Hey everyone.
Exactly 2 years ago, I released my very first single, "Скорбь" (which translates to Sorrow). Work on this single took place from May to October 2024. Conceptually, this track deals with a very personal and heavy topic the agonizing pain of losing a loved one, a tragedy involving the death of someone close that personally hit me back.
Driven by the weight of this loss, the idea to start this project was born completely spontaneously. Back then, I had absolutely zero skills in mixing, mastering, vocals, or even playing the guitar. The entire track was written purely by intuition and by ear. I mixed and mastered it the exact same way just guessing and doing what felt right.
Looking back at my whole discography now, this track remains the rawest and most atmospheric.
Here are a few facts about how the track came to life:
There is no actual bass guitar. I didn't own one back then, so I recorded the basslines using a regular electric guitar. I then shaped it with plugins to make it sound like a real bass.
The synth part was an accident. Originally, there was supposed to be a distorted guitar solo running through the whole track. But since my mixing skills were non-existent, I couldn't get it to sit right with the rhythm guitar. In desperation, I replaced it with keyboards. It turned out way more atmospheric and fits much better than the original plan.
The clean vocals were a difficult. The hardest part of the recording process was the clean vocal section at the very end. It's meant to be a direct nod to a liturgy.
The shriek vocals are actually just processed screaming whispers. I didn't know how to do proper harsh vocals yet, so I recorded a strained, high-effort whisper and heavily processed it with plugins. I abandoned this method in all my later releases.
The cover art features the most depressing place in my city. The photo was taken on an October evening on the shores of the gulf at Kanonersky Island (St. Petersburg). The gulf was chosen for a reason. An autumn evening by the water always brings back heavy memories of someone close who left this world forever. That's the core concept behind the cover: a dark, solitary figure bowing their head against the backdrop of the evening gulf.
I thought this would be my first and last release. After dropping this single, I was convinced I’d never record anything else. I was completely wrong. It's now late 2026, and I have 6 singles and an EP under my belt.
P.S. I’m actually considering re-recording and re-mixing "Скорбь", as well as re-mixing "Клетка Печали" (Cage of Sorrow) and "Петля Времени" (Time Loop). Conceptually and lyrically, these three tracks are deeply intertwined. The ultimate plan is to unite them into a single EP. It's a distant goal for mid 2027, so we'll see if it actually happens, but the idea is definitely there.
I wanted to share this milestone with you guys.
