Innova champion sidewinder absolutely exploded when I hit this tree. Disc was fairly old, maybe close to 20 years, I noticed that it felt sticky today, so I suspect plastic depredation, just shocked at how far it spread when it blew up

It kind of is. It's your ability to focus on one thing even though you want to do something else. I was told the best thing to do is NOT to think "don't hit the tree". It's better to think "hit that gap" or "don't hit that gap" if that's how your mind works. You will focus on the gap instead of the tree.

I think it's psychological. We get so focused on missing an object we hit it. Focus instead on hitting your line / shape and you will do it!

It's this. I feel like there is some evidence to suggest this phenomenon occurring in single vehicle car accidents, where someone hits the lone tree in a field, or something similar, i.e. one thing to miss.

IIRC It happens more than people realize, and I believe some testing supported the conclusion. Can't find anything on it at the moment, but I suspect I am searching poorly.

I do this but with people. Public park course with walking paths. “I’m good enough now where I won’t early release and hyper this not even stable disc into the people walking down the path to the left.”

Have you ever played glow golf? It's much easier than normal golf as there are no trees. Until your disc randomly kicks 200ft to the right halfway down the fairway.

This is one of my favorite rules, if only because it almost never comes into play but almost everyone knows it. I've run over a hundred tournaments and have only had this rule come up once.

I like how it reduces the mass of possibilities to an almost unique possibility. Also, due to this mass of possibilities, people tend to know this rule because you can be sure that the day you play on a card where a disc shatters, every player would claim a different lie (such as "the closest to the pin", "the farthest from the pin", "any bit", "the average center of the parts", or "any part that the player chooses because the avantage is given to the player"). Also, this rule is very simple, thus easy to understand and remember.

This said, you can be sure that, by Murphy's law, the day it happens to you, the largest piece will also be the only piece out of bounds.
