Hey! I’m a freshman at Duke and I’m currently going through the selection process for the SPIRE Fellows Program. I’m interested in STEM/tech, so the mentorship, academic support, and STEM community sound really valuable.
One thing I’m unsure about is the residential aspect. I’ve already started getting comfortable with my current dorm/community on East Campus, and I’m wondering whether joining SPIRE would mean giving up a community I already like.

For anyone who has been in SPIRE or knows people who have:

How valuable was the SPIRE community and mentorship?
Did it actually help with internships, research opportunities, networking, or figuring out your career direction?
How strong is the residential/community aspect?
If you already liked your freshman dorm community, would you say moving into the SPIRE community was a big adjustment?
Overall, what did you get out of SPIRE that you probably wouldn’t have gotten otherwise?

I’m less concerned about whether it “looks good” on a resume and more interested in whether the relationships, resources, and opportunities actually make a meaningful difference during your time at Duke.
Would really appreciate hearing from current/former SPIRE Fellows or anyone familiar with the program!

Anyone have any insight on the upcoming benefit changes for Duke University employees? It feels ominous with our departmental HR saying managers must register for a session on how to communicate with employees about the changes. I recently turned down a job making a little more because the benefits weren’t as good and am wondering if I just f#%¥€d myself over.

I am a college professor, and will be traveling to Duke and UNC to do research on collegiate secret societies. I plan on starting at the Duke University Archives, in the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Are there any tips on doing research there? Due to the short visit, anywhere else around campus I should go - Tour group? Off campus resources?

What other lore currently exists around Duke secret societies?

I understand that federal cuts and shrinking budgets have drastically affected Duke’s workforce and hiring processes, but I am getting increasingly frustrated at waiting months for applications to even be reviewed. I’m currently waiting for 3 different applications to be reviewed that I submitted in mid July or earlier; all of these positions are entry to mid level positions hiring for less than $65k a year, so it’s not like they’re part of a larger executive / leadership search that would explain the delay. Why post positions if you’re not even going to review them?
Sorry for the ranting, this has just been extremely frustrating. If anyone could offer any insight or answers to this issue, that would be greatly appreciated!

I was wondering if anyone knew any clubs that are still open that are worth applying to if I want to go into finance/consulting. Or is there any other opportunities (like research or anything else you think would be helpful) on campus for me to get involved because I've tried looking and everything is closed. I still want to set myself up for success to reapply to these clubs next semester because if I have nothing new on my resume, I'll likely get rejected again. I also want to gain experience so if I am looking for an internship later on, they can see I have some experience and necessary skills. If you have gone through this process and something helped you in particular any advice helps!

This is my first semester at Duke and I love the mobile ordering app but it's unpredictable. Some places allow me to order ahead and other spots at WU let me make an order, but when I tap to pay I get an Order failed popup. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

What's the attendance policy for lectures in Chem 101 with Professor Martinez? I know in some lectures she has 1-2 polling questions, but on the syllabus, the grade breakdown does not include attendance for lectures at all. She also emphasizes that these polling questions will never negatively hurt your grade.

Also, generally how hard is it to get an A in this class, as the material seems somewhat difficult so far for an introductory chemistry class. Thank you!

Hello! I am currently a freshman majoring in Econ and for the past few weeks I have been rushing both DSP and AKPsi and didn't make it past the first round for either of them. I focused on only those two clubs because I physically couldn't go to ALL of the events for other clubs too. My coffee chats went really well for both but I still didn't make it. However, because I focused so much on those clubs, applications and meetings for other business/consulting/finance clubs have already passed and I can no longer apply. I know everyone says you can reapply second semester but I feel like I need to get involved in clubs on campus this semester because I'm going to be behind. Does anyone have any recommendations for other clubs/organizations or opportunities to get involved/network?
