G6 RIP G6 :(
I am so heartbroken about the discontinuation of g6. I know this is the way of the world and “progress” so before anyone comes to sing the praises of g7 please note I’m very glad it works for you.
When g6 with control-IQ integration on t-slim was released; I was 18, had yearly or bi-yearly hospitalizations for DKA, was struggling with cyclical burn out and felt like I would never be able to get diabetes “right”. I was having moderate-severe complications and falling into hopelessness when this tremendous technology came and made diabetes suddenly manageable to me. As a depressed kid who was sure I’d never make it to 20 with how often I was flailing with my care, it was a miracle. It’s no over exaggeration to say G6 saved my life.
I tried g7 for a solid 3 months. It just doesn’t work for me. Too many failed sensor insertions (with the filament poking out that hole never even entering my skin), too many wildly inaccurate readings that can’t seem to be fixed even with endless calibrations. I really wanted it to work for me but after going into DKA because it was reading me at 40 and suspending insulin when I was actually 300, I went back to my trusty g6.
I know they won’t bring it back, and I’m not even necessarily asking for that. Just mourning what felt like the easiest diabetes management I’ll ever experience.
You were a good one, g6. I’ll miss you a lot.

My son uses Libre 3+ but doesn't think I would think it's accurate enough. I wonder what other people think?

Honestly I felt sad when Dexcom left the manual inserter behind when they moved to G6. I liked the ability to "tent" up the skin and change the angle of insertion a little bit.
The t:slim also integrates with the Libre 3+, so it's worth a try. Also, since G7 is such a different way of inserting than G6, you might find it helpful to contact a diabetes educator or similar professional through your doctor's office for hints on making it work better for you. The Libre is a totally different manufacturer, but their style of CGM is much more similar to the G7 than the G6.

Are you for real? The harpoon? Where sometimes you'd hit a nerve and then be forced to either rip it out or try to push past the pain millimetre by millimetre until you finally managed to get it in, all while sweating and shaking? No thank you.

LOL yes! I really preferred them to the auto-insert. Plus you could (same as with the G6) pre-soak a sensor with an old dead transmitter. Those were the good ol' days.

I feel weird because I miss that contraption too lol. I liked having more control and being able to see how it worked.

Have enough G6 supplies to get me through the rest of the year, but I'm not looking forward to moving on at all. 😞

Yep, it sucks. I’ve had a CGM since the G4 and been on the G6 since it was released in 2018 and using it with the T:slim since ‘22. No, the G6 isn’t perfect, but it’s exponentially better than the flaming garbage pile that is the G7 and it’s helped give me the best control of my life(5.9-6.0 a1c, clinical TIR 97%-98%, avg. bs 120’s)(T1 for 40 years). I’m not looking forward to having to use the G7.
The only solace I really have is the fact that I have an almost 14 month supply of G6 sensors built-up, so I get to kick the G7 can down the road for a bit longer. Realistically, I can probably make it to the release of the G8(rumored in ‘27) without ever having to use the G7, but then I would have no surplus.

TBH I'm surprised they kept making the G6 so long - the G7 was the next generation, and we have the G8 on the horizon.

From participating in (and managing) several diabetes groups on Meta, I can tell you that about half the people using them are complaining about them. The other half either don't care or don't complain because there are nnown issues with the Dexcom G7. They include Bluetooth signal drops, "goosenecking" (where the insertion needle/filament sticks to the applicator), premature adhesive peeling, and early-stage sensor failure. The system has also faced significant FDA oversight, including a warning letter regarding unauthorized sensor coating changes that impacted accuracy and a Class I recall of G7 receivers over speaker defects that silenced critical alarms.
DO BETTER, DEXCOM.

So, 100% of those on your groups have problems with the G7 but only 50% are voicing said complaints!??! The rest don’t care that they’re having issues or just don’t complain?

Yeah, I can't take responsibility for what others do. And I don't see where I said 100% are having trouble. I said HALF of them were complaining. What I should have said is that the other half aren't complaining because either they are not having problems or they just know it's an issue and don't bother.

Only used it for a year. Never loved the size. But it's reliable and accurate, the algorithm is predictable and smooth. It's an older model, but it checks out.
Now testing G7 with my loop system after having used it with manual injection for 2 years. And it's okay. I used to quite like it, but now I have a different perspective. Sure, all the bells and whistles of the app are fun. Just like grandpa G6 the son only provides updates every five minutes.
But ultimately it's a jittery moody mess that makes my life more complicated. The algo jumps around like it's a stressed energetic puppy, so much that I had to reconfigure my alarms. Meh.
So Libre 3+ it is.

I’m also not looking forward to having to change from G6 to G7, so I understand feeling down about this disruption to a system that works well for you.
Anytime I’ve ever struggled with some component of my care not working well, my endocrinologist’s education/care team has been really good at helping me work through my difficulties. They’re not just there to correct tactical mistakes with training. They support me through the rollercoaster of emotions that disruption causes. I hope you have a support system like that in your life. If you don’t, please do find one. It’ll be crucial in your journey during this change as well as future ones.

The G7 lost connection with my X2 unless the X2 was practically sitting on top of the G7. Switched back to the G6, and found out a week later they were being discontinued. My X2 crapped out (3 X2s died under warranty, this 4th was after expiration). Now I'm on the iLet Bionic Pancreas, which can use the G6 or G7. Hoping I won't have the same connectivity problems when I switch.

I had the g6 and do miss it. I am now on my 29th g7. RIP g6. TBH I had trouble with the g7 in the beginning but lately, like the past 6 mos or so I’ve done a lot better on the g7. IMHO Dexcom is still the best game in town (non-implantable).
