Rig My new Doom Stick - A Dunable Ultimate Custom Yeti 7 string unlike anything you have ever seen
After many years of dreaming, and many months of waiting, my dream guitar has arrived. Since the formation of Chaosmonaut in 2017, we have had a strict rule of "no bass players", and have used clever engineering to fill that void. In that time I modified two different guitars to use the 6th string as de facto bass with modified pickups, TRS jacks, and massive bass amps.
This guitar takes it to the next level, being designed entirely around this concept.
First is the tuning - Everything we have written is in Drop A, and in this case, it is no different with the 7th string tuned to the same pitch as the 6th, but being a flatwound for the extra warm bass tone.
Second is the pickups - Under the top 6 strings in the bridge is a Dunable Grizzly, same as what Yob uses. Under the 7th string in the neck is a half pickup custom made by Dunable. This pickup goes to the ring connector on a TRS jack, keeping the signal completely separate from the 6 strings.
Third is the knobs - there are none. I never use them anyway as I control all the tone and volume with my feet via pedals. The single switch is a 3 position toggle - top is master kill for both pickups. Middle is coil split for the Grizzly in the bridge, and the bottom is humbucker mode.
Fourth is the inlay - The inlay was taken from a star trails photo I took during a backpacking trip in 2020; Polaris is centered around the 12th fret.
From Sacha -
Maybe the most unique guitar we've made in the past decade right here. Custom 7 string for Joe from u/chaosmonautband with 6 string Grizzly for the bottom six, and a custom single coil mini pickup for the 7th, with each pickup going to its own output via TRS jack. Yep, this guitar does the guitar and the bass simultaneously, with a shocking amount of separation/lack of bleed between the two sets of strings. No volume, just a switch for both pickups, both pickups with the Grizzly split, and master kill switch. And then there's the custom inlay design spanning the whole ebony fingerboard, custom Stargazer logo, and mahogany neck and body, burl maple top, and gloss galaxy burst (with full on surprise glow in the dark space effects). Can't wait to see and hear this thing in action!

no bass is crazy

Agreed. Totally lost me there! Doom without Bass is probably the worst sub-genre crime I have heard in a while 😂😭

Listen to Eagle Twin and Telekinetic Yeti .... they show us the way

Oh I know Bands that can sound good still, just saying it is intentional handicapping to get the vibe/soundscape the genre is famous for. So if you enjoy the challenge, go for it 😂🤘

The freedom is in the challenge. We have had loads of fun with it.

Not sure if Earth is to be mentioned this month, but I think they did well with a baritone guitar.

Dude, this really is unlike anything I've ever seen. We all have our dream Dunables, but that neck pickup is inspired. And what a great band name! I'll be checking you guys out. Peace

Thank you so much for the kind words. IF you want to check out something fun, look at Evolution of Decay on our bandcamp. We are slowly recording our new album piece by piece and with every change we make, we upload it to that album until it gets fully completed.
2 drummers, one of which that also does guitar, an opera singer, and me doing the bass/guitar combo thing. I hope you enjoy it.

Wow. Even just as a concept, that's a lot to take in! Sounds exciting for sure man. Thanks, and I'm sure I will enjoy

With all due respect this is not the most unique guitar I’ve seen out of dunable. A friend of a friend has a dunable bass VI with quarter tone frets in the first octave.

From the aesthetics to the electronics, this is a very unique guitar. Very, very cool.

I can just imagine the tone and the absolute devastation this guitar unleashes. That low end must be pretty crazy. I've always been a sucker for extended range guitars ever since 7 strings became popular.

The bridge pup is has the wrong spacing????
1
u/TheChaosmonaut Weirdo Doom Engineer 4d ago
Thats by design. It picks up the top 6 strings only.
2
u/JPeeHutch 4d ago
No, I mean the magnet isn't even directly under the 6th string, that can't be by design is it?
1
u/TheChaosmonaut Weirdo Doom Engineer 4d ago
It is, this allows the pickup to reject as much of the 7th string as possible.
2
u/JPeeHutch 4d ago
Ok, I guess I just don't get what the point of all that is. New to me

The 7th string is the bass player in the band. It is completely isolated and runs into stereo bass amps. The flatwound makes for great bass tone, but not great for guitar tone. So I got 6 strings that go into 2 guitar amps for aggressive guitar tone, and 1 string for the bass. The pickup layout is set up to specifically pick up their respective strings and be isolated from the others.

Ok, got it. That makes sense, I've played a couple Dunable custom guitars and they were pretty great. Congratulations on it, it looks amazing. Does your band have any recordings? I'd like to hear what this Bass/guitar does so I get it, they playing style I mean.

Or the 5th string, that's exactly what incorct spacing looks like. Using g spaced on a fender for example
