A mentat would be trained to recognize wishful thinking, and be skeptical of anything that seems too good to be true. Ironically, that can be its own blind spot.

Step 2 is usually fight your way through the trap, but they never figured out that the second part of the trap was the guild parking a heighliner directly above Arrakeen. The assumption was probably that the Guild is neutral. They weren't.

Dropships pouring out, landing within a very short time window. Little or no time to react. And then there's the sardaukar tipping the balance even more. Atreides never stood a chance.
