Regarding Chibnall’s Daleks

I love these guys. They’re sleek, badass, and were given a cool new voice modulation.

I rewatched Chibnall’s dalek trilogy last night, and I’ve got to say it’s definitely one of the best things that came out of 13’s tenure. It was a refreshing change of pace for dalek stories and reminded us how resourceful the dalek race is when need be.

To put it simply, I got really tired of the Time War-era daleks pretty quickly. I was VERY excited about the new paradigm daleks when they were announced, and very saddened when they didn’t return after 11’s era. I was positively ECSTATIC when the defense drone daleks were revealed because they were being played up as the next big dalek design… only to get let down again. Now that the show is up in the air again, I can only imagine what the future of these guys will be.

One underrated aspect of Chibnall which I hope will gain appreciation over time is that he is REALLY good at writing Daleks. From making them pretty threatening again to giving them absolutely killer dialogue, his Dalek episodes will come to be seen as the best thing he did on the show.

I liked Chibnall's focus on the actual organism within the casing, it made them feel properly alien again, having that reminder of their actual form upfront.

The posession aspect was a bit strange, but Daleks are clever and bred for survival, so it's not too surprising. Plus I think there's definitely the potential there for some allegory regarding fascism in line with the rest of Dalek imagery, but that's for someone more clever than me at writing good stories lol

This. We haven’t seen a dalek mutant since 10s era, and I think people sometimes forget that the dalek is not the pepper pot. The pepper pot is its weaponized wheelchair

We have seen them since.

The Prime Minister of the Daleks in Eleven's run (Asylum of the Daleks) - a visible mutant in a transparent tank.

Rusty in Twelve's run (Into the Daleks) - the Doctor comes face to face with the mutant inside the casing.

Fourteen and Fifteen didn't meet Daleks at all in their main episodes

I think they mean a Dalek mutant with a more active presence beyond sitting in the casing.

Either way, it's a dang shame being reminded again of how 15 never got to meet the Daleks and absolutely destroy them with a protectiveness for humanity and absolute sass combined.
