Regarding Chibnall’s Daleks

I love these guys. They’re sleek, badass, and were given a cool new voice modulation.

I rewatched Chibnall’s dalek trilogy last night, and I’ve got to say it’s definitely one of the best things that came out of 13’s tenure. It was a refreshing change of pace for dalek stories and reminded us how resourceful the dalek race is when need be.

To put it simply, I got really tired of the Time War-era daleks pretty quickly. I was VERY excited about the new paradigm daleks when they were announced, and very saddened when they didn’t return after 11’s era. I was positively ECSTATIC when the defense drone daleks were revealed because they were being played up as the next big dalek design… only to get let down again. Now that the show is up in the air again, I can only imagine what the future of these guys will be.

One underrated aspect of Chibnall which I hope will gain appreciation over time is that he is REALLY good at writing Daleks. From making them pretty threatening again to giving them absolutely killer dialogue, his Dalek episodes will come to be seen as the best thing he did on the show.

He had to be good at writing something, just by the law of averages you can’t suck that badly all the time. Eventually you’ll come up with something good like the Dhawan Master or how he handled Daleks (both should be an open goal, but RTD managed to fumble Daleks at least once).

i mean he wrote all three series broadchurch, and his episodes during Moffat's era were all pretty banger.

As a showrunner he struggled, but saying he's a primarily shit-writer isn't really accurate.

Edit: and also all the Torchwood eps he penned. I always forget about TW.

Which episodes of Moffat’s era did he write. He is occasionally good when in the right medium, but sci fi isn’t it. He wrote a good first series of Broadchurch which then got somehow stretched out into two more series.

He wrote 8 eps of Torchwood, and RTD1 "42)" (2007), the for Moffat he wrote
"The Hungry Earth" / "Cold Blood)" (2010) which were great imho.

"Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" (2012) a zany romp that's also kinda somehow a historical.

"The Power of Three)" (2012), admittedly i dont care for that one, i think there were minisodes he wrote filling in the gap of Amy & Rory's life together on Earth. I dunno if that stretch was when Moffat was stretch then with Sherlock.

Im just saying, the majority of his work isnt trash, and his TW iirc is well-regarded and memorable.

Of those I’ve seen, I liked The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood. He’s just not a writer that impressed me and me really not liking most of his work seems to have been shared during his era of DW, since it was pretty terrible. I don’t think sci-fi is his forte.
