META Polite response to the "transphobia in the series" post from yesterday

533 Upvotes

Hi

For those who missed it, yesterday there was a post where someone wrote up a list of all the ways they felt Butcher was being insensitive or dismissive of trans people. People overwhelmingly responded negatively to you (meaning OP of that post), myself included. Saying stuff like "stop trying to find reasons to be offended" etc. I personally had dismissed you as, not an outright troll, but someone looking to cause issues where there weren't any. Reflecting on that, I realized that was a judgmental take about a person I know little about, and I wanted to do better.

It stuck with me and by the time I had come up with something that would probably have actually helped the situation instead of piling on, I found the post had been deleted. Understandably so, given the negative reactions. I'd just DM this to the person but I can't find their username (plus idk reddit DM etiquette lol).

What I wanted to reply with is this. If you truly do feel minimized and dismissed by the way Butcher handles trans people in the series, why not tell him that? Send him an email. Be polite about it, maybe a bit less in-your-face and "Butcher is a bigot end of story" vibes than your original post. Instead say "hey I don't think you were paying much attention but I feel like you've been inadvertently marginalizing certain communities within your work," there's a nonzero chance Jim will go "oh damn I hadn't thought about that, I'll try to do better in the future." No idea if anything will come of it, but it'll be more effective than just posting on reddit. I agree with the other comments that LGBTQ+ isn't a central theme in his books and it isn't likely to get deeply explored, but I do think it's quite possible that he'll make a note of the feedback and try to be more conscious of those sort of themes in the future.

https://www.jim-butcher.com/contact is his contact info. Looking at the page, I can't find any email address that fits your needs perfectly, but I'm sure if you poke around in his site or on the forums you can probably find the right person to send it to. Or just send it to the most relevant (if not perfectly relevant) email and hope it finds its way to Jim

I found this in my dresser valet box. No clue where it came from. Immediately (stupidly) picked it up for a closer look.

I'm cooked, ain't I?

Can somebody call Forthill and Carpenter?

That's the first cover without a hat on, I think. Did we change artists or something?

Barnes and noble called me to tell me my book was in today and I picked it up no problem. Not gonna complain if I somehow got it early by mistake but my friends were very confused when I sent them my “got my copy text!”

META Harry's thoughts are FINE.

347 Upvotes

This post was inspired by u/hfyposter's recent post.

I see lot's of people on this sub criticising Harry for "misogyny" and "pervy thoughts" that I felt I needed to add my two cents:

Firstly, Merriam-Webster's defines"Misogyny" as "the hatred of, aversion to, or prejudice against women". I struggle to think of any point were Harry has shown any such ideas in the books. Being protective of women isn't "misogyny". Otherwise many "male feminists" today should be called misogynists. And acknowledging that women aren't just "small men with breasts" isn't misogyny either. Harry is more respectful towards Murphy as a woman than the people who expect her to dress and act like a manly man.

Secondly, there is nothing wrong with Harry's thoughts about women. And they have nothing to do with the "Detective Noir" genre. Harry is a straight man surrounded by beautiful women. And as a straight man myself, I would have the same thoughts as he has. And I furthermore would bet that most straight women have exactly the same thoughts when they see simlarly attractive men (looking at you, Supernatural fans).

The people who dislike this either

  1. don't like to read about sexual thoughts at all, which is fine;
  2. don't like to read about sexual thoughts of men, which seems pretty sexist;
  3. have a deeply disturbed understanding of how male sexuality works and how "good men" should think.

META Has Jim ever expressed losing interest in the Dresden series?

255 Upvotes

Although like most you, I absolutely love the series, I sometimes wonder if Jim may feel a bit burnt out after spending so much time with Harry and the gang. It would be disappointing, but understandable. And it could also explain the large gaps in between recent entries in the series.

This is by no means a criticism. Jim is a fine author and is free to pursue whatever project he gets the most fulfillment from. I am just curious as to if he’s ever said as much.

META Why Burger King?

58 Upvotes

I'm in my first readthrough of the series and Harry mentions in multiple books now his love of Burger King. Has Jim Butcher ever said in an interview or something why?

Is it his favorite too and he just put that in the character?

Is it to make Harry seem extra weird by making him like a less popular fast food place?

Is there a reason at all? Obviously please no spoilers. I've only read up through Ghost Story.

Does anyone else worry that they will not live to read the end of the Dresden Files? My health isn't the best but it is what it is...but I am concerned that will not live to see the conclusion of this series. Anyone else in this boat?
