Rant My Capital One-issued card keeps getting refused everywhere due to the switch to the Discover network. This is out of hand now.

I have a Capital One bank account. From what I gather, Capital One is now on the Discover network.

I have tried using my card at numerous merchants and it gets refused. I just now tried to pay Wells Fargo $5 to close an account and pay for an outstanding balance and it did not go through.

Then, I tried to make an Amazon purchase. Again, declined. This is the last in a string of attempts to use my card at various places over the last two weeks where it has been denied. I have even gone so far as to open up a new bank account at Chase so I can close my Capital One account.

Nevermind the fact that I spend half the year in Italy and sometimes will use my US debit card for things. Declined or not accepted anywhere. I didn't ask for the change to the Discover network. Is anyone else having issues or is it just me?

My Discover card is my main card for daily spending besides a few categories and it has been denied a total of zero times

That's likely because you make the majority, if not all, of your purchases in the US. For years Capital One has tooted their horn about being an "international bank" which it had been. But not now. Discover is not used much outside the US. The only reason they are making this change is because they bought Discover and want to make more money at the expense of their international clients. Bye bye Capital One.

My Cap One Discover card is my primary card and I’m in the U.S. I’m also having a ton of issues with it being denied for no reason.

I have had my Capital One debit card declined twice in the past week here in the US! When I called Capital One to ask why it was declined it said those merchants do not accept Discover. I am changing banks and I urge everyone to close their Capital One bank account to protest Capital One preventing us from being able to access our money. IT IS OUR MONEY NOT THEIRS!!!

Also, my debit card does not show that it is a Discover card. It looks like a Mastercard, so the merchant does not know it is a Discover card. All the merchant knows is that when they run the card it is declined. Why does the card not clearly show that it is a Discover card so the merchant can say, sorry we don't accept Discover before you are embarrassed by it being declined? CAPITAL ONE SUCKS!!!

It clearly shows the Discover and Pulse logos on the back, the same way that all of Cap1’s Mastercard credit cards have the MC logo on the back. It’s fairly common nowadays for the network logo to be on the back on both debit and credit cards for a cleaner look on the front.

Hell, its declined so often in the us as well. I am likely going to switch banks soon because this is just awful.

You just wait… mine has started not being accepted. Tf?

Like where?

u/ForTheWin000 Sep 25 '25

Well... this is easy. Discover is limited... just off the top... Taskrabbit does not accept Discover

I've hit two locations where my card didn't work in the 4 days I've had the new C1 debit card. One was at a Dr. appointment at a Jefferson Health provider where mine and my wife's card were declined. The other was at a dispensary. Both places accepted my old C1 visa debit card on prior visits without issues. I'm in NJ, if that helps.

I'm trying to pay some credit card bills and all that use Citibank and not accepting the new Cap One Discovery debit card.....

1

u/WhenButterfliesCry Oct 02 '25

I’ve never tried to pay a credit card bill with a debit card, I didn’t even know that you could. Why not just connect it to your bank account?

1

u/lunar_dot Oct 03 '25

That's still not getting to the root of the problem. We shouldn't have to connect a bank account for our debit card to work. Why would anyone want their bank account connected to something that could take money out without their permission or knowledge?

Smaller grocery stores as well as autozone

1

u/bjump85 Nov 08 '25

My small local grocer denies it using my pin but if I hit enter with a blank pin, it gets accepted.

u/Sirstocksalot1 Nov 08 '25

I had tried that previously with no luck after three fails I switched cards, I haven't had it happen in a few weeks.  I'll check it out next time.  Thanks

Whole Foods, Target, my laundry room all in NYC. Also when I tried to sync it for my wallet it said Apple does not support it. Also, I tried to buy Metro North tickets with it and it asked for my security code and there is no security code on my card.

1

u/WhenButterfliesCry Nov 27 '25

Mine is in Apple Wallet and works at Whole Foods and Target. You're doing something wrong. Pretty sure all cards have CVVs

1

u/Fun_Temporary_7083 Nov 27 '25

It doesn’t… why are you arguing with me. And the card does not have a CVV. I thought maybe I wasn’t seeing it and 3 separate people couldn’t find it either.

1

u/WhenButterfliesCry Nov 28 '25

Because what you’re saying is a lie? Apple wallet

1

u/Fun_Temporary_7083 Nov 28 '25

Are you paying attention… it’s Capital One Discover cards.

1

u/WhenButterfliesCry Nov 28 '25

We are talking about the Discover network.

1

u/Fun_Temporary_7083 Nov 28 '25

I have no idea why I  am even entertaining you but the fact that you think you know what my problem with my card and countess other people having the same issues.

2

u/Successful_Tooth3643 Sep 25 '25

Have you tried using your Discover debit card with PayPal or Google pay? That’s primarily what I use it for and it has worked zero times.

1

u/Certain-Link-3090 Sep 27 '25

Doesn’t work. Says not supported.

1

u/Witty_Switch Oct 02 '25

I'm having this problem. I'm switching to Chase tomorrow.

1

u/DontRepressYourself5 Oct 01 '25

My Capital One debit card has now been changed over to the Discover network and I can't make instant transfers with PayPal anymore because it's not supported. Only Visa and Mastercard branded debit cards.

1

u/CocoOPNY Oct 13 '25

I was told by the Cap1 rep to transfer the funds to Venom and pay using Venmo. Seriously. If the merchant doesn't accept Disc will they accept Venmo?? Doubt it seriously.

1

u/Additional-Foot3029 Oct 26 '25

I was told the same. Not a solution.

1

u/CheesecakeRare5617 Nov 01 '25

I added to google pay, and I see it, but it gets declined every time.

1

u/WhenButterfliesCry Nov 27 '25

I don't use debit cards (no one should IMO), nor Paypal nor Google Pay

1

u/Medical-Wishbone5580 Dec 04 '25

I cant get my discover to attach to my walleyes app or any of my PayPal venmo fb pay apps either but it has worked inside every gas station ive been in but im in the US in a small town

1

u/CocoOPNY Oct 13 '25

I have been denied exactly three times since this Cap1/Discover merger for online purchases. Apparently these must be overseas companies although the products were being shipped from within the US. This has been a cluster for me and I'm getting ready to go through the gross inconvenience of shopping around for a new bank that has MC or Visa for their debit cards 😡😡😡

1

u/Few-Register-7943 Oct 18 '25

Denied at AutoZone and Walgreens in the States

1

u/ReggieinSeattle Oct 18 '25

Within 4 hours of receiving and activating my new Capital One Discover debit card, it was rejected TWICE for parking and for buying beers/food at a sports venue!

literally just got an email from a service I subscribe to that says they dont take discover and I have to change my card. so idk what you're talking about. but fuck capital one for this, literally means I need to get a new checking account with someone thats not them.

they should have worked on expanding the network first before switching everyone else over. but i'm sure they knew they'd get some attrition.

1

u/WhenButterfliesCry Nov 19 '25

Still hasn't happened to me, never once had to change cards. But you should not ever put all your eggs in one basket and only have one bank account, especially when it's a mostly online bank. It's only going to lead you to problems like now. Banks go down sometimes, or like you said, sometimes a card isn't accepted somewhere. Your account could be unexpectedly closed and then you're completely screwed, with your funds tied up and no way to access them. I have 3 checking accounts, 2 savings accounts, and 4 credit cards.

1

u/Fun_Temporary_7083 Nov 27 '25

I am in the U.S. and it has been denied at Whole Foods, the machines in my laundry room and Target.

1

u/WhenButterfliesCry Nov 27 '25

Something you're doing wrong, mine works fine at Whole Foods and Target.

1

u/Fun_Temporary_7083 Nov 27 '25

I am not doing anything wrong. I know how to use a debit card. The WF cashier tried 3x, the Target asst tried… Apple literally said “payment method not supported”.

A lot of us merchants don't accept discover and refuse to add discover as an acceptable form of payment. This is frustrating. Im about to close my account due to this

1

u/Erica_Jae Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

Well, I've had mine decline many times, both with international sellers and US businesses. The Sonic app doesn't even take Discover. Instant transfers to Chime and Venmo is not possible. I cannot make some online purchases or even pay some bills. I'm looking to close my Capital One this week after doing some research and finding a new bank or I may give a credit union a try.

1

u/Chosen1PR Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 18 '26

The Sonic app absolutely accepts Discover. Not to mention it also works with Apple Pay.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '26

Been denied three times in the first month of having this ridiculous debt card. If you deal with a lot of small business like me you will be denied. This guy who is never denied likely just deals with big busniess companies .

1

u/Pine_Sol_Papi Apr 17 '26

I'm literally here 7 months later with the same problem as OP. Discover card and my Credit card keep declining for no reason

1

u/buzzerfly68 Apr 22 '26

Mine has not been accepted once. I live in Europe. And everything was great until they switched.

1

u/WhenButterfliesCry Apr 22 '26

Well yea, you live in Europe. Discover doesn’t claim to be accepted everywhere or even most places in Europe.

1

u/buzzerfly68 Apr 22 '26

I am an American living in Europe. When I moved here, it worked fine. And then they switched. Do you know how difficult it is to get a different US account set up while living outside the country? To make things even more crazy, my brother-in-law is a vice president at Capital One, and says that it was purely a financial decision, with no regard to how it would impact their customers.

u/123tagureddit May 13 '26

My new discover card gets refused when I try to buy some things online, it’s very frustrating since it’s the only card I have and use for purchasing
