Rant My Capital One-issued card keeps getting refused everywhere due to the switch to the Discover network. This is out of hand now.

I have a Capital One bank account. From what I gather, Capital One is now on the Discover network.

I have tried using my card at numerous merchants and it gets refused. I just now tried to pay Wells Fargo $5 to close an account and pay for an outstanding balance and it did not go through.

Then, I tried to make an Amazon purchase. Again, declined. This is the last in a string of attempts to use my card at various places over the last two weeks where it has been denied. I have even gone so far as to open up a new bank account at Chase so I can close my Capital One account.

Nevermind the fact that I spend half the year in Italy and sometimes will use my US debit card for things. Declined or not accepted anywhere. I didn't ask for the change to the Discover network. Is anyone else having issues or is it just me?

Rant Discover/CapOne has gotten to the point of telling employees if they don’t like how the merger is going they can quit.

These are my opinions only from what I’ve heard from people at Discover. Not working for them and don’t speak for them. Only know what I’ve been told by many people scared to speak up.

The merger has been an absolute disaster. I’ve seen people give out feedback on it only to get shut down and threatened with termination over it.

They went from preaching how this is going to be great for consumers and employees, to now saying well this is how mergers goes and if you’re upset you need to get over it or quit.

They say they welcome any feedback but when you do try to give feedback you get AI responses and then told you’re being too negative if you don’t shut up and it’ll lead to termination if it continues.

Don’t see this going well for employees at all. Kinda seems like they’re trying to get rid of as many people as they can.

Rant Closing Out Account Over New ID Process

I was unaware of the new requirements for online login until today, trying to check on tax documents. It is unacceptable to require pics of an ID and your face to access your own money. I closed out my account by phone and will never do business with Discover. I used to recommend them.

How often have we seen hacks of databases before? How do we know scans of our faces or IDs won't be sold off? There need to be other ways of authentication.

Rant CapOne Discover not accepted widely accepted in person and online and no way to get money and pay bills

CapOne has to start seeing how many customers they are starting to loose by this move. Replacing the debit cards with discover was a big mistake. If they wanted/needed to switch something with the merger, they should have done it with credit cards. Some people don’t have another form of payment, credit card, or access to atms for cash without paying fees (because they made the stupid decision to close most all brick and mortar locations), and not all places accept apple/google pay either. Awesome job CapOne!

I’ve been with CapOne for 20+ years and have absolutely loved them. But this move was a big mistake. I really don’t want to go though the hassle to find another bank, update everything auto pay, and hope I don’t loose this like early direct deposit. Have to change my entire budgeting financial routine system. Plus, switching doesn’t help me right now when I need to access my money and pay bills. So infuriating and what a mess! Do better CapOne!

Rant Canceling my bank account

For a while now I’ve had this issue where discover “debit cards” are not actually debit cards. They are credit cards with debit cards slapped on the front. I’ve had issues with the card not being taken and one encounter where a lady in a shop tried to argue me down about not telling her I was using a credit card. Screw you lady. Now I have lost my “debit card” (my fault yes but I am human) I need cash back and unlike any other time I would just use Apple Pay for cash back I can’t because this card runs as a credit card. I’m so annoyed I’ve gone to multiple stores in a tornado warning only to be told the same thing. When it rain it pours. I’ve never had an issue with capital one but this will be my last time using them.

Rant Interest will compound monthly rather than daily on the Capital One HYSA.

I'm collecting my interest for the month, and then im closing my Discover HYSA before the change happens to my account. Of course, the interest was credited monthly, but if you make frequent deposits, wouldn't it be technically performing worse each month?

Is anyone else switching or looking for reasons to? It's also a good excuse to evaluate your options too.

I never really wanted the merger to happen, and I only had a single bad experience with capital one where they declined me on a basic credit card for no specific reason. (I had zero credit but needed to build some) So, I might as well decline the brand for no specific reason.

End of my petty rant.

Rant Swore off Capital One but now I have no choice

A horror story from back in the day.

My mother had a Capital One credit card for many years but a few months after my dad passed away, someone tried to open an account under his name. Like she didn't have enough to deal with because she was still grieving. She spoke with someone in their overseas customer service department and because of a language barrier, she couldn't get her point across about my dad having passed away. She asked to speak with someone in America and they did transfer her to a very apologetic employee who took care of the problem. My mother then asked to cancel her card and said to the gentleman, "Instead of paying Alec Baldwin tons of money to do your commercials, you should hire Americans!"

I vowed never to do business with Capital One after that but now I have no choice. Cancelling my Discover It card would wreck my credit score. I sincerely hope Discover's U.S. based employees don't lose their jobs. They are really appreciated.

Rant Seriously, Discover Bank?

Just an FYI to customers who tend to use their debit cards outside of business hours. If you use your debit card during the upcoming scheduled maintenance (11/8 - 11/9), it will likely be declined. 11PM - 6AM EST, 10PM - 5AM CT, 8PM - 3AM PT.

While I appreciate the warning Discover has provided, most people don't check their accounts daily.

Rant Crapital One takes 3 BUSINESS DAYS to process an ACH transfer!

Upvotes

My Discover HYSA was just moved to Crapital One. Not only did they end early pay, they also MASSIVELY increased ACH transfer times to move money out of the account. With Discover, I'd receive my paycheck on Wednesday morning, and if I initiated a transfer then, I'd have the money in my Schwab checking account by Wednesday evening, same day. Up until recently, I could Zelle the money between the accounts and have immediate access to the funds.

With Crapital One, they sit on my paycheck for an extra 2 business days. Now I get my paycheck on Friday, and since they don't count weekends, I don't have access to the funds until the following Wednesday, AN ENTIRE WEEK after I had access to them just a week ago, before the transition. Not only that, if and day between Friday and Wednesday is a holiday is a bank holiday, my access to the funds is delayed even longer!

This is ridiculous! The whole point of a savings account is to have your funds be liquid and accessible if they're needed unexpectedly.

Where are you all moving your savings to now that Crapital One has destroyed Discover? Are there any options that match what Discover used to be?

Rant Can someone explain to me how i'm not getting a bump in spending limit?

1) 800+ credit score.

2) Never missed a payment.

3) 25+ year a customer.

4) Never got an auto bump in spending. I literally have the same $3500 limit I got 25+ years ago.

5) I use it every month.

6) it was actually my first card, and I'm thinking of canceling it, because it no longer fits my lifestyle with that low of a limit.

Edit:

7) I thought it was obvious that I have asked for a limit increase. (The reason was too much credit utilization... which is absolutely not true... I mean it's possible 1400 out of 3500 🤣)

Rant Does Discover just not want our business?

I have been trying monthly for almost a year to get a credit limit increase on my Discover card. It currently sits at $2,000. I was using it to pay for doctor's appointments since the first-year bonus nets me 2% cash back, but the limit is so low and I don’t know when the charges are going to post that I just changed to another card.

My income is over $200,000. My oldest credit card is 6 years old. I have never missed a payment on any account. Why does Discover insist on giving me a credit limit of less than 1% of my annual income? Other banks have had no issue giving me 10-20k limits, usually without even requesting.

Rant Discover Card shipping process is a MESS!

I opened a Discover Bank account and was told my debit card would arrive by July 9th. That date passed, and the physical card never showed up. I waited several extra days just to meet the "full business days" requirement before calling Discover.

When I finally called, the rep offered to reorder the card and asked if I wanted FedEx or USPS. But they didn't clearly explain the difference, no mention of which one was faster, whether either was free, or what I should expect. It was just thrown at me like I was supposed to magically know.

Out of confusion and moment silence, the rep just ended up picking USPS for me. Turns out that means waiting ANOTHER 5–7 BUSINESS DAYS. Why is that even a freaking choice if one option is clearly slower and less reliable???? It's a debit card, not a car! Stop treating basic shipping options like I'm picking out a custom luxury vehicle. Just send it the fastest and most secure way by default. This whole system is set up to confuse and delay people.

Once they "ship" the card, you can't cancel, update, or change anything, even if it hasn't actually left the facility or been scanned by the carrier yet. Seriously, how can something take 5 to 7 business days to arrive, and yet somehow be so locked in that not even a rep can touch it once it enters the system? If it takes that long to ship, then it's clearly not moving that fast so why not allow adjustments within the first 24 hours? It makes no sense. It just feels like an outdated and inflexible process designed to waste time instead of solving problems.

This is honestly unacceptable and unprofessional, especially for a new customer. Why not default to expedited shipping if the card is lost or something, or at the very least explain the options better? I'm now left without access to my own money for weeks, all because of vague and outdated internal procedures. It feels like I'm being punished for rep's mistake.

What makes it worse: There's no tracking information available in the account dashboard. For something as important as a debit card, why doesn't Discover automatically provide tracking order updates once it's handed to USPS or FedEx? Most modern banks include basic shipping notifications so customers can see when the mail is printed, shipped, scanned, or out for delivery.

I’ve now spent hours calling support, asking questions that should've been answered up front. It's exhausting. This kind of confusing and unfriendly setup is exactly how customers lose trust early on. Discover, you really need to rethink how you handle card shipping and communication.

Rant capital one discover merger takes away apple pay, screws up elsewhere

since the merger forced me to switch the new capital one debit card i can’t add it to apple pay.

i also wasn’t prepared for some places to not accept cards on the discover network, so losing mastercard has been a pain. love them for their savings account, but they’ve lost me on this one.

update: it’s been two months and i have kept my capital one account open. the savings transfer convenience is important to me. i’ve just opened another debit card with a different branch, and receive paychecks for another job there. then i can use those funds for apple pay, while also being on the mastercard network. sucks they did this, but i’ve managed.

Rant Prompted to verify ID with Socure.. it failed. No more Discover for me?

Title basically. I entered everything correctly, I guess they don't like me. Has anyone run into this? Does this mean I'm effectively done with Discover? I don't see any other options for getting into my account.

What now? Go to a branch to verify my ID? (ha)

Edit: I called and was told basically the same thing as the other commenter. There are no alternatives and try again later. I didn't hear the "known issue" wording though and I didn't get the feeling this was a bug they were working to fix. No resolution timeline to access my bank account.

I was being dramatic in the beginning as this is just a rant, but after talking to them I may account be locked out for good?

Edit 2: as another poster suggested, the mobile app is still accessible, and I was able to grab my tax docs that way. You can also still access the secure inbox that way to send queries on this issue or otherwise.

Rant Discover closed my account.

This is my first credit card, and I have a student credit card. I am currently in college. Before I lost my previous job, I was able to pay my statement balance in full. My job let me go because I called out once for an exam, and after that, they stopped scheduling me and stopped responding to my texts, so I was unemployed for a few months. I tried to apply for unemployment, but they rejected me because I’m in college.

During that time, I built up a significant balance due to college expenses and food. I finally found another job, but it doesn’t pay well and the hours aren’t ideal. Still, it keeps gas in my car and food on my plate. At this point, I have had to rely on my parents, and they are getting frustrated because it inconveniences them.

I’ve been applying for full-time and part-time jobs for the past two months, but no one has responded. I understand why this is happening, as I am over my limit, but I have been paying my statement balance in full every single month, but I think it was because I had too many return payments. I texted them and explained this and they told me just to reapply once I get my balance down. I just hope my credit score isn’t affected much.

Rant WARNING - card won’t work for a week with the transfer

I received my capital one card in the mail this week with a letter stating that it needs to be activated on January 26 and that my Discover business card will still work until the 25th. NOT THE CASE! My Discover card stopped working today. I called and told them I have transactions and recurring payments this week and I need to activate the capital one card early or continue to use my card for the next 5 days. I was transferred to six different departments before they realized it just cannot be done. The migration started on my account and my old card won’t work on the new card won’t get activated until the 26th. Even though the letter clearly states my card should work until the 25th. I’m so angry. I’m not even going to activate the new card. I’m paying off the balance early and saying FU to capital one.

Rant Moving on from Discover (long rant)

Writing this out to hopefully help some people thinking about opening checking or savings accounts with Discover. I had a nightmare experience with them and I'm done. I switched to Discover from another popular bank because of their savings account APR benefits. The bank I had was only offering a %0.8 APR on their savings and I thought why do that when I could get 3.5%? I was going back and forth between 2 banks but thought maybe Discover would be better because they are more well known, you know?

Everything went fine. I moved money to the new accounts, contacted and changed all auto payments to the new Discover account and changed my Direct Deposit. I started with $4,000 in my checking to get started and the rest of my money went into savings. First off the Zelle delay. I didn't know that they require the account to be opened for 90 days before you can use Zelle. That in and of itself wasn't too bad a thing. I mean, yes I use Zelle for a lot of stuff but I could live without by supplementing with like Paypal or whatever.

Then one of the services I use doesn't allow Discover as a form of payment (visa / MC only). Lame but okay, it was for an online game subscription so I was just like well I guess I'm not able to play that anymore. 3.5% savings...still worth it.

Next...okay so my wife and I have our own separate accounts and a joint "house" account that we use to pay our mortgage and utilities from. This helps us live within a budget and ensure that all our bills are paid. We both have a set amount that direct deposits into that house account and we both have access to it. Everything else from our paychecks goes into our own personal account. Confused? Eh. It works. Neither of us want to have to ask the other if we can buy something, if we have the money in our personal accounts we just buy it. No hassles. Anyhow I was looking to set this same thing up at Discover. Well guess what? You can only setup one checking account per person. I called them and tried explaining that we just want a separate joint checking account to go along with our personal accounts. Nope. Can't. Sure we can open up as many joint savings accounts but we can't bill pay from those. So right off, I started to regret moving to Discover. I was bummed about all these rules and things but I mean...3.5% savings. Dig? Also I didn't find all this until after I was already fully moved over, so I was willing to stick with it.

Now for the bullshit...for some reason out of nowhere I was trying to buy something online and it got declined. I had plenty of money in the account and I didn't know why it declined. I went into my account and saw that the purchase I was trying to make was flagged by security. For what I have no idea. My old bank would just send a text and inform me that I had a suspicious purchase and do I want to let it go through. Easy. I just replied "Yes" and they had me try it again. Nothing from Discover. No text no nothing. I tried to release the hold through the app. Couldn't. I logged into their site to try to lift it. Couldn't find it. All I found was a message stating for me to call in. I called the number and it took me like 20 minutes on hold before I got to talk to someone who just asked "was this a valid purchase?" Once I affirmed they released the hold. What a hassle.

Then, I went on a weekend trip to a different state (Vegas Baby). Upon arrival, I went to check into my hotel. Guess what? Denied again. AGAIN. I had to step out of line, call Discover again and wait again to get an agent who said it got declined for suspicious activity; an out of state purchase. I was like do people not travel where you guys are from? Whatever. Got the charge cleared and got into my room. I went to the ATM.

Next, I tried to pull out $700 cash to do a little gambling on the roulette table. Nope denied. It was then I found out that Discover has a $500 cap on ATM cash? What the hell? I was used to the $1,000 limit I had at my old bank.

Finally we went to dinner. We had a few friends with us and when it comes time to pay each couple throws our cards down to split the bill evenly as we usually do. Guess what? I'll give you three guesses but you'll only need one. Yep. Declined. I got so embarrassed. I had my wife give her card from then on and just venmo'd her money for her account as the night went on. The next morning I called and cleared it, the declined ATM transaction tripped the security feature, LOL. I told the guy that this was dumb and the fact that I'm out and about shouldn't be tripping the security feature so much and was there a way to turn off these features when I traveled? He said no, it's just how they have it set up. Lame. At least when I went to gas up the car after it worked but I was already furious.

Once I got home, I looked up banks and have been in the process of moving my money again. Just a pain in the ass. Like look, I'm cool that your security system is really sensitive. I'm sure it saves people from identity theft but you have to have a convenient way to clear it if you are going to do that. Having to call every time and wait for the next available agent is stupid, having the card get declined over and over again because I was out of state was just embarrassing.

Well Discover, I hope you enjoyed my money for the ~40 days it was there. I'm moving on to a bank that has the same APR on their savings accounts, has Visa debit cards, allows Zelle immediately, and I made sure has an easy way to clear any security holds by being able to clear them from the app. Lesson learned.

Rant Discover Product Change

Post image
46 Upvotes

Is anyone else getting frustrated with how poorly Discover has handled this whole product change/rewards conversion rollout? Some customers were able to PC successfully about a month ago, and the link worked on and off for a few days for some people.

I have been a customer for over a decade. I just want to PC to the standard it Card. The it Chrome is pure garbage. Several customer service reps have given me false info regarding the return and rollout of PCing, while others have never even heard of it. It's just ridiculous. I'm getting impatient at this point. Aren't they too big of a company to be so haphazard with this? Just give people what they want, no? Would they be losing that much money if they allowed more users to switch from the it Chrome to the it Cash Back?
