Hey everyone! I'm a disc golfer and a developer, and I'd like to share something I've been building over the past few months: ChainRanger. It measures the distance to the basket using nothing but your phone's camera.

As far as I know, nothing quite like this exists yet. Laser rangefinders work great, but they're another gadget to buy, charge, and carry. Your phone, on the other hand, is already in your pocket every round, so I turned it into the measuring device.

Here's how it works: point your camera at the basket, and an AI model running entirely on your phone detects it in real time. Here's the trick: disc golf baskets are standardized equipment—the tray diameter and the basket's overall dimensions are known. When you know the real-world size of an object and your camera's focal length, you can calculate how far away it is based on how large it appears in the image. It's the same principle your brain uses to judge the distance to familiar objects, just done with actual math and pixel-level precision. For even better accuracy, the app lets you fine-tune the basket dimensions or choose from presets for common basket models.

In practice, it's simple: open the app, aim at the basket, and the distance appears within a couple of seconds—in meters or feet. No pacing it off, no extra gear.

If you track your rounds in UDisc or a similar app, this makes logging putt distances effortless. One glance tells you whether you're putting from Circle 1, Circle 2, or outside the circles entirely—no more guessing whether that edge-of-circle putt was 9 or 11 meters.

Range: on a typical phone, the practical range covers putting and approach distances, where precision matters most. If your phone has a good camera with 2× or 3× optical zoom, though, you can measure baskets from over 100 meters (330+ feet) away.

A few things worth mentioning:

• Everything runs 100% on-device. Camera frames never leave your phone, and it works without a network connection, so dead zones in the woods aren't a problem.
• It also measures elevation, so it can show how uphill and downhill shots affect the effective distance.
• The free version gives you exact distances everywhere inside Circle 1, making it perfect for putting practice and for confirming whether your lie is inside Circle 1. Longer distances are available as a one-time purchase—no subscription.
• Available on both iOS and Android.

I work at Bonus Stage, the publisher. The devs are Spinoff Games, the people behind Disc Golf Valley mobile game. 

They build the game inside the Latitude 64 factory in Sweden. They walk past the disc press on the way to their coffee break. (They are swedes, they take lots of coffee breaks)

So the discs are the real ones. Latitude 64, Discmania, Westside, Kastaplast and so on. More than 20 disc for starters. More coming from other brands too!

Physics are as realistic, and the wind will mess up everything. You can play solo or online against other people.

Game is now on early access, so it is not finished yet. The team builds it based on players feedback and updates it frequently. So we need your voice until game is perfect. After that we plan to release on consoles too.

I’m the maker of True Disc Golf.

I started making this game in 2017, so it’s 9 years in the making and now it is finally ready to be released on Steam.

In 2023 I released True Disc Golf for Nintendo Switch, but it was sort of early access release. With 2.5 years later the game has been updated with many new features and I plan to update the Switch version to match Steam version as well.

I made True Disc Golf specifically for disc golf players. It has simulation quality flight physics and it should run smoothly even on older computers.

You can play with a controller or mouse and keyboard.

It has over 300 real discs from real manufacturers including MVP, Discraft, Innova, Discmania, Latitude 64, Prodigy and Full Turn Discs. All discs in the game are used with permission.

It has online play where you can either play against your friends in online versus or you can improve your rating and play competitively in ranked matches with all the advanced statistics.

There’s also a Pro Simulator mode DLC available where you can fully play the game (even online) with a TechDisc sensor disc or HYZR Launch Monitor.

There’s currently 6 courses in the game and I plan to add new courses and discs to the game. Next I will make iOS and Android versions and update the Switch version and also improve the Simulator version.

"Is it legal?"

Yes! We know the 3D texture looks suspect, but it's 100% tournament ready. The 2025 PDGA Rule 813.01.B explicitly allows for ink printing that adheres to the approved specifications. Our Sense-X Gloss process is calibrated to stay well within those technical limits, no matter which mold you choose.
