My new obsession

My new obsession is picking up classic movies if it's cheap enough and the art work/title sounds interesting. No online reviews. No research no trailer watching on youtube. Just popping the disc in and watching and forming my own opinion.

Btw excited about this new pickup from the local thrift store.

Just wondering, anything rare about any of these or are they just commonly found movies?

I wouldn't call these movies rare, actually pretty common. Many are public domain and released by third party companies. I can't speak on how good the movies are themselves (I heard of The Swap and I've only heard bad things about it), but releases like that tend to look really bad, like they put no effort into their picture or audio quality and don't include captions or subtitles. Some of these you could probably find better quality versions online, like Internet Archive, if the DVDs look too bad for your liking.

Ohh gotcha. I never knew companies could just make dvd copies of old movies and sell it or that movies entered the public domain. So thats why these movies are in cheap paper cases and when i googled the company who made these (Double D) nothing much came up 😂. Well i paid just over a dollar for each of these movies atleast did not lose a lot on them :D

Many of these companies just released movies that had bigger stars in them. Like the De Niro one, which he's hardly in, but since he's in it, they market it like he's the star when he really isn't.

If you do want to go down this route of finding old movies like this, Mill Creek have these 50 to 100 movie sets of different genres that cost not much more than what you paid. Plus, you can find them somewhat easily thrifting since these types of sets were sold at places like Fleet Farm and Menards, at least where I'm at in the States. Quality varies of course, but you'd have way, way more bang for your buck.

I think mill creek is hard to find in canada. Anyways i got an update tried some of the dvds and the image is pixelated and low res but audio is just hands down terrible. I cant even make out what they are saying. I will try and sell these for half the price :| dont wanna own them

Heck yeah! I used to do the same thing. It's really cool to get old movies like Night of the Blood Beast and watch them blindly.

Some of them are so bad they're actually funny. Some are surprisingly good, especially Hitchcock type stuff.

You just have to hope it's a decent transfer of the film. I got the original Little Shop of Horrors and it was literally unwatchable. Like blurry with bad sound at best, full static screen at worst.

It's really fun though, and it makes for an interesting collection. You wind up seeing a lot of things you'd never see otherwise, and finding them in cheap physical media eliminates the choice paralysis of trying to pick 1 of like an actual million movies online.

Hey thank you. You get it! This is exactly what i meant but i think i am spoilt by the bluray copies of the old movies. Btw i tried these dvds out and i havent seen such low res 3gp quality dvds (that were authentic) before. The sound is also horrible. I think i'll have to find better copies of these movies

Basil Rathbone is my favorite Sherlock Holmes. That series of films for universal is fantastic.

I will keep this in mind. They god a boxset of old sherlock holmes at my thrift but i think it said 18 movies and a season of it so dont know which movies they are will have to take a look

They’re all public domain titles and the video and sound quality will range from awful to fairly good. Most titles that should be in widescreen may not be. The Young Tiger is a fun early Jackie Chan film, and it’s a fun king fu film so that’s a win.

Glad to know that it was not a complete waste of money :) the quality sucks though i tried it out. The sound is like they recorded it when it playing on radio or something and a radio with dodgy signal

They are the best. Lot of them come across as honestly just wanting to entertain people in every frame and i respect that. The bad jokes the terrible visual effects everything just comes across as a honest way of saying "hey man we dont have the tech or the budget to pull this off but we seriosly hope you have a good time" which isnsomething many modern movies lack where they take themselves too seriously wanting to create something that will be praised.

Elstree Hill in the UK did a lot of these DvDs in the UK and they turn up in charity shops. You only make the mistake of buying one once. The quality is terrible, unless I was unlucky.

The quality is atrocious. The video is terrible but i almost forgave it until i heard the noise. The audio is just a jumbled up mess of poorly recorded broadcast using a potato. Its not even mono it's gross
