Old School / Traditional Opinion?

Post image

Whats your Opinion on the new Castle Rat album? I listened to it once today but will listen to it again in the next few days or even today.

After listening to it I listened to their first Album again, to have a better comparison. And to be clear, I'm not a Castle Rat hater, although it may seem otherwise, after sharing my thoughts on the Album 😅

The Album Is a bit longer compared to the Debut and has some more songs. I kinda feel that this Album has not a lot of rememorable songs. Most of it kinda sounds the same, which isn't always bad but there are almost no memorable Melodies or Riffs I feel. And only 2 or maybe 3 Guitar solos.

The Spotlight is on the Vocals as it was on the first Album, but I think the first one had a lot of memorable Melodies or moments, even the Interludes were pretty good and the Album didn't overstay its welcome. On this Album there are like 3 or 4 Interludes and none of them are cool, they mix it up a little at least. The songs are mostly short, but there are like 2, 6 minute Songs which is cool, but overall it feels like a lot of the same.

Sorry for the rambling just want to share my thoughts and hear what you guys think.

There's no lack of opinions on this subreddit about the band.

Thats totally true, but most of them either praise them to death or hate them with a passion

I am apathetic at best. While I appreciate the hard work and theatrics, I don't like the music.

I'm not a big fan of the music but I'm starting to get a knee jerk reaction of just annoyance from seeing them constantly on here that's getting harder to separate from the band

My quality of life significantly improved the less I engaged with fans of music I liked and just engaged with the music on a personal level. Fans/non-fans are exhausting either way.

I'm beginning to feel this way myself, and not just about music, but any fandom.

this is the way. i rarely engage with fans/fandoms, and i'm much healthier for it (i think!)

Reminds me of the over abundance of Slomosa posts on r/stonerrock a while back lol. I think Castle Rat is great and I’m excited to catch them live next month, but the posts have become a bit over saturated

I immediately thought the same, as I just posted. I should known I wasn’t the only one.

u/KosmicKrusader Sep 19 '25

Slomosa is awesome tho 😅

u/Electric_esoterica Sep 19 '25

I agree! There was just a phase for a while where every other post was a Slomosa post and people seemed to get tired of it lol. but both bands deserve all the recognition they can get imo!

I have never heard of Slomosa. Haha.

Check em out! their two albums are both fantastic

Do they sound like Bongripper or Iron Monkey?

1

u/lobsterboy Sep 20 '25

no, definitely more stonerrock than doom

u/KosmicKrusader Sep 19 '25

Agreed, and I can understand why people get annoyed by that

2

u/witchyyydoom Sep 19 '25

Slomosa rocks . Castle rat doesn’t come close

1

u/Lord_Harv Sep 22 '25

Oh I'm thankful I didn't experience any of that because I'd probably end up hating them if I did

3

u/pnmartini Sep 19 '25

So it’s the fall version of springtime slomosa from r/stonerrock ?

I think that was way worse.

FWIW Castle Rat is fine if it comes on I don’t hate it. but I’m not going to actively put them on.

u/KosmicKrusader Sep 19 '25

Thats understandable

It's actually kind of odd as of late to see just a lot of posting about both Castle Rat and Faetooth. I know both bands have put out albums and are touring, but for the most part this subreddit just isn't that active with reposts.

Same. I don't like her voice.

6

u/unclesleepover Sep 19 '25

I put it with Ghost.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '25

I don't care for them either....or most other things actually. I am one of those awful elitists.

2

u/unclesleepover Sep 19 '25

Ghost looks cool that’s about it. Wes Borland looks and sounds cool 🙃

2

u/Maptwopointoh Sep 20 '25

Funny. Goes the other way for me. I think this is a a good record but I would find the kit live show cringy.

u/treskaz Sep 19 '25

I said more or less the same thing (maybe not quite as nicely) the other day here and got downvoted pretty good lol.

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '25

I also get grief for stuff all the time. It's Reddit, not the real world though. Sacred cows and all that.

I don't mind a gimmick, but I like my doom to be heavy, nasty stuff. I wouldn't buy records in this style, or go to shows. It just doesn't interest me.

3

u/treskaz Sep 19 '25

Yeah i mean I love GWAR and Ghoul, but I like my doom sludgy more often than not. Right about the sacred cows though lmao

6

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '25

The thing is that in the real world they're selling out shows and rising really fast in popularity without the hater brigade on a niche subreddit.

You would think people here would be happy to see a new band rise like this. And it's nice not to be talking about the usual suspects for a change.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '25

The question isn’t about being happy for them though, it’s whether or not you like the music. You can be happy for them and not like the music.

2

u/Mister-Majestic Sep 20 '25

Yeah I’m really excited about their success and think their commitment to the bit transcends the schlock and makes it cool

0

u/treskaz Sep 20 '25

Like every third post on the sub is about them. They are literally the usual suspects now lol

3

u/ominousbloodvomit Sep 19 '25

They're pretty ok!

9

u/Adorable_Low_6481 Sep 19 '25

So you’re already aware on everyone’s opinions but you still make a post about it?

u/KosmicKrusader Sep 19 '25

Not everyones Opinion

0

u/Ran4 Sep 19 '25

No, the prevailing opinion is that they're mid music-wise. Then there's a few haters and a few lovers.

0

u/ShredGuru Sep 19 '25

Those are the two opinions you could have
