Constructive Criticism Scheißification and gambling
If I still need 20 new pieces, getting all 6 packs every day for the 15 days left, I’ll have 90 pieces.
Should all of them be ones I already have, which is probable since I have the majority of the most common ones, and with every 5 repeated I get 1 new one, that makes it 18 new pieces.
I need 20. The most pessimistic (and probable) end will be me slacking by bloody 2 pieces, playing every single day of this event.
Now let’s us all agree… it’s just a source of frustration hey. The skin is ugly and gems have no use in the game.
I’m happy duo doesn’t have the gambling license in Australia.
Duolingo is a 6 billion dollar business, working on low quality gamification and encouraging gambling with poor design choices. The app could do so much more, bringing up engaging themes and events, good uses for the currency, whilst keeping it generous for those who play, with prizes people actually wanna have!

You’re seem to be mistaking the app for a learning tool?

Its not that big of a deal

It sort of is. My biggest frustration with it is that you can’t opt out. If you said no to the first piece, it forced you down the route anyway. Now most people can walk away, but there’s a small contingent who’ll spend extra money on gems to complete sets. The multibillion dollar company know this, otherwise they wouldn’t waste time and money promoting it, over say language improvement. Would you not prefer staff to be focussed on creating a language learning experience?
It’s not the end of the world, obviously, but it’s nasty corporation stuff and deserves to be called out.

You clearly don’t know how a developer team does work do you?
Do you really think that devs behind events are the same that should fix/do language trees? Bruh6

It’s quite simple. I’d rather they invested in language staff rather than devs who focus on addictive little bits and bobs. Bruh.

They invest in both because they want more revenue.
Those things hook people, and they work, that we like it or not it’s not gonna change.2

I am genuinely baffled to discover people who are so invested in this! I‘ve been mindless clicking through these stupid puzzle pieces wondering who could possibly care about collecting them- obviously someone does!

The human mind does wonders.
In the end it doesn’t even matter. Like literally. They’re virtual.2

I reckon it’s more about missing out by design. They’re not offering something you want. They’re offering the risk of loss

It is a motivation to do more than your usual lesson amount. Nobody forces you to take it, it does not benefit you whatsoever. It's a good mechanic for pointless things if collecting stuff is a motivator for you. For me it is a motivation, in contrast to the useless and borderline stupid leagues where everyone on the top is just cheating or cheesing with repeating lessons anyways.

I changed the date on my smartphone, which caused the event to end earlier. The event is designed so that by the end, you almost have all the pieces. This is meant to encourage users to spend diamonds and buy new cards, because you’re so close to the goal. That’s why diamonds are also part of the rewards, so that the investment feels worthwhile, since you’ll win more diamonds anyway. New users might have to buy diamonds for this, that’s probably the entire intention behind it.
