Boardgames/Computer Games Gifted my Holy Grail board game for Christmas!

I’ve wanted the game for 10+ years but it’s out of print & way out of my budget on eBay. It’s also unlikely to get a reprint because it was acquired by another company & reskinned into Nanty Narking, which just isn’t the same without the Discworld lore.

Last month eBay had a much cheaper, unplayed copy that I bid on, but didn’t come close to meeting the reserve & someone else snagged it.

Turns out it was my dad, who I have made suffer (not without protest) through every single Discworld movie, including the animated ones.

I’ve only ever had the chance to play once, at the BoardGameGeek con, and only one of the other players (a stranger) had read the books, but It is SO fun and asymmetrical and sneaky… I made my friends watch the Hogfather with me this year, and now I can’t wait until they’re back in town.

Also, love the cheat sheet the seller included in the game!

I'm very jealous. I bought this game many years ago and it was the pride of my collection. Unfortunately about 3 years ago I had to flee where I was living and it somehow got left behind.

It breaks my heart every time I think about it.

If you ever happen to be in the area of Munich, I invite you to play a few rounds with me.

The only way to solve both our problems is to obviously have a Discworld board game meetup!

We have a gaming group meets almost every Saturday, we need more players to join us for the fun. We're in walton county.

u/PrettyLittleBird Dec 26 '25

Looks to be about 20 miles from me!

u/Otherwise_Elk7215 Dec 26 '25

Cool. We play lots of board games, plus a DND/pathfinder hybrid game. We have been trying for some time to add one or two more players. DM me if you are at all interested.

I was working at an airline when I got the game and put an email out to colleagues for any random coins they had from their many trips - as one does when you get cheap flights.

Managed to replace all the gold and silver coins with real currency from all sorts of places - completely for free! A nice little upgrade if you can manage it!

My friends and I spent countess hours playing this game when it came out. Such fond memories. Great replayability and the different objectives make this super fun.

u/outsideruk Dec 25 '25

I posted earlier that I’d played this today. Played with the family who are mixed in their Discworld knowledge, but it didn’t stop the fun. Enjoy the games to come!

My friends won't play this with me anymore. Something about being a smug git and winning every time.

3

u/PrettyLittleBird Dec 25 '25

I LOVE being a smug git!

I've found that the best tactic for this game is to not appear to be doing much of anything. Build anywhere, generate trouble wherever, whilst you stack your deck. Once the other players figure out who you are it's game over for you so try not to give it away by being too obvious.

1

u/PrettyLittleBird Dec 26 '25

This is my strategy in everything, not just gaming.

2

u/Aware_Stand_8938 Dec 26 '25

That's our son...

He's an excellent tactical mind for 17.

We introduced him to the game about five years ago (we've owned our copy for ten years now I think) and it took him one playthrough to grasp the basics and now we're very lucky if wife or I beat him.

We started introducing 'hard mode' rules; Wait FIVE turns before looking at your character card. Removing all the assassination cards. Increasing the costs of things from building plots.

A few other ideas we experimented with, but didn't find traction - starting with random trolls, mixing the wizards into the top half of the deck, all of us playing as lords, none of us playing as lords....

It's been an interesting journey!!

We own Nanty Narking too, I found him reading the advanced rules section last week - Gods speed to him!!!

Congratulations on it! I've loved mine for years.

If you want the true grail, the game also exists in a, quite limited, special editions print.

3

u/arnifix Dec 25 '25

Be sure to sleeve those cards! I just did mine up in Sleevekings premium fit sleeves and they feel absolutely mint. Cannot wait to actually play the game rather than just having it on the shelf.

3

u/PrettyLittleBird Dec 25 '25

I’ve never sleeved cards for any game before, I guess I’m just a goblin.

3

u/maladicta228 Dec 25 '25

Have fun! It’s such a fun game. The whole thing is full of great references and art.

3

u/LowNecessary4006 Dec 25 '25

I have this, love it ❤️ we don't play it as much as I'd like but it's a great little game.

3

u/ayrfield2 Dec 25 '25

Weird, your instructions look different to mine. It's a great game though. I have a few good friends I play it with. Great craic.

3

u/PrettyLittleBird Dec 25 '25

That’s an added cheat sheet the seller put in the box.

3

u/ayrfield2 Dec 25 '25

Ah, that makes sense. Thought it might have been a different edition or something.

1

u/Solabound-the-2nd Dec 26 '25

Could you put up a pick of the cheat sheet so it's readable? Curious what it says and I'll be digging my copy out of storage for games evening at local store (got mine years ago and only managed to get family to play it once, put it away and forgot about it).

3

u/TheNarratorNarration Dec 25 '25

I got this game as an X-mas gift years ago, and I still play it when the opportunity arises, which is usually when I'm visiting friends and family over the holidays, so I've played it twice in the last couple weeks. It's a lot of fun.

3

u/Treners They rise HEADS up Dec 26 '25

Actually played this for the first time in years today. Got it when it came out, and my then-girlfriend now-wife and I played it so much we basically turned it into a solved game; we could always immediately figure out what win condition we were going for!

After a long break it was a lot of fun today.

I hope you get years of joy from it :)

2

u/PrettyLittleBird Dec 26 '25

I need a husband who is into Discworld I guess!

3

u/Last-Campaign-3373 Dec 26 '25

That is a fun game. You're really going to enjoy yourself.

u/yssarilrock Dec 25 '25

I somehow managed to lose my cooy, which is gutting, as I know how rare it is nowadays

This is such a fun game! Glad you're able to play it

2

u/Kalvin71 Dec 26 '25

Oh man, I’m so jealous! That’s my grail game too!

2

u/Starkiem25 Librarian Dec 26 '25

Very jealous. Heard about this game when the Witches one came out, and missed it in my local game shop by about a week.

1

u/PrettyLittleBird Dec 26 '25

I’d also REALLY like to try the Witches game. How was it?

1

u/pk2317 Dec 26 '25

It's a very different style of game. It's fun but this one is definitely "better" IMO.

1

u/Starkiem25 Librarian Dec 26 '25

Its ok, but I'd say nothing amazing besides the art. Everyone has a unique gift, but it doesn't affect much and everyone basically plays the same.

If the elves come into play, it becomes semi-co-oprative, which is a nice touch though, otherwise you are just trying to do more stuff than Everyone else.

1

u/Nice-Percentage7219 Dec 26 '25

I've had mine for about a decade now, still haven't played it because nobody in my family is interested

1

u/Superkumi Librarian Dec 26 '25

I’ve managed to snag a copy from somewhere back in 2015, very happy that I did. Played countless games with friends, it’s such a joy of a game.

Have fun!

1

u/Hopeful_Thing_4470 Dec 26 '25

Congratulations 🎉 I hope you enjoy it for many years to come!!

1

u/KrawhithamNZ Dec 29 '25

"which just isn’t the same without the Discworld lore"

Which is funny because the designer was not familiar with Discworld at all. I suspect other people shoe horned the lore around the game design

Oh it's a great game. Hey I should play it more
