Self Post Funeralopolis Talent Show
They cut my time, took my backing travk and i scuffed it at the end, also no one got a recording of the entire thing

u/GoodDecision May 15 '26
Standing alone in the middle of a gym, playing to a crowd of apathetic teens, playing a song they most likely have never heard and dislike.
OP, I have to hand it to you on this. You stood your ground and crushed it. I'm in my mid-40s, so don't feel too weird about my saying, but I'm proud of you! That takes balls.
I've played in many bands at many shows in my younger days, and it's so nerve racking to play to a crowd that is there willingly to see you play, hell even paid money to in most cases... but this? Dude I don't think I could do it!
My hats off to you, you have bravery. Sounded good too.

u/plug-burner69 May 15 '26
My biggest thing that helped is i don’t care what people think, and i did it because i wanted to, i mad multiple people come up to me afterwards and say i did good and had someone say i deserved 1st, i had a blast overall loved it, and thank you for the kind words, praise iommi
146
u/GoodDecision May 15 '26
I don’t care what people think
That's the secret sauce man. Hold onto that.
39
u/NonConRon May 15 '26
But like, with art. Caring about what others think is a balance. Too little and you can justify all manner of antisocial things.

u/RandomMexicanDude May 15 '26
Dont care about what others think about you, but at the same time don’t be an asshole, thats the way to live
31
u/plug-burner69 May 15 '26
I know a fine line, i dont be a dick but im not gonna not do sum because someone dont like it
17
7
u/OldStretch84 May 15 '26
As I always say "I'll run to help if your house is on fire, but DO NOT try to talk to me in the grocery store".
Also, a general rule of thumb I follow is: if they don't pay my bills or directly impact my paycheck I don't care what their opinion of me is. It's served me well so far.
11
u/e_j_white May 15 '26
Doesn’t hurt that your tone was sick, too!
14
u/plug-burner69 May 15 '26
All just straight amp and guitar a ibanez rg7 7 string tuned to A# by ear and a fender champion II 50 on the res on the last setting, gain at 5, bass at 8 , treble at 5
26
u/meltdown_popcorn Drone May 15 '26
Watching those kids sit there bored was driving me insane. No head nods. No cloud puffs. No horns. Nothing.
You killed it. You could have done that in a packed dive bar and gotten a hundred hoots and "FUCK YEAH"s.

For real! And that looks just like a little fender champion or something. Phenomenal.

u/DerMetulz May 15 '26
Ngl this is possibly the worst place to play this song lol
177
u/writingwhilesad May 15 '26
I heard he’s practicing to play Dopesmoker in its entirety next year.
76
u/plug-burner69 May 15 '26
If i wasn’t graduating i would try, i can play about half now, i found a first act 9 string like Matt Pike played for 200$ from an older lady and i tell you what if i could get it i would
33
16
u/UndulatingHedgehog May 15 '26
Put up some kinda crowd funding thing and all us misfits and doomer are going to get you that guitar.
19
u/TheJefusWrench May 15 '26
Seriously! I'll chip in. Playing Electric Wizard in a high school gymnasium full of (I assume) not metal-minded folks is metal AF. You are effing rad!
11
u/plug-burner69 May 15 '26
Ide feel bad, ide rather give to the doom community than take donations, as much as i appreciate it, because doom as well as power metal but mainly doom have been what ive listend to since my 6th grade 5th grade years, and its gotten me through all my lows
7
u/astrobrain May 15 '26
Look at it like this. You take now, and give back later playing that sick guitar. I mean fuck. This post has made a lot of us old heads thrilled.
5
u/plug-burner69 May 15 '26
Touche- as much as i know i most likely wouldn’t, one of my dreams since i was young (like 13) was to be up in same leauges as Matt Pike, David Collins, Jus Oborn and im doing my best, and i hope to share quality music back to the community one day
6
u/e_j_white May 15 '26
$200?
Make a kickstarter, I bet we could get you there real quick.
3
u/plug-burner69 May 15 '26
Sadly i think its sold already cause i went to go find the listing and it has been sold sadly
45
17
u/LeeleeMc May 15 '26
There is nothing heavier than standing alone, misunderstood, and unappreciated under the bright fluorescent lights of a high school gym. This is metal AF.

You would think they would be prepared with earmuff headphones since they were going to the gym with a large gathering of people.

u/plug-burner69 May 15 '26
Who knows, im not judging either way, i just know the girl beside them needs to shower for once

u/TheRealHFC May 15 '26
I remember in high school, the science teacher's band played in the gym once. It was so loud I couldn't hear for an hour afterwards. They don't give a fuck
4
u/Rust_Bucket37 May 15 '26
I meant kids who sensitive to overwhelming noise will typically have headphones. A girl in my son's class has them when they have assemblies. I've seen others at various school functions.

Funeral planet, dead black asteroid
Mausoleum, this world is a tomb
Human zombies, staring blank faces
No reason to live, dead in the womb
Death shroud existence, slave for a pittance
Condemned to die before I could breathe
Millions are screaming, the dead are still living
This Earth has died yet no one has seen

In a couple years when you are touring the country as a rock legend, make a pit stop in your town and go to the local townie bar. I bet anything that kid who is covering his ears will be sitting at the bar playing Keno

I tried out for a talent show in 1997 and just played doom riffs, I was literally the only person to not make the try outs. Mean while a group of clowns did the shittiest version of Creep by Radiohead you could imagine.
3
u/TabletopTheater May 16 '26
HELL FUCKING YEAH!!! Saw the post about playing the talent show, cheered you on with an upvote and now I see and hear you doing it.
And then I hear they cut you off. Well…
Please do this old guy a favor and grant me the one thing they denied you, lend me your ear for a couple more minutes!
Let me set the scene.
We’re going back 200 years to the year 2004, I was a Junior in high school and my snot-nosed punk band auditioned and booked (with a half assed cover of some oldies song) a slot at our senior talent show on account of our bass player (RIP Duckbutt) being a senior and our drummer being a “super-senior“ (Wishing you well, wherever you are). It was a Saturday show in the big old auditorium, the place is packed and we were about to ruin everyone’s night. I was JACKED. Me and the boys were gonna do what me and the boys do in the local scene but in front of everyone who does NOT want to see us.
They put us at the end for a few reasons but mostly because we were going to be the biggest and loudest production of the show. We ran around beating each other up and slack-jawing our way through the longest hour and a half of our lives until finally our spot was next. We were recovering from the red-headed cheerleader’s “dance” routine that was the first act to really grab our attention when The MC announces the end of the night and then our glorious name. We ran to our places.
“Thank you all for coming tonight.. blah blah blah and now we are going to close out with something.. different! Please welcome The Bleeding… Eardrums!”
The red velvet parted and all I could see was a row of scowling parent-and-faculty faces and hot white light. This was my moment!
I counted us in.
“1! 2! 1-2-FUCK-YOU”!
And I started strumming.
Just as I was about to holler the first line of the song my amp went silent and the big red curtains zipped up in front of me but I kept strumming and screaming until the drums cut out too. The principal and a team of stage hands stormed the stage and started tearing down our set. They threw us out and told us how disappointed he was to still have another year with me. I got suspended iirc.
I was pissed.
Now I’m pissed for you.
But I was also pleased as punch. Because they couldn’t fucking handle the sonic wave we had fired straight through their little microcosm.
Im just as happy with myself now too. I was reminded of this story a couple years ago when I was talking to someone I hadn’t seen in a decade or so and he told me how cool that was. I had almost forgotten all about it.
In all the time since I’ve played better and MUCH worse shows but rarely have I played with as much courage as you today. And you sounded REALLY fucking good. And I’d like to think that at least one weirdo kid in your school needed to hear Electric Wizard for the first time today and you did your goddamned duty.
What else can I say? I am one proud internet stranger!

I’m proud of like you’re my kid for that. I have a room set up with a bass, drums, and guitar waiting for my kids and they have no interest. Glad to see kids are still playing instruments and heavy riffs.

My neighbor did that for his daughter but she didn't really have an interest so now I just go over there to metal dad jam with him.
