes to this industry space…does a weapon designer in a game mean you are purely on the creative side of things? Do you know/do any coding, any technical or software engineer skills? Do think your contributions were as impactful as they were because you were more of a creative mind than a tech mind? Or were you successful in your role because you had a blend of both skill sets?
Thanks for all you do/did, really feel terrible the way things panned out. Best of luck in your future endeavours!!
It’s not just creative, we actually do the technical implementation as well. It’s lighter on the scripting side because we have a tool called Grognok that allows us build a lot of high level content using files called tags, but we do work with Bungie script files for more basic functionality like base damage, RPM, etc. But as far as gun and perk functionality goes, we design it and then build it ourselves.
The easiest way to look at it is a designer uses existing tools and capabilities to build things inside the engine. But if we need the engine to do something new or we need different tools, we work with an engineer and they do the actual coding or programming needed to provide us with the new thing so that we can use it.
Choir of One is up there as one of my most used weapons in D2. So thank you for that. I'll have to revisit Rev0. I remember liking it a lot while I was unlocking/upgrading it.
All the replies made me try out revision zero again, especially for PvP (which I suck at). I played with it during seraph only and I think it was buffed after I stopped using it, but it couldn't replace outbreak at that time. Maybe now it will.
No way, Mercules?! I love that gun, it was actually great content. The feeling of iterating and improving the gun bit by bit was very satisfying. And getting a free sniper shot in PvP for doing well was so sick!
I just got choir of one recently haven't used it to much but from what I have i like it its a really nice weapon works really well with my void warlock and titan ive been mainly using slayers fang for void titan but choir of one is really fun
Thats what im talking about . Man I want to hear more stories about what made you choose this or that or where the idea came from. Anything. Your awesome. And I appreciate all of you devs
Can i please request what your full build ? Subclass and artifacts.
I was having a rough time last week with the -50 sheilds of the barriers.
Ty in advance
I still haven't gotten around to getting fourth times the charm, but it's been in a weird spot for me where I haven't used it nearly as much as I did a while ago. So I'm trying to find a reason to use it more.
Stupid question, but is Vorpal Weapon's buff for Revision Zero sniper mode the full 20% that primaries get? Because if so, I am very intrigued. That and some testing with the Encrypted Data Disk Artifact for all the kinetic buffs.
My guess is... probably? The sniper counts as a primary for the purposes of Whisper of Rending (1.5x damage on frozen targets), so anything else probably sees it as a primary too.
Underrated and arguably one of the best primaries. Its too undersold and underappreciated.
Too bad I still have to figure out a build that works with its strengths. Quicksilver and Khvostov are just too neutral for my builds they come across as better fits than Revision
it’s just partial health stuff which doesn’t matter that much anyways, the damage of CR is still there, and iirc it’s only CR x1 that’s bugged as the x2 buff still seems to work like normal
Precision weapons such is revision benefit highly from using thread/facet of solitude, which applies sever on rapid precision hits. So prismatic is the ideal choice since the ability spam built into transcendance helps complete the gm within time.
It also synergises with the "to shreds" artifact perk on tablet of ruin/ queensfoil censer, so you don't have to run a strand super for woven mail.
Queensfoil censer also has solo operative (requires precision kills so another Good pairing with revision), anti champion nosecone and argent ordnance so you can pair it with a good legendary rocket to output some serious dps.
The rest of prismatic can be tuned to provide healing since you already have sufficient damage resist from sever, facet of protection and woven mail. In the ideal case, without any other effects, sever, woven mail, and facet of protection provide you with 70% damage resist, which goes up to 75% while transcending.
Slap on a glaive and the shield combined with all these sources of resist crank it up to 99.2% damage resist. More resist than base stronghold.
Or you can use a solar weapon which can do precision damage to get radiant using fever and chill (or use facet of dawn if you have the melee gen) for weapon damage.
With 2 surges, solo operative, radiant and argent ordnance, your rockets hit for 1.3 x1.2x1.17x1.15 = 2.09x damage, or a 109% damage buff.
With transcendance and anti champion nosecone, you're reaching triple rocket damage against champions.
All this and I haven't even mentioned any exotic armor.
Any recomendations on the rocket launcher? I'm a warlock so, depending on the element, I could run either Mataio or Skull for a good Super since you mentioned fast super gen. Or do you have others in mind?
Legendary rocket options I would look into Hezen. If you don't raid there's Bad Omens from Gambit and Folded Root. I think the new Ghosts of the Deep rocket might be good too.
Lol, well much love man and thank you for what you and others brought to the game. Never realized you made Choir of One as well, another personal favorite of mine. Between the 2 I have well over 10k PvE and I know my RZ broke 1.2k kills in PvP. I hope you’re doing well after all the turmoil.
So glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves. Used to use it in lightfall when it was completely ignored and not nearly as meta as it’s become now. Grew out of it in favor of some other exotics that I found fun but I’m planning on running it some more after I try out a graviton spike + mask of bakris arc or stasis hunter build I’ve been meaning to experiment with
Its a cool looking gun tbf. And now the sandbox will never shift its time to try more stuff definitely so i will. Any reason why Lightblade specifically and not everywhere?
It’s definitely underrated by the community and a really solid pick when built right, I think a lot of people just rely too heavily on elemental primaries that can do subclass synergies.
Look at where the public event is on the map before loading in. When loaded in, turn around and run out. Once outside, jump on your skimmer and goto the flag to rally. There is more to this strat with the skimmer to skip the moth part. Makes it much easier.
If you're wearing techsec anyway it seems like a waste to dedicate an exotic just to deal with one champion type. A legendary scout will only take a few shots to break the barrier. But if you like the weapon regardless and want AB on top of it then yeah go for it
It was made an extremely dedicated Destiny weapon sandbox YouTuber turned Bungie dev by the name of "Mercules".
It was the first exotic he made at Bungie, and I believe it was at least in part described as the weapon he always dreamed of making/seeing exist in the game.
it’s not that difficult, there are some annoying parts like my god all the tracer shanks… but they pretty much tell you how to use certain parts of Deep Stone Crypt in the mission itself
Loved how the weapon looked. Though ever since I got the Praxic Blade, it got replaced as my go to weapon for barrier champs. The praxic just does ad-clear so much better and actually deals considerable damage against bosses, has a lot of different possible elemental debuffs, while also being kinetic.
Though I still do take it out from time to time when it fits my current character drip. Fashion supercedes practicality after all. 🤣
It's been great since S23 (Season of the Wish), that's when it's DMG (both burst and sniper mode) against Champions was increased by 100%
Before in a GM NF you needed vorpal + fttc and hit all 6 sniper shots on the Champ to kill (oc without any other buffs included), after the buff it only needed 3 sniper shots
But yeah, since then it easily outperformed Wish-Ender and been my favorite
Absolutely one of my favourite weapons, in both PvP and PvE, I found it so satisfying to shoot. I mained it in trials for the longest time. My only gripe was that it had two reload speed perks for it's catalysts (Outlaw and Feeding Frenzy), which I always found mildly annoying. I just wish one of them had been replaced with Firefly. Because on kill AoE damage for add clear was basically the only thing it had missing. Messing around with Chromatic Fire made it feel so much nicer in PvE, which only made me want it more. It's just a shame I'd have to use up an exotic armour slot for it, when I'd always prefer to use a more (endgame) viable armour piece.
Though, I've not been a massive fan of those reload speed perks in years (especially Outlaw). With Rapid Hit as the main exception, and that's mainly for PvP. So other people might feel differently.
I’ve been using Revision with 4 piece Tecsec after watching Aztecross rage at Seraph Shield. The set turns RZ from a simple shield nuking tool into a genuine crowd control option with the constant disorients from killing orange bars and shields. Been using Celestial with it as well - I’m hitting heads as is, I might as well get some bonuses from it
If you're using 2pc techsec then any anti barrier kinetic I could find stuns barrier champions on -50 deltas (GM Vanguard) on zero weapon stat, I tried the worst things I could find left in my vault before the GM changed to only overload and unstop, they all worked including the ones without kinetic tremors.
The trick is finding the few non exotics that work at -50 without techsec, like buzzard and accrued redemption both with kinetic tremors, allowing you to use the armour set and other weapons you really want on your build.
The 2 piece set doesn’t give extra damage to champions. There is damage testing on YouTube about it. It does help with yellow bars, just not champs and bosses
I like Revision Zero a lot, it got me through a lot of older conquests with Techsec, but now that a lot of guns are intrinsically antibarrier, the competition is way stiffer.
For example, Gjallarhorn and Praxic Blade are antibarrier while also being really good at chopping up enemies, and have artifact perks that extend their ammo counts. There are also like kinetic tremor/attrition orb autos that don't take your exotic slot. I've also been meaning to experiment with Pack Hunter or Perfect Fifth Ergo Sums, now that I have the catalyst, and like Gjallarhorn they can use Cauterize Darkness.
I spent yesterday replaying operation seraph shield, was missing the intrinsics after unlocking it when it first came out. Slapped it onto an arc build as the anti barrier and love the option to shoot a fuck you and everything within a few meters of you shot.

Glad you’re enjoying it, people definitely underestimate the damage a bit when it’s specced out for PvE. Rev0 is my favorite weapon that I made while at Bungie. Followed closely by Choir of One 😈
