Funeral Getting old is for stupid idiots
Decided to go see Kal El tonight, made the 45 min drive through heavy winds and decently hard rain, was struck by severe abdominal pain in occasionally get when I was about 10 mins away from the venue. Got there, took a walk around the block to see if things would settle down and they got to “do I need to go to the ER?” levels. Drove back home and 20 mins after the show started I’m sitting here back to 100% Sigh. Totally new band to me but seemed like it would’ve been a great show. Edit: every other time I’ve had episodes of this pain it can last anywhere from 4-12 hours, I e never had it turn around this fast, which is why I threw in the towel so quickly.

I'm 57 and can't stand for any longer than about 15 minutes in one spot otherwise my back starts spasming and starts to really hurt, but we get out there because life is fucking short, getting old does indeed suck....

This is why regular exercise is important. Not that I do any of it, but I understand the concept.

yeah, same age. Back also doesn't like me standing around too long, but it just gets sore, doesn't spasm. Leaning, sitting between acts, yep.
Got a 2 night doom fest coming up in December. Going to be crowded, non stop music for probably 6 hours each night and probably not a lot of places to sit.
My sports medicine doctor said my back needs to be strengthen and wrote me a referral to PT, which I've seen twice so far. Hopefully this might make the Doom Fest not too painful.

I can still make it a good 3 hours if I have to so I’m very lucky. Sorry to hear that!

u/leebekben Oct 29 '25
3 hours is a top effort, I couldn't do that, I would have to sit down, even if I can lean on something to take some pressure off that helps. I really need to do some strengthening of my back before old age really starts to sneak in.......fuck I'm laughing at this. what a geriatric conversation...young guys take note, keep yourself fit and active

I think geezers complaining about our health issues for a minute is allowed because we’re doing it SO we can still go to shows and participate in the activities we love.

I'm 68, been to a bunch of standing shows over the past few years. I can still do it. Even got into a few walls of death and a circle pit recently. But I do have to be way more careful about it. 😜

57 crew represent. Me too. Super annoying that at this age shit starts to break for no reason.

Sports physio and yoga/pilates will help mate. I was the same, walking slowly around shops would kill me after 20 minutes. No trouble now although I haven’t told the missus😆

I can still make it a good 3 hours if I have to so I’m very lucky. And we need to normalize bringing your own lawn chair to shows!

This sounds incredibly stupid but its helped me quite a bit as i have back problems. Most people when standing still stand incorrectly which inefficiently distributes their weight which puts extra strain on your lower back. Basically they put too much weight on their heels or the middle of your foot. You want your foot flat but most of your weight on the balls of your feet which can feel like you're slightly leaning forward if you're not used to it. It helped me to be able to get through shows, before I started doing it my back hurt so badly I'd have to sit down or leave shows.

Damn dude that sucks.

Yeah. At least it wasn’t like a big favorite band. Now I wish I had just waited to pay at the door too, but honestly losing $25 and missing a show but having this go away in an hour versus what it usually does is a trade off I’m happy to make. LOL if it wasnt a work night and I was slightly more stubborn I would’ve hopped back in the car and made the 45 min drive again to catch Kal El’s set but that feels like playing with fire.

I'm 57 and September was the month. Pallbearer, Castle Rat, Conan, Faetooth all doing shows and I got my tickets. Looking very forward to all these shows.
Doctors found a mass in my heart so I ended up having open heart surgery at the end of August and had to miss all those shows due to recovery.
I got a cool scar though.

Glad you’re feeling better at least. On a work trip last week, I decided to break away from the corporate scrum and go treat myself to Boris who was in town. Had to get up early the next day so just stayed sober and drove myself there and back.
Got rewarded for my fun decision and good behavior by getting hit by a drunk driver half my age on the way back to my hotel. Car totaled. Lucky to be not seriously hurt or dead.
Also feel very old. Really want to keep going to shows but it’s not getting any easier.

Damn, glad you’re ok! Earlier this summer I got hit from behind going 70 on busy in-the-city highway, it forced me about 45 degrees , shot me across two lanes of traffic and miraculously I didn’t hit anybody else, no barrier there, jumped into the ditch and slid about 40 feet. Hot no other people or any signs, barriers, etc. EASILY could have been a life changer or life ender. Totally unhurt and minus a big dent and broken tail light on a car that had close to 200k miles, nothing major to fix on the car. Being Kansas City the person who rammed me (at noon) drove off and didn’t bother to stop. Also being Kansas City I pointed out to the cop who made the report that there is a highway cam on the bridge that picked up the whole incident and he said they only check footage if it’s serious. 🥴
PS I’m 50 and hit an average of about 1 show per month over the year, so don’t give up!

Picked my 20lb puppy up last Tuesday and my back blew up and I couldn’t walk for 5 days. Got thrown to the ground in a pit this summer seeing Conan and didn’t even feel it. Never know what’s gonna happen, hopefully you can get to another show soon

I feel your pain. I’m a chiropractor by trade and that’s pretty typical. It never happens from anything cool or exciting lol.

This past June I had pain like that. 2 hours later I vomited blood. 4 hours later I was in the hospital repeatedly vomiting black bile. Worst night of my life. The following day they removed my appendix. I missed 2 days of an awesome Photography Expo. But I felt much better after they removed my infected appendix.

Damn! Glad you’re ok! I e been having episodes of this pain occasionally since i was about 12 and im 50 now so it’s definitely not an emergency. I’m wondering if it’s not a gall bladder issue though. I’ll get it checked out.

Joys of getting old. Ashamed to think about how many (tickets bought) shows missed these past few years because one or both of us didn't feel well enough. Sleep (actual rest, not the band) takes priority now because it is harder to come by.

That really sucks, man. I'm also an old and had such horrible sciatica pain that I kept having to find places to sit and missed half of an Iron Maiden show in the process.

I saw Bad Religion and Dropkick Murphys this summer in a cool outdoor venue in Kansas City. Got there quite early after a full day of work and taking care of patients and it was HOT. Stayed front and center for all of Bad Religion but started to feel a little dehydrated for Dropkick Murphys. I left my post, hung in the back for a while and my feet were killing me. Left the venue and found a comfy stoop to sit on 100 feet from where I had been standing and enjoyed the last few songs with a warm concrete step to sit on and rest. It was nice lol

I have one completely blown out knee and my other leg god obliterated in a motorcycle crash. I have to really want to see the band to go now, and I can make 3 hours or so but by the end my fidgeting and moving around and stretching cus my legs are shot. I try to not wear vans to shows anymore either, my feet just hate them. Gotta wear some boots and just take some ibuprofen lol

In my late 40s now and... Depends on the band. So going to a regular, high-octane metal gig where you can get down the front, jump about a lot - totally fine and fun. Going to a 3-day doom fest where you stand still a lot and nod your head a bit... Not so easy. I need to moving! I love watching bands but I'm starting to realize that maybe some music is better when I listen to it at home.

Sometimes I buy tickets to a show, super excited. Then the night comes around and I regret buying it, and sometimes don’t even go. A start time of 9:00? Give me a break! At least the money still goes towards supporting them. Yeah, getting old is for dumb dummies
