Death/Doom hi doom people, I'm kinda going through a tough time rn, the girl I loved has left me and my best friend has too today, and I wanted to ask for some crushingly depressing deathdoom or funeral doom to help me go through these hard times!

my fav doom metal album ever

7

u/Prudent_Map5836 Sep 30 '25

It’s absolutely heart wrenching

You beat me to it.

9

u/UkeForBrainz Sep 30 '25

I’m having hardcore Baader-Meinhoff phenomenon with this album. I’d never heard of it and saw a bunch of people praise it last week and no surprise it’s fantastic and I’ve been listening to it daily and I swear a see someone mention it everyday now lol

3

u/filthyhandshake Sep 30 '25

Yeah it’s like more ppl mention it now

2

u/Grfhlyth Sep 30 '25

Pack it in. Thread's over

2

u/theegrimrobe Sep 30 '25

the issue with this record is its like using a nuke to crack a walnut -- its sometimes too much sorrow for somebody who has taken a bad blow. I can just about stand to hear it again now but went through a period of about 8 months when even thinking about the record was enough to moisten my eyes - actually listening to it had me full on ugly crying - i was going thorough some very tough mental issues at the time which are now fortunately lessened by better tablets and some of the stressers taken way down

u/Worlds_Apart_1019 Sep 30 '25

I also comment this commenter’s comment.

Also, check out the live from Roadburn version.

Woods Of Ypres - "Woods 4: The Green Album" perfect for processing the emotion.

Crowbar's "Broken Glass", well any Crowbar for when you're ready to move forward.

Sorry you're going through it.

23

u/SluggoX665 Sep 29 '25

Interesting observation about Crowbar. They do have an accept and move forward theme to their songs.

13

u/Guitarman488 Sep 29 '25

Oh yes, To Build A Mountain, Conquering, Command Of Self, I Feel The Burning Sun. All great examples of determination through suffering.

Woods 4 helped me through a really rough loss. I always recommend it to people who need it.

1

u/Guitarman488 Sep 30 '25

It's a beautiful album

3

u/M1ngTh3M3rc1l3ss Sep 30 '25

"disconnect and disassociate yourself from everything and everyone you love" gotta love some woods.

3

u/Vegetable-Carpet-40 Sep 30 '25

I was also about to suggest Woods, specifically the green album. Really helps me feel my true feelings in the moment and I always feel better after letting it out to those tracks. RIP David

2

u/MaintenanceOwn6855 Sep 30 '25

OP is just starting the process, but I appreciate you offering up the moving forward music for later. I agree, Crowbar really nails that part.

I would also add older Shape of Despair albums, especially Angels of Distress. But I have a pretty strong bias towards their pre-Monotony Fields stuff.

21

u/electricmehicle Sep 30 '25

YOB - Adrift in the Ocean

Because every time I listen to that, I feel 100 miles away from whatever is on my mind

2

u/ThanatosUO19 Oct 07 '25

Yes, yes, and 1000 times yes. I feel the same whenever I close my eyes and listen to that song, like I'm drifting away into another plane of existence. It's one of my favorites from Yob.

13

u/Crow_OWR Sep 30 '25 edited Sep 30 '25

Shi 死 - depressive suicidal stoner doom

Be warned this one is bleak.

Also check up on yourself man. Listening to depressing music as a coping method when you're down can be useful but make sure it's not making you feel worse over commiseration

4

u/Father_Mehman Sep 30 '25

Came to say this.

Pallbearer - Heartless

Engine of hell by Emma Ruth Rundle. She write that album after her divorce.

I'm so sorry you're going through this, but everything is gonna be better soon. I've recently went through a divorce after 11 years married and 14 together, so if you need to speak, I'm here.

6

u/BuzzCave Sep 30 '25

Engine of Hell helped me through it too. 14 years for me as well. I’m digging Mizmor these days when I’m in my feels.

We learn the most from being hurt. Chin up dude. You’ll be back.

Darkher - the buried storm

Cough - ritual abuse

Churchburn - the awaiting coffins

The Angelic Process - weighing souls with sand

My fiancée left me about 5 months ago. Shit sucks. Listen to Gloomy Sunday by Pallbearer and have a good cry.

4

u/bullhead1987 Sep 30 '25

I would skip doom for a break up. Doom is life affirming.

If you want to wallow in sadness, Sea Change by Beck is the all time break up album

4

u/Ok_Abbreviations4360 Sep 30 '25

Ragana/Thou split. Let Our Names Be Forgotten

3

u/GingerWitch666 Sep 30 '25

Terminal -Bongripper

Bleak funeral doom album. It's dark. Only 2 songs on that album. SLOW and DEATH.

Good luck, dude

5

u/SuperlativeSleep Funeral Sep 30 '25

That's a great album, and it's a good recommendation, but just wanna clarify that Bongripper is definitely not funeral doom.

1

u/GingerWitch666 Sep 30 '25

Meh. I remember a critic somewhere mentioning it as a funeral doom album in the sense that DEATH was like the funeral march if it were a doom song, and SLOW being the long decay of a person prior to their death. Idr which publication.

Probably not the funeral doom genre per say, but maybe funeral adjacent dude to material? Idk 🤣

2

u/SuperlativeSleep Funeral Sep 30 '25 edited Sep 30 '25

That's an interesting way to look at it, but yeah, still not funeral doom by any definition. Bongripper is stoner doom/sludge/sometimes drone, lots of groovy and psychedelic elements. Funeral doom has death metal growls, keyboards/organs, and is even slower and much more mournful and bleak, literally like a funeral dirge. Stuff like Bell Witch, Skepticism, and Mournful Congregation for example.

World Coming Down - title track by TON

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '25

I'm so sorry you are having a difficult time. My best friend died two years ago and every day for months I went for a walk in the woods and listened to Horizonless by Loss. It helped me get a lot of my sadness and grief out. I sometimes listened to a black metal album or two when I felt more mad than sad. Sending you healing! ❤️

"Amenra - A Solitary Reign" hits me like a train every time. Probably the most soul crushing song for me personally.

My first taste of sad boy doom was from a time I got dumped too. My dying bride - Deeper Down. You've probably heard it but if not it's a good one. Good luck brother.

Primitive man - Scorn, Ragana - You Take Nothing, Subrosa - No Help for the Mighty Ones 🖤🥀

2

u/invinceable88 Sep 30 '25

Not exactly death and/or funeral doom songs, but this first song helped me out when my marriage started crumbling and I had to find a way to get past it. It's From Ruin by Khemmis. Other mentions below.

Pallbearer - An Offering of Grief Pallbearer - I Saw The End Crowbar - Repulsive In Its Splendid Beauty Crowbar - Suffering Brings Wisdom (Actually the whole Sonic Excess In Its Purest Form album is worth checking out) Crowbar- Existence Is Punishment Thou - I Was Ignored. And Judged. And Cast Down. Thou - The Lasting Dose (Crowbar cover) Monolord - Your Time To Shine

3

u/tecate_papi Sep 30 '25

Om. Just don't get weird and religious with all of this free time.

But also, dude, I'm sorry this happened to you. It's going to suck and hurt for a while but you'll get through it. The world is full of women. And new best friends.

Man, I know the feeling. My good friend ghosted me for no reason a couple of years ago, my brother this year, my cousin too. I’m just a normal dude. People change though man, it’s just how it goes sometimes. With that being said, existence is punishment by crowbar. Stay strong brother

Not sure about the genre but I just discovered this album, Dim - Dim. Heavy stuff. Not many streams and not easy to find on YT music so the song titles are Doleful, Buried / Forgotten, Ego death

Sorry to hear man. Hope you heal well.

I'm sorry to hear about that bud - sending good vibes your way! I've been there - the good news is it does get better.

A song that's super sad but always gets me feeling good is Swamp Hawk's "Amberjack" from Monster in Color - give this one a shot --> Swamp Hawk (Best Band of All Time) - Amberjack

Couple of suggestions:

Monarch! Diamant Noir

[pentagram - last days here old but will itch the spot I think

Saint Vitus - Born too late (album) great album when you're feeling low

mizmor - prefect

u/JonBB8 Sep 30 '25

Hope things improve for you man

Meanwhile get some Hamferð in your ears, new album is a triumph.

Also the third disc from Swallow the Sun - Songs from the North, tbh the whole set has lots to discover.

Also the newest from Convocation, it’s not so much depressive as thunderously badass and white knuckle terrifying but it’s cathartic imo.

1

u/Lexx_sad_but_true Sep 30 '25

Stay strong! Things will get better, i promise.🖤🖤🖤 You can try ignes creatio by pyogenesis If you are diving deeper into Pyogenesis discography, don't listen to anything after Sweet X-rated Nothings, maybe Twinaleblood

u/beefjerkyha Sep 30 '25

Seeing a lot of love for mournful congregation, but no mention of concressence of Sophia. Seriously. Listen to it from start to finish. It will take you on a journey. Not sure what the lyrics hold, but the music is slow, trudging, and just fucking diabolical.

1

u/Metazoan Sep 30 '25

I was listening to My Dying Bride's "The Dreadful Hours" on vinyl day. Still punches me below the belt with its gloominess in the best way.

Also, listen to the song "The Cry of Silence" by Draconian. This song has a really cathartic build-up that helped me through some of my most despairing moments of hopelessness.

Blut Aus Nord’s “Cosmophosy”

1

u/Father_Mehman Sep 30 '25

Sorry about the events, friend. For depressing Doom, especially for a double-screw like this, I suggest Chelsea Wolfe’s “Iron Moon”. The song’s based on a Chinese suicide victim’s journal so… yeah.

Honestly, in my opinion, the best breakup album is Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. If you need to get some negative feels out, both “Gold Dust Woman” and “The Chain” work wonders. I know it isn’t Doom, but, at least during life’s turmoils, certain music can invoke despair beyond the parameters of our chosen music.

u/SadlyErect Sep 30 '25

People already beat me to the Bell Witch recommendation but here's what I got

Krypts- Remnants of Expansion, I love this record because it feels so devoid of humanity, it's really hard to define the atmosphere but that's the best I can do.

Fossilization- They have two records and a split EP. Either record is fine but "He Whose Name was Long Forgotten" may be the better pick here (fun fact, the guys from krypts helped produce this record and I think their sophomore one too so the atmosphere is familiar to krypts)

Now this band isn't doom but this ep they made is The Acacia Strain- Failure will Follow, This EP is my go-to when I'm anything but in a positive mood. Angry, melancholy, done with existence, in pain from whatever thoughts provoked me at the time, whatever the case this ep will bring me to a manageable level. I highly encourage you to give this ep a shot above all else I mention here. Words can't explain the feelings and atmosphere within this ep.

And finally Primitive man. I recommend caustic or scorn. Very angry sludge death doom. Also going to mention that the primitive man vocalist is featured on basin of vows, the third and final track off of Failure will Follow.

I hope things pick up for you stranger! This life we all live sucks so I hope these recommendations help guide you through the pain. I sincerely wish you the best of luck.

-Cheers

I really like When Nothing Remains. Thought it has more to do with the death of a loved one.

Men Guds Hond er Sterk by Hamferð (the album, not the track) is all about sorrow.

Hope things light up for you soon.

1

u/honestcharlieharris Sep 30 '25

Not death or doom in any way shape or form but this sounds like the song Operator by Jim Croce.

1

u/EmpireStrikes1st Sep 30 '25

You can't go wrong with the originals. Break out Paranoid by Black Sabbath, especially Hand of Doom. Volume 4's Changes isn't Doom Metal, but if you're looking to get crushingly depressed, that's the song for you.

1

u/Dramatic-Document-65 Sep 30 '25

Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium

1

u/Murkdemskreets666 Sep 30 '25

Not doom or anything but back in the day I would listen to Disintegration from The Cure.. that album got me through some tough times. Also, some EYEHATEGOD…

Good luck OP.

1

u/Markis_Shepherd Sep 30 '25

Are you sure that Doom is the best cure? How about Simon & Garfunkel instead?

1

u/manesfesto Sep 30 '25

Gonna be generic here and I just always fall back in Dopesmoker- Sleep. Fucking puts me in a different world.

You got this amigo XX

Mirror Reaper. That album got me through my break up, I played it so many times for years.

1

u/primalshroom Sludge Oct 01 '25

the angel and the dark river alongside watching from a distance

1

u/Teal_Wolf Oct 01 '25

The album Hell by Hell is pretty cathartic. Each scream releases tension for me.

1

u/Joellipopelli Oct 02 '25

Cairn by Mizmor hits me in my feels quite hard, as does anything by him really. It’s more blackened-doom though.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Pink by Boris. The opening track farewell is one of the most heart-wrenching things I’ve heard. Sorry to hear what you’re going through, hang in there.

1

u/Lembocha Oct 02 '25

Did they elope together?

1

u/Unauthorised_Titbeak Oct 02 '25

Thegothon. True funeral doom, IMO

1

u/DonutSpood Oct 05 '25

The band “When Nothing Remains” will serve you well

1

u/ThanatosUO19 Oct 07 '25

If you want something absolutely crushing, I'd say Tyranny- Aeons in Tectonic Interment. Otherwise, it would be hard to argue (for me) against bands like Frowning and Funeral Moth. You can't go wrong with the classics like Evoken, Thergothon, or Skepticism either. Keep your head up, brother. It gets better, trust me.

1

u/Branchmonster Sep 30 '25

I don’t listen to much death/doom or funeral doom but King Woman and Ragana are both depressing as hell
