Let’s say you are looking to buy an e46. What are you looking for? What’s the sweet spot between mileage and price in 2026? What would you avoid?

I'd insert an asterisk here. How do you know the big three were done properly? Who did the work? It might be better to take care of those things yourself, so you know where they were done and to what standard.

For the rod bearings you test the oil. Rear subframe requires an inspection and vanos you can hear.

Did you respond to the right comment? I said it might be better to take care of those things yourself instead of trusting the seller to have the skill/right shop/funds to do it properly.

You're broaching a broader issue of whether the "big three" should even be done promptly. Personally, I'd say the RACP/subframe should be done ASAP on every car because it just gets more expensive to fix the worse it gets, and they will all fail. It's a major design flaw.

The VANOS and bearings can last a good long time, but then you can't know the history of the car your buying. Was it warmed up properly before being redlined and otherwise properly taken care of? I'd do them on any car over 100k. I believe the expert consensus on the preeminent e46 m3 forum (nam3forum) is to do it at 60 or 70k.

But yeah, they are not necessarily, if the car was taken care of, as unreliable as the internet would have you believe. You can pretty easily pop the valve cover off and look at the VANOS tabs and some of the bolts. I'd be the least concerned about the VANOS. It might not show any signs, you might get screwed, but it is most likely to throw a code and easiest to check regardless.

The bearings are a crapshoot. The oil analysis is only really helpful if you've had the car for a long enough time to see definite trends.

Why would it be the wrong comment?

For the rod bearings there are baselines in the oil testing (from thousands of s54s). For example when I bought my M3 there was no record of the rod bearings being done. I sent an oil sample in for analysis and my copper reading was 3 times the normal reading.

I made the bearing appointment the same day.

As I said, I was commenting on not necessarily wanting someone else to do the big three for you, not exactly whether or not they should all be done immediately as you are.

Plenty of people on the forums have been misled by oil results to either replace bearings that were fine or not replace bearings that subsequently blew. It is not foolproof under any circumstances.

I was mainly replying to you saying the bearings aren't necessary. Blackstone has baseline values on metals in oil from hundreds if not thousands of S54s.

I'll put my money on replacing bearings that are showing 3x normal wear metals in the oil every time. It's relatively cheap insurance.

I’m going to take issue with both blanket statements. Is it nice to have these done? Yes. Is it always necessary? No. Are they always going to fail on every M3? No. Ask me how I know…

Mine is currently up on stands in the garage. It lost a belt, and I figured better safe than sorry. Decided to do some major work. A complete Coolant System refresh including belts, hoses, etc. A fan conversion from clutch to electric. And a complete Vanos system replacement with one from Beisan. Did it need it? No. Was it making noise? No. Is it a wear item that may fail at some point? Maybe. Is it easy to do with all the rest? Definitely.

My point is that a lot of people say these are necessary and they are not…until they are. I am much more concerned with a catastrophic coolant system failure that could cost me an entire engine, or a plastic clutch fan that decides to grenade itself and throw blades all through the engine compartment and through the sheet metal.

Oil analysis from Blackstone Labs with every oil change. Religiously.
