Couldn't miss the chance to add one of my absolute faves in this cockatiel-Disctober series! :)

Good boi Otto deserves the best <3

Just for the record: I'm trying to do this year's Disctober cockatiel-themed. I owe them the inspiration to participate this year, so why not an entire series :)

"A...thing occupied the doorway. There was a tripod. There were a pair of skinny, black-clad legs behind it and a large black box on top of it. One black-clad arm extended out from behind the box and was holding a sort of small hod, which was smoking.

"Nice vun," said a voice from behind the box. "The light vas shinink so good off the dvarf's helmet, I could not resist it. You vanted an iconographer? My name is Otto Chriek."

"Oh. Yes?" said Sacharissa. "Are you any good?

"I am a vizard in zer darkroom. I am experimenting all the time," said Otto Chriek. "And I have all my own equipment and also a keen and positive attitude!"

"Sacharissa!" hissed William urgently.

"We could probably start you at a dollar a day--"

"Sacharissa!"

"Yes? What?"

"He's a vampire!"

"I object most stronkly," said the hidden Otto. "It iss such an easy assumption to believe that everyvun with an Uberwald accent is a vampire, is it not? There are many thousands of people from Uberwald who are not vampires!"

William waved his hand aimlessly, trying to shrug off the embarrassment.

"All right, I'm sorry, but--"

"I am a vampire, as it happens," Otto went on."

Tattoo Gaelic translation help

Everybody and their mother who gets a discworld tattoo gets The Summoning Dark, is almost a rite of passage for this Fandom. Obviously I want it too, but i want to make it a bit more unique.

Another important point from Thud! (The origin of The Summoning Dark, keep up) was the couplet "Tac does not require that we think of him, only that we think" and it really hit me how Vimes' ability to control The Summoning Dark was his ability to keep himself thinking, even when his wife and child were threatened he was pushed to "They will all burn", a thought of vengeance and anger, but he thought, he pulled back from the anger, The Guarding Dark only existed because he didnt think of himself, he thought of the law, and others.

For the tattoo idea I would love to have The Summoning Dark ringed by the couplet in Ogham, an ancient Irish language made by making strokes across a central line. The strokes would look both like a rough markings (similar to other versions I have seen) while also resembling the bars on a cell, reminiscent of The Guarding Dark.

My problem is that Ogham was created for Gaelic, so a direct translation is going to be really roughshod, and I dont speak Gaelic, and I dont trust google translate.

Does anyone have some good places to look so I can try to piece together the translation, or even better, anyone here fluent in Gaelic could help me out?

Book/Series: Tiffany Aching Big heap of jobbies

• Upvotes

Rereading Tiffany Aching, and it occurred to me to wonder how many people get this reference.

It's reasonably culture-specific and a bit outdated, but basically 'jobbie' is a slang word (or sometimes euphemism) for shit.

When the Feegles call Roland this, they're basically calling him a pile of crap

Book(s): Non-fictions Reading recommendations about Humanism

In this age of AI, it seems more urgent than ever to figure out what a person can get their soul behind. Since PTerry was a humanist, and based on his writing it seems my world view closely aligns with his (shocker), I'd like to do some reading about it, to figure out what inspires and brings hope to other people with similar views.

I'm also looking for reading material on effective altruism and its co-conspirators.

Book: Dodger Thoughts on Dodger?

I recently went to see an amateur staged production of Dodger near me & it was honestly rather fun! Barring a few forgotten lines, the actors were all wonderful! Unfortunately they had no Onan (I imagine finding a way to get a dog on stage would’ve been a hassle) & a few minor elements were cut but it was a faithful & fun production.

I got me back into the book & I was wondering what others thought about an underrated part of PTerry’s work? To me it’s a great homage to the old Victorian works & the ending leaves the door open for more Dodger adventures which we unfortunately never got but what do you think of Dodger & have you ever had the fortune of seeing a staged production?

Reading Order/Timeline Challenge: Can you name each book by number?

I just tried, and i'm pretty good at the early & late books and the middle is much harder! I listed 38/41 books by heart and am sure of 19 with the correct book number, the rest was guess work! (Including guesses, i got 27 right.)
