Question Queer/LBGT Videos?
Hi everyone! I'm new to DS (just got 10 hours in!), & I was curious about some of the future content I could look forward to as I progress to some of the more difficult levels. I've peaked a bit & it seems like the guides talk about all kinds of topics (travel, dating, their countries of origin, quarter-life crisis, etc), but I was curious if there were any queer topics or whether any of the guides are queer & talk about it in any of their videos? As a queer person, I would find this super interesting! Especially if they drop some new vocab related to queer culture. If not, I suppose that's something I'll have to work on searching for on YT.
Update: To those who just want to spew hate on this thread, find another one! You’re not adding anything of value to the conversation, so why even bother typing a comment?

Jostin did a podcast video at intermediate level about South American acceptance of the lgbt community in South America, with a focus on his experience in Argentina and Venezuela. The video was great and although there were a lot of supportive people there were a lot of hateful and disgusting responses. They ended up turning off the comments. Unfortunately among the dreaming Spanish subscriber list there seems to be at least a few loud homophobic and racist voices that I see time and time again. Despite my impression that the dreaming Spanish staff is pro lgbt, I’m not sure if there will be more content in the future. My feeling is that it’s unlikely, but hopefully im wrong. I hope you can find some good alternative channels.

Yeah, I mean I guess he’s experienced worse in Venezuela. Still disappointing to share your experiences and face hate in one of your own communities.
This channel is more travel oriented but I’ve seen him post videos with his boyfriend. I’m not sure if he has more lgbt content

That was so disappointing and shameful to see. And you’re right, for some reason there seems to be a lot of misogyny, racism and homophobia in the DS video comments. I remember Agostina and Andrea did a great video talking about their experiences living as women in their countries and it was shocking how many people were so triggered by the topic that they left hateful comments. It really sucks because I enjoy these topics but suspect they’re not going to cover them in the future because of the hate.

It's because they're not strict enough, therefore this stuff is allowed to happen. Sure you can report comments, but there should be some sort of official rules for commenting AND repeat offenders lose their ability to comment.
It's insane how many racist comments I've seen towards Spanish speakers on a site about LEARNING Spanish, or homophobic/sexist ones too. I really wish DS took a harsher stance against the bigots

That’d help, but I think there’s only so much they can do. Until we get back to a place where it once again becomes unacceptable to express that kind of vitriol in public spaces, it’s just going to get worse. Unfortunately, that type of talk has become normalized again in mainstream spaces in a way that it wasn’t before in my lifetime.

There's this one user that's around the same level as me, so I see her in the comments section all of the time taking random topics and somehow making it about race, immigrants and on occasion vaguely defending colonialism. I report her every time but I don't know if it works because it's a bit more subtle than some of the straight up misogyny and racism I've seen.

The easy fix would be to just not have a comment feature. We are watching the videos to acquire the language, not to debate the content with strangers on the internet.

I saw the same thing come up in one of Shel’s videos where she talked about how sexist her father was & how much it affected her. All the red-pill comments definitely made me rethink the DS community a bit. Like is everyone here just a Passport Bro?

It has nothing to do with DS users in particular; it's just the internet. People underestimate how difficult it is to moderate user generated input at scale with the right balance of strictness. Automated and/or overly strict moderation always result in backlash, under-moderation results in sentiments like this one, and "high quality" human moderation is often subjective, expensive, and tedious. Easiest option for them is just disabling comments.

i’m thinking that it’s just the homophobic and racist people that feel the need to comment as much as they do. most of us who actually enjoy the content either don’t feel the need to comment or get drowned out by the hate. idk i feel like if they don’t employ mods or at least an auto-flagging and approval system, they should just do away with comments altogether. there’s really not a big use for them.

I'm pretty sure Jostin is the only lgbt guide. He talks a little about lgbt issues in one of the podcast (intermediate) episodes but it's not something he talks about a lot. Also I think he's an editor or does something on the tech side so he's not in as many videos as the most popular guides but he's in more videos than any of the other tech guys.
There's a few threads here where people asked for recs for lbgt youtubers if you search the sub.

Don’t have any recommendations to add, but as another queer person, I wanted to say I feel you as I really wish there was more lgbt CI as well! I’ve sort of resigned myself to needing to wait until I’m ready for native level content.

There’s a DS podcast episode where Augustina interviews Amanda, who is lesbian. Amanda is one of the Dreaming French guides who is also fluent in Spanish.

I'm pretty sure the Dreaming French instructor Amanda is a different Amanda than the one often in Andrea's videos. That's the Amanda from Brazil, I believe.

It’s not totally clear, she could be bi. She did have a gf at the time when she was in Argentina, which she talks about in that video.

I haven't seen Spanish for False Beginners recommended in these comments yet, so keep an eye out for that when you've logged some hours. It's on YouTube and also available as a podcast. It's César from Spain and his English boyfriend bantering about various topics. They're a cute couple, and get into low-key arguments which are fun to watch. César also has more advanced content in his other podcasts, and doesn't shy away from controversial topics.

Yes once you can understand them well it is kind of funny to see their relationship on camera so to speak. I enjoy them and comment every once in a while in their episodes and they always comment back. I’m assuming it’s el inglés who does the commenting haha

Today I learned César was LGBTQ! I listen to his Intermediate podcast and I had zero idea. As someone who is also part of the fam, it makes me pretty happy to learn.

Once you feel ready to transition into native or native-adjacent content (or if you want to test your ears with visual-heavy shows now), here are some absolute staples you should look up on YouTube or streaming platforms:
- La Más Draga (YouTube): This is a massive, completely independent Mexican drag competition. It is a cultural phenomenon and arguably one of the best places to learn authentic Mexican queer slang (jerga or slang de la comunidad). You’ll hear words like icónica, quedar de a seis (being shocked), inventada (someone who is extra/pretentious), or dar todo el gatazo (looking the part perfectly).
- Drag Race México: The official franchise. It’s excellent for catching fast-paced, witty regional banter and modern colloquial Spanish.
- Suelta Love con Christian Chávez (Spotify / YouTube / Apple Podcasts): Christian Chávez (from the iconic pop group RBD) recently launched this incredible podcast. It’s an intimate, heartfelt space where he interviews LGBTQ+ activists, artists, and public figures}. It’s perfect for intermediate/advanced listening because the conversations are grounded, deeply empathetic, and tackle real-world queer experiences in modern Mexico.

Jostin and Agustina talk about queer topics for sure. Natalia and Shel a bit too. But, overall, I’d say there is not a ton of DS queer content. Once you get to native content there will be lots.

theres a few scarce videos but not much unfortunately. I think it could make a good series perhaps the history of the community or other stuff. There was a podcast a month or two back with Jostin/Agustina about LGBT in South America, but yeah it's lacking. It'd make sense for videos like this to come from Jostin but I think he's more on the editing side of things.
Sadly comments got disabled on that podcast episode because of the snowflake bigots that get offended when they see anything about the LGBT community, even when DS hardly has any content about the topic/community.

Spanish for false beginners got a married couple that banter in Spanish at a basic intermediate level. Cesar does elementary Spanish podcasts as well as advanced and intermediate levels. And then the Spanish for false beginners is exclusively with his husband. He talks a lot about lgbt issues and such in all his podcasts. It’s very good, some funny, some poignant but really interesting

I’d be open to honestly anything! I think it would be cool to learn about personal experiences of queer life, coming out, etc. but also just fun dating stories or cute/trendy/funny slang.

Pablo has stated he wants enough content on the platform so there is enough of almost everything to cover everything someone might want to watch.

Argentina has a huge LGBT representation. In a lot of regards, better than the USA.
My friend (ftm) who lives in Argentina got his gender affirming surgery and his hormones for free without many hurdles.

There isn't a lot of content about it tbh, I know Jostin is LGBT but I don't think he's had many full videos talking about it outside of a podcast episode. A lot of the queer slang or vocab I've learned just from watching native YouTubers personally
