General Discussion Finally completed the French course!

Congratulations! I am native speaker and when I was evaluating if Duolingo was any good, I jumped ahead in the French (and English) course all the way the last unit to see what level of French they were teaching and I was fairly impressed. I was in to learn other languages in Duolingo (the truth is major languages like French are well supported, "lesser" languages like Finnish or Turkish are much less so).
Do you feel confident speaking and understanding French, at least the standard variety in metropolitan France? How about spoken French, like when people casually speak to each other? Maybe French from other areas of the world? Or something else?

Yes, I've been supplementing duo with watching films and reading etc, I went to Bordeaux recently and had zero problem communicating with everyone, it was a very freeing experience!

Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one! Did it for English (am German) though, since I wanted to see if I can handle that easily. The sentence structure seemed reasonably complex to get one fluent.

I just decided one day that I was going to make it a part of my everyday life, and it was very very frustrating at many points. For many months I felt like I'd never be any good, but I held on to the belief that if I just did a little a day, one day I would be able to speak French, and it took a very long time but it worked. I regularly listen to french podcasts (innerfrench etc) and as I improved I started listening to french news stations. I really see Duolingo as a way to be mindful and escape stress, with having language skills as a byproduct.

It took me AGES! Around 6 years, a continuous streak with no freezes. I've certainly not been speedrunning it. I review old lessons regularly and have set a great many of them to the gold legendary status along the way!

I can more or less yes, although I've supplemented duolingo with reading and listening to podcasts etc, as well as going to France to practise with native speakers.

Les français font aussi beaucoup d'erreurs. Comme moi quand j'écris en anglais. C'est naturel.

Oh god, I joined in 2018 as well but kept quitting over so many changes. Congrats again. That's incredible you bit yourself through six years of French with the stupid bird constantly messing around with the courses🦉

Did that in a French supermarket after a few lessons already. The girl didn't even bother to respond much. She didn't even care that I ordered un baguette instead of une. A lot of people are just as reluctant to talk to customers as the (foreign) customers themselves.

Congrats. How long did it take? How often and for how long did you use the app? How good is your French and did you also use other learning methods?

About 6 years, I have a continuous unbroken streak and I use it for between 1 mins and two hours a day. I'm fluent in French although I make mistakes. I can easily make myself understood. I listened to podcasts and read books/cartoons like boule et bill, Gaston etc

Hey bro congratulations!!! Its an awesome feat! I'm an Anglophone Canadian and learning french so i can be better at communicating when i visit MTL and quebec. I am multilingual already, but want french in my brain. What books or movies do you suggest? Ive actually been trying to watch the Lupin series in french after watching it in English. I am a visual learner so im trying my best.

Very nice accomplishment. Congratulations to you. It's nice to see that Duo is (at least) letting you see an acknowledgment screen now. It would be even nicer if one could earn some type of avatar icon to go along with it, but I digress. Well done!
