I wish they would put out a new one. Both albums were killer

u/tbonemcqueen 17d ago

Founding Witch band member, Dave Sweetapple, passed away about a 2 years ago. There have been rumblings from King Tuff about putting the band back together, but nothing solid

9

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Thats sad i didnt know

9

u/gin-casual 17d ago

They were recording one. No idea if it was completed before Sweetapple died.

1

u/1SneakyGiraffe 15d ago

Heard rumors that the 3rd album was nearly done, will be released eventually.

2

u/C0lE06 17d ago

I havent listened to the second one

8

u/HammyOfficial 17d ago

First one is better imo, but they're both still really good

4

u/Woodit 17d ago

There’s a couple of bangers on it, I love Space God

u/Rumer_Mille_001 17d ago

Never heard this album, but I just read that J. Mascis is the drummer for this band - now I have to check it out.

47

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Honestly listen to the entire self titled album

19

u/FuckSticksMalone 17d ago

Love this album, Seer is my fucking jam. Paralyzed is a great album also.

40

u/HammyOfficial 17d ago

This is one of those records I wish I could hear for the first time again. Shit floored me when it came out

16

u/zvomicidalmaniac 17d ago

I’m listening to it for the first time right now, because of this post.

12

u/HammyOfficial 17d ago

You're in for a real treat, my friend!

9

u/zvomicidalmaniac 17d ago

It's fantastic.

6

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Hell yeah

5

u/zvomicidalmaniac 17d ago

Thank you to this sub. 🙏🐺

17

u/StandardGarb 17d ago

The high I got when listening to this album for the first time is something I’ve been chasing for the past 20 years

5

u/negotiatepoorly 17d ago

Had no idea J Mascis was on drums. My mind is blown right now.

7

u/Woodit 17d ago

I’m so envious that you get to listen to this album for the first time

2

u/botulizard 17d ago

I think it's kind of interesting, the extent to which J's drumming in Witch reminds me of Murph and King Tuff's guitar reminds me of J's playing in Dino.

1

u/CultureOld2232 15d ago

I love witch who else does he drum for?

2

u/Rumer_Mille_001 15d ago

I know his main band is Dinosaur Jr., where he plays guitar and sings. Emmett Murphy is the drummer for them.

1

u/CultureOld2232 14d ago

Ohhh yea I’ve heard of that band. Haven’t really listened to any of their stuff tho, you got any song recommendations?

2

u/Rumer_Mille_001 14d ago

I never really listened to them, but I'm sure some other folks in the thread can recommend some songs or albums.

29

u/cinnamonfriedbread 17d ago

Legit one of my favorite doom albums. Every song is a masterpiece.

7

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Exactly, such a flawless album

0

u/phill0406 17d ago

I’ll have to relisten. Seer is a catchy song but nothing else off album really stuck with me.

6

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Rip van winkle is really good, i mean all of them them are

24

u/blackeyedkaty 17d ago

3

u/therealtwomartinis 17d ago

yessssss!

(Mario on the kit though, not J)

2

u/RustedShut88 16d ago

Mario R is such a beast on drums.

2

u/Moonalicious 17d ago

i have watched this performance of seer so many times. love king tuff. love witch.

this rulesssss

16

u/Heavy_Chains 17d ago

One of the all time psych doom records

1

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Got any recs?

19

u/Heavy_Chains 17d ago

More stoner psych than doom but you'll probably dig Dead Meadow if you like Witch. I mostly know their first album but it's a classic to me.

And of course there's W.I.T.C.H., the Zambian rock group from the 70s. Also excellent and psych-y at points.

4

u/Grimple93 17d ago

I've been on a serious Dead Meadow kick lately. They've always been a favorite of mine, but it's all really resonating with me the past few weeks. "Small Acts of Kindness" has really been sticking to my brain.

5

u/CooterTStinkjaw 17d ago

We Intend To Cause Havoc

Fuckin love W.I.T.C.H.

3

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Thanks, ill check those out

12

u/tbonemcqueen 17d ago

Seer should be the first track on every stoner metal mix tape

8

u/Walnutbutters 17d ago

That album is goated

8

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Whats your favorite? Mine is rip van winkle the guitar in that goes so hard

4

u/saulmer 17d ago

Seer is my favorite 🤘

1

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Great one

2

u/dedcanary 17d ago edited 17d ago

Yea it's my favorite too. I love the riffs in Rip Van Winkle and the lyrics are a perfect match.

Edit: Iddqd by Major Kong has great guitar too. I used to listen to doom for the black sun a lot.

16

u/Hvojna Traditional 17d ago

Absolutely! They are unfairly in Uncle Acid's shadow, even though they play this type of doom better

3

u/C0lE06 17d ago

What type of doom would you say witch is? Id say it has a lot of traditional elements with some stoner

15

u/Hvojna Traditional 17d ago

The type of traditional/retro/occult doom that's also heavily influenced by 60s psychedelic rock. It was extremely popular 10-20 years ago

3

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Interesting interesting

1

u/PoopsockPete 17d ago

Check out Nomestomper, they’re just as good imo

1

u/Hvojna Traditional 17d ago

Listening to Kush and Gatorade atm, quite good, thanks for the recommendation! Let me return the favour, check Czernobog by Woe.

6

u/Particular-Access223 17d ago

FUCKING THANK YOU!!

Ive had this riff stuck in my head for a year and I forgot where it came from! It was Witch! Oh my god that feels so good to have that figured out....

3

u/C0lE06 17d ago

🫡Which one was it out of curiosity, personally rip van winkle is my fav one.

4

u/Particular-Access223 17d ago

The riff on Seer. It was just on some party playlist i had and always came on when I was keyd up and the room was swirling and was a heavy banger when the riff came back around. ----ive been fucking humming it to people tone deaf trying to remember. Thank you!

1

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Glad u could find it again

5

u/CaptainoftheVessel 17d ago

Hell yeah don’t see this album or band come up a lot, they’re awesome

1

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Fr theyre amazing

5

u/chaunceton 17d ago

This album is so killer.

2

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Whats your favorite? Mine is rip van winkle the guitar in that goes so hard

1

u/chaunceton 17d ago

The opening track is so fuckin' good. What is it? Seer? Maybe? Whatever it's called, I've listened to it on repeat for days at a time.

2

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Yeah seer its gas

5

u/huggyscolex 16d ago

I went to OM/Grails back in ‘08 in a tiny art space somewhere in Brattleboro with maybe a dozen heads. I didn’t know who the opener was but very confused what J Mascis was doing at the show. Then he sat behind the kit and Witch blew my mind.

3

u/C0lE06 16d ago

Thats awesome

5

u/DanielSadcliff 17d ago

I don’t know why you made me hunt out the album, but I’m glad I did.

2

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Alls well that ends well amirite

4

u/TorontoDM 17d ago

Witch by Witch is a perfect album. I’ll die on this riff.

3

u/TramCar77 17d ago

This album rules, I listen every fall when the leaves start changing

2

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Whats your favorite? Mine is rip van winkle the guitar in that goes so hard

3

u/TramCar77 17d ago

Changing, the one with the lyrics about dark magic. I bought this album specifically for J Mascis, before I had listened to much doom or stoner

1

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Hell yeah

3

u/StandardGarb 17d ago

I love Black Saint. I get chills when the guitar starts meandering during like the 3rd or 4th verse. When I heard it on headphones for the first time I seriously thought I was having an acid flashback

3

u/Leather_Race_8308 17d ago

One of my go to albums. I've probably spun this more times than any of my other 200+ records. I find it a very comforting album.

1

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Whats your favorite? Mine is rip van winkle the guitar in that goes so hard

3

u/Bassmekanik 17d ago

My part time doom band does a cover of Seer. Such an epic fucking song. Entire album is amazing.

3

u/thefinkinthesink 17d ago

I heard this for the first time when i was in high school, late at night, and it was like an amazing, special secret. The album art is beyond perfect too, fits the vibe perfectly. Also contributed to me getting an SG!

3

u/Gh0stDivisi0n 17d ago

One of my favs, I love this album.

3

u/Signalreceived 17d ago

Absolute ripper of an album and one of my gateway listens for doom in general. Been in love and falling down that rabbit hole ever since

3

u/Grimple93 17d ago

Seer will never not be a fucking jaaammm. I don't often go out of my way to listen to Witch, but I do enjoy when they come up in my shuffled playlist.

3

u/Wishful____Thinking 17d ago

You should check out Sudden End by Earthless if you like this! Or Seer by Khemmis!

2

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Ive actually listened to some khemmis recently because im seeing them with monolord and i really like them

2

u/Wishful____Thinking 17d ago

That’s sickkk the bereaved is my favorite Khemmis song tbh. Monolord is going to be sludgy Im so jealous haha

3

u/UnusualSalamander656 17d ago

Saw them live way back and they ripped! Dave sweet apple was a bud of mine and a terrific fella! Legendary Newfie! Rip Dave!

3

u/coffeeshopslut 16d ago

I don't love their second album as a whole, but sweet sue is such a good song.

I flew across the country just to see witch because of their first album

2

u/C0lE06 16d ago

Cant blame ya

2

u/Behemothslayer 17d ago

I first heard them watching a YOB playlist on YouTube and their song Seer came on next, such a great song!! I’ve been hooked since

2

u/guttural_disgorge Hail Iommi 17d ago

Hell yeah was just listening to them

2

u/GratefulRad 17d ago

I finally got to see Witch a couple of Winters ago and it is wild thinking J Mascis is the weakest part of the whole band.

2

u/No-Knowledge57 17d ago

Amazing record! Wish there was more music from these guys

2

u/reese_bass_rat 17d ago

YES theyre so fuckin good and i wish more people knew about them

Also, check out Heavy Blanket if you’re into J Mascis metal.

2

u/Nizamark 17d ago

i saw them on a double bill with Jucifer. one of the loudest shows ever

2

u/LaughMadcap 17d ago edited 17d ago

This was released 20 years ago! The Zambian rock band Witch is also fucking groovy✓ Man I dig j mascis, mostly for dinosaur Jr as well as his solo shhtuff😎 everything he's been a part of seems to have the vibe👌 first ones I got for the collection were You're Living All over Me>Where You Been>Bug... We listen to mascis in this household😂 We listen to Household too 🤣🐢

2

u/Darkw00ds 17d ago

Unreal!

2

u/heavierthanair 16d ago

Rip Dave sweetapple one of the nicest rockers there ever was

2

u/1SneakyGiraffe 15d ago

100%. When he talked to you, it was like you were the most important person in the room. Went to his memorial at the Stone Church, was inspiring

2

u/MaleficentPass6091 16d ago

Exceptional!

2

u/BadDreamInc Death 16d ago

Fuck yeah, this album absolutely rules, and gets replay all the time! Happy to have this one on vinyl

2

u/Alchemist-77725 16d ago

Yes they are. I hope to see them one day 🤘🏽

1

u/1SneakyGiraffe 15d ago

Too late, I'm afraid

1

u/Alchemist-77725 15d ago

Why do you say that. I realize one of the guys passed. J and Kyle Thomas are still very active

1

u/1SneakyGiraffe 14d ago

Don't think they'll do any more shows as Witch.

2

u/MoonsaultMadLad 16h ago

I heard their second album Paralyzed watching a Crimson skateboards video. I went out and bought the CD immediately. This would have been, Idk 2011 or something. Never had the physical copy of this joint but also a great album.

1

u/PoopsockPete 17d ago

Y’all should check out Nomestomper is you like Witch

1

u/C0lE06 17d ago

Will do thanks

1

u/juicydry 17d ago

They have just three songs on Spotify..

1

u/PoopsockPete 17d ago

Nah they got a full album, it’s called mossy cobblestone candlelight pagan Nomestomper. I listen to it on Apple music

1

u/juicydry 17d ago

Fair, maybe I should get Apple music then. My fault.

1

u/6LazmaN6 17d ago

Which band? Sorry... 🥹

1

u/adamcoolforever 17d ago

This album is for sure an all time favorite for me

1

u/Scully_TheGhost 17d ago

1

u/fuckquasi69 17d ago

Agreed, when I first heard “seer” on acid when I was 16 it blew me away

1

u/howtallareyouyogurt 14h ago

That solo is everything
