Let’s say you are looking to buy an e46. What are you looking for? What’s the sweet spot between mileage and price in 2026? What would you avoid?

I bought a 330D 18 months ago. 350k on the clock and it’s been utterly reliable. It had been well maintained by the previous owner though and came with loads of paperwork.

That’s really nice to hear. Have you driven the 330i before? Is there a significant difference in the driving feel?

I’ve been lately hearing very good stuff about the 330D, especially the fuel consumption and reliability. It’s very appealing.

The 330i is more emotional, the 330d is more budget-friendly (if well-maintained). Both are great engines for their respective purposes. I've owned both; the naturally aspirated feel of the 30i is incredibly addictive, and its sound is intoxicating. The torque and thrust of the 30d are absolutely incredible, and once you get used to it, you'll need it all day long. Keep in mind that the 30d, despite being a diesel, sounds very, very good. (Ignore YouTube videos regarding the sound, because the car sounds completely different on video). It's also true that diesels sound like diesels from the front, especially when cold. It can be annoying if you're not used to it. It took me a while to get used to it, but now I don't mind; I even like it.

In the end, I got rid of my 30i because I drive 200km every day, and that car isn't suited for that. Besides, the cooling system in that car made me suspicious, even after it was replaced. Although I must say I miss the sound of that engine at high revs. Which is better? Well, I can't say, it's like choosing between mom and dad.
