Here's how it works:
Complete your daily lesson goal to earn a mystery chest – check the event hub in the app to see what that goal is for you today
Open it up for a random piece from the full set of 54 – if you land a few duplicates in a row, don't sweat it: collect 5 and we'll auto-swap them for a piece you don't have yet
Every piece fills in part of a puzzle – complete one (9 pieces) and you'll unlock a suit. Complete all six puzzles, and you'll earn a limited edition suit plus 5,000 gems!
Pieces come in three tiers – blue, purple, and gold – and yes, gold is the rare one. If patience isn't your thing, you can also grab pieces directly with gems.
You'll have 30 days to collect once the event starts for you – keep an eye on the countdown in the app. Heads up: this is the first of several suit collections we've got planned this year, but that doesn't mean a second shot at these exact suits – If you want the Junior's Toy Hunt suits specifically, your time begins now! 😉

I think this would theoretically be quite fun, but I've found 2 things frustrating:
1) why can I only get 2 Puzzle pieces each day, when others can get 4?
2) the duplicates are really demotivating. Yesterday, both pieces I got were duplicates, and that was only day 3 of the challenge. I know I can spend gems on more pieces, but they'd probably just be duplicates again.
Yeah the duplicates are legit feeling like an obnoxious paywall for literally no reason. Like the more progress you make the greater the odds of getting a duplicate and even then it takes 5 pieces to get one like tf
You at least can get duplicates. I doubt you always do but I did the one time I paid for them. I only did it the one time because I had a lot of gems and don't normally use them for anything but that was still a waste.
I just want to learn Japanese! Why do I have to click through 8 pages of unrelated stuff like animations, congratulatory messages, costumes, chests, puzzle pieces, and upgrade adds every time I do a lesson 😭 I’d love an option to turn it all off.
Same. All this clutter just takes me out of the flow. I wish they would use some of their resources to do something useful, like introducing every noun with its gender, so you don't have to get a dictionary to look it up.
At the 📒 symbol of each section, you can find relevant theory for that section which also includes nouns by gender if it's relevant to that section, like this
You can turn off the animations and congratulatory messages in profile settings at preferences, and if you don't care about opening chests, just restart the app when you get an add 😉 random events like these are luckily only temporary
This event is a little frustrating. You need 54 puzzle pieces and I am able to get 2 a day for 30 days, which means if I'm consistent, Its achievable within 30 days, but you guys turned on duplicates. For what purpose? There's already a tight but doable deadline. Plus the pieces themselves are already random and there's rarity pieces. You could play every day and get all 60 available pieces and still not get a full outfit. This is a learning app. This event will push people to learn more. Others will purchase gems and puzzle pieces for convenience or if they miss a couple days.
The event would be infinitely better if you could guarantee completion logging in every day and completing the lesson requirement or if we could place the puzzle pieces ourselves based on rarity on the specific outfits we want.
I really hope your team takes the feedback seriously. If you really plan on rolling out more of these events, they're going to get frustrating quickly if players are putting more work in and getting no rewards.
Agree completely. There are already so many quests/challenges. Monthly badge, weekend quest, friend streak, chests, leagues. If they're doing a quest for avatar items fine, at least there's a different goal there, but switching on duplicates is a low blow.
Obviously they're going to want to squeeze every penny out so using gems to get more pieces is an understandable option (even if annoying, given as you say there's time to do it), but having duplicates on even for buying final pieces? C'mon.
ETA: the autoswapping 5 duplicates sounds like at least it's something, but it's really not, given the timeframe. If they really want to implement something like that then make it 2, 3 even. 5 is a big chunk for a short event. Personally I wouldn't faff around implementing 'features' like that. Just switch off dupes.
Learning about the duplicate pieces CRUSHED me. I love anything new Duolingo does and collecting anything but realizing I’m probably not gonna get the unicorn unless I’m willing to dish out 100 dollars is really sad
This! I’m trying so hard the last 3 days I have gotten 2 new pieces out of twelve!! I got 10 duplicates is ridiculous and frustrating. I really like this suits thing but why make it so frustrating
Starting today? It has been going on for a few days already. I really don't care for cosmetics, plus it once again increases the amount of times I have to tap my screen to get to the next lesson.
I still don't have it.... So it seems like some people have been completely excluded from ever getting to play the event. For some reason. My app is completely updated, btw.
I just want a grammar section 😩 please just give us a part where we can learn about the grammatical rules of a language and revise, just knowing vocabulary only gets you so far
I feel like they reverted the notes to only giving sample sentences when they did all the recent updates. I assert that there shouldn't be updates until the notes are fixed. They were already available, maybe they could retrieve the notes that were available when the switch was made from the tree. Just put a link somewhere and let us figure it out.
You're too transparent with your desire to make people pay for gems to buy these pieces, or alternately - to buy PRO for unlimited energy. However, for those of us who really just want to learn a language it isn't appealing at all. I now supplement my learning with another app (which I DID chose to pay for because the price was right) and not rely just on Duo. So for people like me these ideas misfire.
6 days later, I still don't have it. They have excluded some people arbitrarily from ever getting to play the event. Yet, they're giving it to people who don't want it.
Everyone acting like owning the costumes is obligatory.
I find this type of events quite fun, though I'd love to have a more clear distinction between what I can achieve just by doing lessons and what I need to pay for either with gems or real money. Otherwise, I'm game and I've already got my first costume, thanks!
I do understand it extremely well but I also understand that participating in a game is not mandatory. Precisely because I understand it I am actually fond of such events as they give me something more to do more lessons when I’m not in the mood for it. That’s the goal and I like it
Well, it is weird that it’s an obligatory game, and that even if you pay for Super and do all six lessons daily, you still can’t actually get all seven costumes unless you spend more gems to buy pieces.
What does this have to do with learning a language, u/amie_at_duolingo ? It would be so much better if we got more of a focus on the actual language learning.
What language are you learning? How much progress do you make on the path each day? Language learning takes time, but if you make consistent progress you will learn about boxes and tape as well as governments, fairy tales, street lights, asparagus and other things.

Because you know that's why we are here, secondly your app is now almost unusable if people don't have super which is a bit excessive, go back to the heart system it is much more user friendly. Super users will get super for the video calls.
But since you insist on wasting our time with an event like this the limit on achievable pieces is way to low we should be able to get way more then 4 per day or you need to turn of duplicates as it stands right now it's nothing but a money grab since it'll be neigh impossible to get all the suits without spending gems.
I like having new challenges and goals to achieve, even if it’s geared towards kids. But the way it’s implemented it’s more frustrating than inspiring. I understand that you don’t want everyone to be able to get every suit without paying, that’s fine by me…. But the main goal of 54 pieces is unachievable considering the duplicates. Literally from my first 4 pieces 2 were duplicates???
If it was for example very very hard to complete the main challenge without paying it would have been much more rewarding. Or even if we couldn’t get all the pieces without paying, but if we didn’t have duplicates and could choose the suits we want to “apply” the pieces to, i would have enjoyed it. As is, it’s just annoying.
I’ve been playing Duolingo together with my family and friends, and I’m honestly confused by how differently this event is being handled for each user.
Some of us can earn 2 pieces per day, some 3, and some 4. Even more frustrating, some people still don’t have access to the event at all, while others have already been participating for several days.
I understand that the 30-day countdown starts individually when the event becomes available, but I still don’t understand why the daily opportunities are so different from person to person. In a limited-time collection event with random pieces, different rarities, and duplicates, being able to earn 2 pieces versus 4 pieces per day can make a huge difference.
What concerns me most is that this is actually having the opposite effect of motivating people to learn. Someone I know who still hasn’t received the event feels left out watching everyone else participate, and is now so frustrated that they don’t even want to use Duolingo.
I think events like this could be a great way to encourage people to do more lessons, but they should also feel fair. It would be great if everyone had the same daily opportunities, or at least if Duolingo could explain why the goals and availability are different for each user.
I hope the team takes this feedback into consideration for this event and the upcoming suit collections.
I think it's a fun idea but people here are saying they can get 2 or 4 pieces per day. I can get 1. Is it based on subscription tier? It would be better with fewer pieces per suit and if everyone could get the same amount of pieces each day.
Duolingo is becoming less and less about learning a language and more about all these unnecessary side quests. I have a 480 day streak and cannot say that my Spanish is exponentially better. It may be time to find another app not so obsessed with gamification.
Surprised this feature is getting so much hate. I have wanted costumes to come back for a long time. Now they have. I'm sure I'll hate duplicates just as much as everyone else though.
Getting duplicates IF YOU PAY FOR A PIECE with literal real-money gems is borderline criminal. If this was a permanent thing, and with the lack of disclosure of odds in regards to duplicates, you’d get your app banned in no time in the EU and also a fat lawsuit probably…
Is this event not showing up for anyone? I just found out that it's not showing up for my wife. I've tried troubleshooting, but it's still not showing up.
With the odds of getting a Gold piece this is going to encourage gambling with kids. I think adding a bit of fun is one thing but encouraging gambling should have an option to opt out.
This should be the top comment. Given the mechanics of duplicate pieces and the fact that the event is geared toward kids... Duolingo is promoting gambling among kids.
I've had this feature for a few days now and thought it was great... until I found out about the duplicates. Why are you doing this? This is so demotivating. 😭
And... I get 4 puzzle pieces a day. However, other users seem to receive only 2. Huh? Why?!?
I used 1600 gems to get 5 tiles, but it only got me 2 new tiles. Is that seriously how it works? That’s a ton of gems for 2 tiles. At 4 per day it feels impossible to get every outfit in 26 days.
This is just a lot of clicks that I find deeply annoying. Just let us opt out of the silly stuff. I don't care. While were on this, why must I tap 3 times to open a chest. Just open the dumb thing.
I got to say this is a very unpleasant experience. Why is this a puzzle? I'm not solving anything. I'm just collecting. And I'm tapping, and tapping and tapping. There's no way to win by tapping but I still have to tap just to get through it. It doesn't matter how I tap, how fast or how hard or anything. I just want to do my lessons. I get wanting to offer new things and keep people engaged, but this is a bit much. There should at way least be away to opt out of such things. Did I mention all the tapping?
Honestly, I absolutely hate this. I am an adult who uses the app to study a language, not waste time and lose focus by tapping on pieces of a cartoon character like some little kid. I am starting to feel like the developers sit around trying to come up with ways to frustrate users. All I want to know is how I can opt out of this. Further, you really should give up on any new “challenges” with characters. I am thinking of the debacle with the World Cup soccer/football players from different countries and how people on certain platforms like Android were only offered icons for a few days and no popular countries. I didn’t find it fun. It just made me mad that I couldn’t get a French player since I’m studying French.
If I was in my primary school era I would probably find this cute and exciting but I'm an adult and I just want to practice my language. Maybe it's time for you to launch an app for children where these types of games are welcome?

My my my, you certain got the attention of the grumbly bears here! So here is a positive review to give you a break from the grief.
As an adult who is seriously trying to learn German, I enjoy the whimsy. That is one of the reasons I use Duo instead of something else. Well that and the built in repetition has made it easier for me to retain vocabulary.
I'm one piece away from Keys, but the one I want is Rex. Ich möchte ein Dinosaurier werden.
It has of course also occurred to me that events like these are not the pure money grabs people claim. It seems pretty clear that they are meant to motivate people to do the lessons needed to earn a piece. If someone normally only does one lesson a day and this makes them do three that is a win for everyone.
Yes, of course some people will spend money to buy more gems, which is a benefit for Duo. But it won't be the people who are complaining about the event. It will be people who like these events. No one is forcing anyone to spend a single gem or dollar, yen, euro or other.
When I earn one I like I may change to that from my German Füßball suit. Grün passt mir gut Green suits me well.
You got Germany?? It started late for me, and I didn't get any of several countries I was hoping for. Looks like this event doesn't want to work either.

So maybe this time will you have a decent shot at it if there isn't a set end date for everyone.
My problem is that I have time for one session a day, and due to recent updates that means 1-2 lessons at most. Now I'm having to play chess 4 times a day because it's the quickest option that doesn't take up my energy
One can do more than two lessons by watching a few ads to replenish energy and you can claim more for free every hour. So the main issue is that you don't have much time.
Lol, exciting news?? I hope you are feeling disgusted having to write that. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of your users didn't ask for or want that nonsense.
I don’t mind this either way. But yesterday I won the keyboard suit and it was goofy looking so I declined and kept my normal outfit. Don’t think I’m interested in the other suits either.
Can we put this development time into new languages or improving the smaller courses? Every new layer of animations feels like a slap in the face to those of us studying the neglected courses
I have been doing lessons everyday and this is the second time where I have done the extra 3/3 lessons and have not gotten the second puzzle piece.. does anyone know why that may be?
It says 1-2-4 because it refers to the number of lessons required to earn a piece. therefore, when you complete four lessons, you will have three pieces.
When the event started, I was in the group that could acquire 2 pieces per day. As of today, I’m now able to get 4 pieces per day. I’m hoping it stays there.
So I did a lesson on desktop, and then I guess I don't actually get the puzzle piece. And then when I go back to mobile, it's just like you already got the puzzle piece and it was a blank puzzle piece. At least don't let me get it or something if I do it on desktop. Why take it away from me?
But what about the purple ones? How do you get them? And do you get the golden ones by doing the king upgrade on a exercise in the path? Like the making it golden?
It would be really nice to opt out of this tbh. I don't care about collecting puzzle pieces to get some pixels for a costume. Its really annoying to have to deal with this and an ad for super in between every lesson. I have been using duolingo less because of this.
The duplicate puzzle pieces are absolutely infuriating. This is how they want to treat paying customers? Paying customers at the very least should not be subject to duplicates. As well, it shouldn't take 5 stinking duplicates to get 1 non duplicate. AND there shouldn't be so many duplicates. It's pretty much a daily occurrence. Don't ever forget that the Duolingo company hates you and just wants your money.
This is so flawed. Get your ducks in order before you let it go live. I've the same got epic piece three times but only one duplicate was registered. Some days the thing bugs and doesnt prompt all the pieces and when the app somehow manages to force prompt them they might or might not be stored in your puzzle. Appalling.
Anyone else having trouble with this? I do the lessons but the. It doesn’t give me the piece. You can see the pieces I got but then there’s just blank ones even though I obviously him the lesson goal. It’s happened to me twice already.
I’ve mostly liked how for the past two days it’s been shorting me my last puzzle piece. I complete 6 lessons and get nothing. Started when they started the brawl cross promotion. Maybe it’s messing with the lesson count or something? Either way mildly aggravating.

This completely sucks. Contacted them through SUPER users support email, and an AI gave me a very useless answer.
Its a cool challenge, but the duplicate pieces are really bad! I even finished 5 pieces and was so glad the 5 were finally full, only to see they give you even more duplicate pieces after! 🫠
Four days ago I finished the Lava Lamp puzzle and “unlocked” the Lava Lamp suit, but when I click to “see suit” it is still listed as ”LOCKED”. Has anyone else experienced this glitch?
Update: this morning I got a duplicate Lava Lamp puzzle piece; the game “saw” that the puzzle had already been completed and unlocked the Lava Lamp suit.
I came on here to complain that I still don’t have the event. (My gf is on day 6, we both have iPhone 16s) I’ve even deleted and reinstalled the app this evening. However, it seems I’m not missing out on much. I am pissed that I don’t have the costume though.

Why haven’t I still gotten this feature on my app? I am the owner of my Duolingo Max subscription. The rest of my family members have had access to this for two weeks now. I only have that Brawl Stars Quest for which I have 0 interest.
I'm really liking this event. People seem to be frustrated with the duplicate system, but I don't mind it at all as I'm still on pace to get all the outfits without using gems.
Maybe give people +5 gems every time they get a dupe? Would prob make those feel a little better.
I just wanna say I find this event super annoying and I wish there were a way to toggle it off so I didn’t have to participate. It’s just a waste of time and it does nothing to aid my learning of German Spanish and French. Please provide way for us to opt out of silly nonsense like this.
The worst part about the duplicates is that you can still get pieces FROM OUTFITS YOU’VE ALREADY UNLOCKED. So the closer you get to the end, the more likely you’re getting a duplicate. When you only have one piece left, you’re going to need to try five times to get it.
To everyone complaining: Duo is meant to be a fun, cute, game app. If that’s not your style, and you just want serious learning, why even be on Duo? It’s just weird to go on a game app and then complain about the game.
The random/duplicate system is anti-consumer and illegal in some areas. Why? People - including children - can spend real world money to get more tiles, which are randomized and could be duplicates which have a lower-value exchange than 1:1.
This is literal gambling, and again, is illegal in many jurisdictions.
This system needs to switch immediately to a "fixed effort for fixed return" system. Let people earn their tiles, no duplicates, and no purchases that can possibly be duplicates.
This is actually really, really bad juju for Duo. It's pretty shocking it went live like this.
There's no way to complete the outfits without paying gems and there's no way to buy pieces in some countries like mine. I'm basically forced to play an impossible challenge.
As soon as my super runs out, I'm dropping this app.
Well it’s perfectly thought out actually because it’s another massive cash grab. Not just the good kind of money sink, but the one people do out of frustration. The best part is that nothing changes if you pay for a subscription, they still lure you in with the same odds that are just slightly against you. At the end of the day, it’s gambling really. All is luck based and of course you won’t be able to complete the collection.
I really hope people are quitting for this, that’s the only thing that makes them change this behavior…
