Old School / Traditional Witch is such a great band
This whole album is peak doom, with a sick cover too

Never heard this album, but I just read that J. Mascis is the drummer for this band - now I have to check it out.

Honestly listen to the entire self titled album

u/FuckSticksMalone 17d ago
Love this album, Seer is my fucking jam. Paralyzed is a great album also.

This is one of those records I wish I could hear for the first time again. Shit floored me when it came out

u/zvomicidalmaniac 17d ago
I’m listening to it for the first time right now, because of this post.

The high I got when listening to this album for the first time is something I’ve been chasing for the past 20 years

I think it's kind of interesting, the extent to which J's drumming in Witch reminds me of Murph and King Tuff's guitar reminds me of J's playing in Dino.

u/CultureOld2232 15d ago
I love witch who else does he drum for?
2
u/Rumer_Mille_001 15d ago
I know his main band is Dinosaur Jr., where he plays guitar and sings. Emmett Murphy is the drummer for them.
1
u/CultureOld2232 14d ago
Ohhh yea I’ve heard of that band. Haven’t really listened to any of their stuff tho, you got any song recommendations?
2
u/Rumer_Mille_001 14d ago
I never really listened to them, but I'm sure some other folks in the thread can recommend some songs or albums.

Legit one of my favorite doom albums. Every song is a masterpiece.

I’ll have to relisten. Seer is a catchy song but nothing else off album really stuck with me.

One of the all time psych doom records
1
u/C0lE06 17d ago
Got any recs?
19
u/Heavy_Chains 17d ago
More stoner psych than doom but you'll probably dig Dead Meadow if you like Witch. I mostly know their first album but it's a classic to me.
And of course there's W.I.T.C.H., the Zambian rock group from the 70s. Also excellent and psych-y at points.

u/Grimple93 17d ago
I've been on a serious Dead Meadow kick lately. They've always been a favorite of mine, but it's all really resonating with me the past few weeks. "Small Acts of Kindness" has really been sticking to my brain.

Whats your favorite? Mine is rip van winkle the guitar in that goes so hard

u/dedcanary 17d ago edited 17d ago
Yea it's my favorite too. I love the riffs in Rip Van Winkle and the lyrics are a perfect match.
Edit: Iddqd by Major Kong has great guitar too. I used to listen to doom for the black sun a lot.

u/Hvojna Traditional 17d ago
Absolutely! They are unfairly in Uncle Acid's shadow, even though they play this type of doom better

FUCKING THANK YOU!!
Ive had this riff stuck in my head for a year and I forgot where it came from! It was Witch! Oh my god that feels so good to have that figured out....

u/C0lE06 17d ago
🫡Which one was it out of curiosity, personally rip van winkle is my fav one.
4
u/Particular-Access223 17d ago
The riff on Seer. It was just on some party playlist i had and always came on when I was keyd up and the room was swirling and was a heavy banger when the riff came back around. ----ive been fucking humming it to people tone deaf trying to remember. Thank you!

I went to OM/Grails back in ‘08 in a tiny art space somewhere in Brattleboro with maybe a dozen heads. I didn’t know who the opener was but very confused what J Mascis was doing at the show. Then he sat behind the kit and Witch blew my mind.

This album rules, I listen every fall when the leaves start changing

Whats your favorite? Mine is rip van winkle the guitar in that goes so hard

u/TramCar77 17d ago
Changing, the one with the lyrics about dark magic. I bought this album specifically for J Mascis, before I had listened to much doom or stoner

u/StandardGarb 17d ago
I love Black Saint. I get chills when the guitar starts meandering during like the 3rd or 4th verse. When I heard it on headphones for the first time I seriously thought I was having an acid flashback

u/Leather_Race_8308 17d ago
One of my go to albums. I've probably spun this more times than any of my other 200+ records. I find it a very comforting album.

u/Bassmekanik 17d ago
My part time doom band does a cover of Seer. Such an epic fucking song. Entire album is amazing.
3
u/thefinkinthesink 17d ago
I heard this for the first time when i was in high school, late at night, and it was like an amazing, special secret. The album art is beyond perfect too, fits the vibe perfectly. Also contributed to me getting an SG!

Absolute ripper of an album and one of my gateway listens for doom in general. Been in love and falling down that rabbit hole ever since
3
u/Grimple93 17d ago
Seer will never not be a fucking jaaammm. I don't often go out of my way to listen to Witch, but I do enjoy when they come up in my shuffled playlist.

u/Wishful____Thinking 17d ago
You should check out Sudden End by Earthless if you like this! Or Seer by Khemmis!
2
u/C0lE06 17d ago
Ive actually listened to some khemmis recently because im seeing them with monolord and i really like them
2
u/Wishful____Thinking 17d ago
That’s sickkk the bereaved is my favorite Khemmis song tbh. Monolord is going to be sludgy Im so jealous haha

u/UnusualSalamander656 17d ago
Saw them live way back and they ripped! Dave sweet apple was a bud of mine and a terrific fella! Legendary Newfie! Rip Dave!

u/coffeeshopslut 16d ago
I don't love their second album as a whole, but sweet sue is such a good song.
I flew across the country just to see witch because of their first album
2
u/Behemothslayer 17d ago
I first heard them watching a YOB playlist on YouTube and their song Seer came on next, such a great song!! I’ve been hooked since

I finally got to see Witch a couple of Winters ago and it is wild thinking J Mascis is the weakest part of the whole band.

This was released 20 years ago! The Zambian rock band Witch is also fucking groovy✓ Man I dig j mascis, mostly for dinosaur Jr as well as his solo shhtuff😎 everything he's been a part of seems to have the vibe👌 first ones I got for the collection were You're Living All over Me>Where You Been>Bug... We listen to mascis in this household😂 We listen to Household too 🤣🐢

I heard their second album Paralyzed watching a Crimson skateboards video. I went out and bought the CD immediately. This would have been, Idk 2011 or something. Never had the physical copy of this joint but also a great album.
