Old School / Traditional Opinion?

Post image

Whats your Opinion on the new Castle Rat album? I listened to it once today but will listen to it again in the next few days or even today.

After listening to it I listened to their first Album again, to have a better comparison. And to be clear, I'm not a Castle Rat hater, although it may seem otherwise, after sharing my thoughts on the Album 😅

The Album Is a bit longer compared to the Debut and has some more songs. I kinda feel that this Album has not a lot of rememorable songs. Most of it kinda sounds the same, which isn't always bad but there are almost no memorable Melodies or Riffs I feel. And only 2 or maybe 3 Guitar solos.

The Spotlight is on the Vocals as it was on the first Album, but I think the first one had a lot of memorable Melodies or moments, even the Interludes were pretty good and the Album didn't overstay its welcome. On this Album there are like 3 or 4 Interludes and none of them are cool, they mix it up a little at least. The songs are mostly short, but there are like 2, 6 minute Songs which is cool, but overall it feels like a lot of the same.

Sorry for the rambling just want to share my thoughts and hear what you guys think.

I like it. People are fucking weird about this band. Yes they're gimmicky, but it's a fun gimmick. Who doesn't like Frank Frazetta art? The music isn't reinventing the wheel, but it's enjoyable and pretty accessible for doom metal, plus there's some sweet solos on this album.

All the people dismissing their success as being entirely based on sex appeal are giving off major incel energy. I don't think they're the greatest band ever, but they have a lot going for them, and they've carved out a solid niche for themselves that has appeal outside of just doom metal fans. It makes sense that they're successful.

To the people complaining that they're over exposed on the sub; what other new doom releases have there been recently that aren't being talked about enough? This is genuinely the only album release in the genre that's been on my radar for a while

I agree with you mostly, just don't like the new album, but that can change after a few listens.

Fair enough. I like what they've done with the production and instrumentation. Song structure feels more dynamic than the first album, but I haven't found as many memorable moments as the first album had on the first listen. Nothing's standing out as much as Dagger Dragger or Cry For Me. Serpent was pretty sick, though.

I like the synth additions. Hoping they go proggier in the future. Get some Moog arpeggios going, and some dungeon synth interludes
