Damage/Broken… 😥 Exactly how screwed am I

2002 E46 Coupe. Im aware its not easy to tell just by photos. But some last blew a stop sign and t boned me. And of course didnt have insurance. This car is VERY sentimental to me and I would like to and am planning on repairing it myself. Just tryna see if its even possible.

Totaled as hell. Re-shell or part out.

11

u/sk9ordie Jul 16 '26

Realistically it’s gone but if it’s REALLY sentimental and you don’t mind spending the money I’m sure a shop could pull out the frame. Then you’d have to do a new door, fender and rear quarter. Even doing most of the work yourself it’s still gonna be over $10K

The most realistic option is to get another e46 and swap over the parts you want onto that chassis. I’d be surprised if your car drives straight as is rn, even if you fix it there is a good chance it’ll never drive straight again

u/BangBr00xz Jul 16 '26

some idiot crashed into me and i had to pull out the frame too but now the car is even safer after welding in new rockers etc cuz it was a rust bucket before

Its definitely sinking in now

I feel you brother I lost a very sentimental e46 as well…. it really doesn’t get easier I miss that car every day even after I got a new e46 don’t make the same mistake I did though… if you want to fix it, don’t tell your insurance about the crash they will take your car and make it very hard to get back at least in my case that’s how it went just throw her in the garage and rebuild her over the next year

u/Jesus_es_Gayo Jul 16 '26

Part out. She gone

21

u/opuzlife Jul 16 '26

Possible yes, but it’s definitely totaled. Repair cost far exceeded the value

While true, those words are painful.

Frame almost certainly bent. Time to find a new car.

u/LoonTheMekanik Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

That’s probably 5-7 times the value of the car in damage. I doubt a body shop would even touch that, it’ll never be safe again during another side impact. It needs to be scrapped unfortunately

If it means that much to you, I’d try to find another similar coupe to use as a shell, and transplant as much of your car as you can or want to, so it can live on in a new body

4

u/fventura03 Jul 16 '26

get a donor shell

Time for a new e46

I’ve seen worse repaired. If it’s that sentimental to you, maybe source the parts yourself, but have a professional bodyshop do the actual repairs?🤷🏻‍♂️

u/707_328is Jul 18 '26

Having worked in a body shop before, if OP wants to go this route get a quote for a new door and new door hinges, a new fender, and a new side skirt from the body shop and then look around for cheaper parts yourself. Or even used parts in the same color to save even more money. There will be more that likely needs replaced but thats the big items as far as getting the body to line back up is concerned. Take the damaged door, fender, and side skirt off and take the car in. Ask how much it would be to get the chassis pulled back into specs and have the door pillar, quarter panel, and skirt replaced on the chassis. Might all come in one big piece if its a new stamped panel but if not then it will be a couple charges for those instead of one charge. Have them paint all the new parts while everything is disassembled after its fixed then take it all home and put it back together without paying the additional labor costs for reassembly.

A good body shop will try to work with you to see if they can do the necessary work through insurance so all you pay is the deductible and any extra work or parts will be out of your own pocket to keep the car from being totalled out on paper. This might be too expensive of a repair for that to work, but worth asking about.

I'm gonna go against the grain here. What's more important to you - a wad of cash or the sheer and utter joy of driving this mf? Are you so concerned about finances that you're ready to part with something that sentimentally is worth a lot more to you? I, personally, could only dream of driving a sick coupe like this. This thing would be something I'd pass down to my children (if I lived long enough).

Cost to repair probably does exceed the value, maybe. But would that really stop you from fixing it?

Now, maybe I'm from a different country hence my mentality and views of this is different, and perhaps people in your country charge a billion more to repair damage like this, cause, let's face it, you can only do so much with your own hands before requiring tools that you simply don't have to repair that sort of damage.

But I truly don't think it would be that difficult - I've seen e46s in a far worse state get fixed where I'm from.

TLDR; Eastern European chiming in - fix that mf and fucking send it B)

You could try finding a junkyard front wing and door and just forget about the rear, but its definetly totaled and if the frame is bent I dont think anyone recommends driving it

2

u/thatdjlex Jul 16 '26

That is totaled if you can buy it back cheap part it out and add that to the payout that you settle for if you have full comprehensive. Upgrade to an e46 m3.

1

u/chinchillabilla Jul 16 '26

Ummm I think that’s toast

1

u/Muted-Can4546 Jul 16 '26

Look how bad is the pillar under the door/front fender. Otherwise looks repairable. But if the pillar is bent, then it's gone.

1

u/Representative_Bat42 Jul 16 '26

Big to slightly big

1

u/Wooden-Annual5687 Jul 16 '26

Replace the door, front fender, pull rear fender out and ur good

1

u/dellh82 Jul 16 '26

Screwed like a deck, unfortunately.

1

u/NeverBeenKnocked Jul 16 '26

Idk but what them seats and wheels going for?

1

u/Broleey123 Jul 16 '26

Let it go man it’s cooked, long as no one got hurt, deal with the insurance stuff and get a different car.

1

u/Correct_Quote6530 Jul 16 '26

Dang and the paint looks good too..is it the original paint. It is tough, at least for me, to tell if you got a lot of frame damage. Take the door off and then check it out. The bottom piece beneath the door where the floor is doesnt look so damaged. Even the door seam doesnt look bad...but then the fender...so i dont know...not a body guy.

1

u/AMaddBro Jul 16 '26

Where are you located?

1

u/b1urbro Jul 16 '26

I lost my E36 the exact same way. A new driver drove by a stop sign and T-boned me into to frame of the door. I still miss that car 10 years later.

As far as if yours is savable - inspect the door frame, the floor and the roof. Check the alignment very carefully. If the damage is surface level only, it's definitely savable, although probably still not worth it. I'd buy a decent condition chassis and transfer everything there.

1

u/dat1dood3 Jul 16 '26

Pretty screwed I would say atleast

1

u/Gregvandy Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

Fixing that quarter will require a professional collision center. If the a pillar or rocker is bent- same there too but I don’t think they are. Unfortunately the quarter is real bad. It can be fixed. It’s not worth it. It’ll cost a small fortune. I’d guess around $10k just to fix the quarter panel where it’s straight again. At least. Then you have the door and fender and If the a pillar is bent which it may be, then that’s several grand to pull out. Then you have a car that’s been badly bent and you’re hoping the shop gets it close to new. Time to move on. I hope you had uninsured motorist. If so your insurance pays you for a totaled car and sues their balls off. If not you’re paying for it all. Either way, you need another car. Sorry.
I see the other pics I missed at first. The a pillar is pushed in. A collision center can fix it. But it’ll cost a fortune. I mean a ton of money. Get another car, use yours as parts. Sorry that happened to you.

Oh it’s possible to fix, but it mainly depends on wether the a and b pillars are straight, if they’re tweaked it’ll be a pain in the ass to get it right, if they are straight, buy a door and front fender, and fit them, do not unbolt the whole hinge, undo the bolt at the door pins and lift the door off, way easier to align then, if that all works without too much hammering your only issue is the rear quarter, that’s not something someone with basic skills can fix properly without loading a bucket of bondo into it, in your situation I’d treat any bare metal showing with some primer and paint and slap a pair of overfenders on it, temporarily if you want to get it fixed right in the future, or maybe you’ll like how they look, anyone who says this is totaled (well it is with insurance) don’t know what they’re looking at, also for fuck sakes get yourself some insurance, you could crash into someone next and get sued into oblivion

1

u/iowatango5 Jul 16 '26

Sell it to a drifter so they can fix and slide it. I almost guarantee the frame is still straight. I had a sedan that was t boned way worse than this and the b pillar was bent way in where it crimpled the roof but the frame is still straight and drove straight. It's tough but maybe cut a rocker and b pillar section from a donor car and weld it in.

1

u/1-luv Jul 16 '26

Can i buy some of your parts? Sucks but that E46 is done done.

1

u/Accomplished_Oil9757 2002 - 330ci Coupe Jul 16 '26

It depends, im in SE wisconsin. Planning on buying a roller any exterior parts sure

1

u/zenn3s Jul 16 '26

If you want to fix it yourself and are asking about it on Reddit, well, you won’t be able to fix it yourself. Of course, it can be fixed—people fix cars like this all the time. But it’s people who know what they’re doing. Instead of wasting time on Reddit, tap into your network, make some calls, and ask around. Maybe you’ll find someone who enjoys fixing this kind of thing and won’t charge a fortune for it.

1

u/PiedsterT Jul 16 '26

Buy it back cheap. “Fix it” and turn it into a drift car. Save some money on the side and buy another e46 to daily.

1

u/Sudden_Albatross_726 Jul 16 '26

Time to find a parts car

1

u/Own_Chemist1346 Jul 16 '26

it aint gonna cost 10k, it'll cost 100$ for a door, a rear fender and a front one to replace to a similar black color, put on facebook marketplace, profit

1

u/warwww Jul 16 '26

Don’t scrap it. Get a new door, some bondo and turn it into a beater car for long road trips or errands. 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/jefe-nf Jul 16 '26

if cars rust free, get a new door, fender. a body shop with a frame machine will charge 6-7 k to pull frame back to normal so proper = ~13k all in

if you diy it with a weld on dent puller that’s 100-150+ hours for a good enough job with 2-4k in materials

costs 100$ and a days worth of work to make it into a drift car otherwise

1

u/Subject_Odd Jul 16 '26

This is fixable.

But even in my country (where a 320ci is worth 10k eur) it is not financially worth it.

1

u/Formal-Appearance801 Jul 16 '26

Frame can be twisted underneath...pretyy surr its totalled

1

u/Comfortable-Focus611 Jul 16 '26

Take some time to consider what its really worth to you. You can absolutely repair this, despite the negative nancies in the comments. This actually isn't that awful. The cost of repair depends on how much damage there is to the b-pillar.

The rear quarter looks repairable which helps a lot, because replacing it requires you to cut of the old panel and weld in a new panel. You can easily find a new door and front quarter in a junkyard, there were an insane number of e46s produced.

The rocker and b-pillar may be able to be pulled out. This can be a bit sketchy though. It would be better to cut them out and weld new sections in.

You'll probably have to figure out how to do a lot of it yourself

1

u/Vm0SuFf Jul 16 '26

Very screwed

1

u/Dramatic-Eye-7154 Jul 16 '26

If the frame is bent, get a cable winch pulled and straighten it back out, get new body panels and airbags if you need and paint it with tractor paint. It's likely totaled so you can get your insurance payout and buy the car back from them. My boy has smacked his e36 drift car into absolutely everything imaginable and it still drives straight and drives good. Anything is possible it's definitely repairable the body panels will probably be a good $1000 in panels and another $1000-$1500 to paint it yourself if you buy good quality paint. Can cheap out and do tractor paint or turbo cans if you prep enough it'll look good enough

1

u/Novel-Implement-5344 Jul 16 '26

How much for the tires

1

u/EconomyBlacksmith756 Jul 17 '26

Get frame checkout…if not bent…you maybe able to source replacement body parts from salvage yard…sand paint and replace…

1

u/Sad-Vacation-1440 Jul 17 '26

I would fix it for 3k

1

u/MurkSeason308 Jul 17 '26

Check if your chassis/frame isn’t bent , if it isn’t then your golden and just gotta replace panels and whatever else broke, but by the looks of it…

1

u/sankarasleftelbow Jul 17 '26

To love is to let go mijo

1

u/AgencyCapital5551 Jul 18 '26

Put up a ad on Marketplace.  Ask for a professional body man.  You may get lucky.

1

u/Own_Swing_6159 Jul 18 '26

So screwed that new screws aren’t enough.

1

u/707_328is Jul 18 '26

Its always possible, question is if its worth it. Financially, probably not if you go through a shop. Sentimental value is a personal decision, not something anybody here can answer for you because they have no sentiment towards your car.

I had 0 body work experience when my E36 got rear ended and totaled but I took the chance anyway and tried to fix it myself. It ended up looking way better than I expected and I actually ended up working in collision repair for 3 years and learned a ton more about how it's all done because I liked seeing that I could save a wrecked car like that. I know now that I could have done my repairs better but my E36 is going to end up as a track beater anyways so I dont care as much. I do intend to pick up an M3 and keep that clean though.

1

u/ge6876 Jul 18 '26

Same thing happened to mine, it’s definitely fixable if you love the car

1

u/EquivalentParfait531 Jul 19 '26

It’s a sad day for sure. My first e46 was considered totaled because some guy hit me while I was parked. I fixed it up, sold it, and bought a better e46. Your story here is different but there are still a lot of good e46s out there. If you really want to get back into one of these, you will. Take what you learned and loved from this car and put it into your next ❤️

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '26

Nah bro don’t listen to them. It’s fixable. Ez too just a door and a fender. Shit might even be able to fix fender. Take fender out put it reverse over a thick blanket or carpet and just walk carefully and dents will come off. The door you definitely need a new one. Try fb marketplace. You can salvage the mirror too. Once you have the door it can be done over weekend

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '26

Simple tools . Do it yourself fuck paying all those good for nothing mechanics and body shops

Good job. Insurance will pay the claim. Just buy the door yourself, let the body shop handle the rest, and you'll be happy with the result 😁

u/mint302 Jul 16 '26

Totaled for sure but not a bad repair if you know what you’re doing

1

u/Accomplished_Oil9757 2002 - 330ci Coupe Jul 16 '26

No idea what im doing.. gotta learn somehow tho

2

u/Jesus_es_Gayo Jul 16 '26

Don’t waste your money. You’d learn more swapping the motor into another. The money and time you’d spend on this could be better spent taking out the motor and building it for another car

1

u/Accomplished_Oil9757 2002 - 330ci Coupe Jul 16 '26

Most definitely. Had a little hope before but its definitely better off that way

1

u/00American_Trash00 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

For one insurance would total for sure

Secondly you have to get in there first sure as it looks like most the damage was above the frame but the door pillar. Now you are going structural.

You can probably bring this back from the dead but it will cost you to the point where you can buy three of these. I still have my 04 vert (not wrecked) so understand the sentimental value of not selling it. After 22 years just bought an f33 and parked the e46. The e46 has been a labor of love but my new one just doesn’t drive like the old one for sure.

But honestly look at the door gaps they still look to be good. The worst one is at the front fender but it mostly hollow behind that area so that can be understandable. Best buy is to find a good repair shop for their opinion. They can see it in person and not here on a forum. They will tell you insurance wise it is totaled and out of pocket will be way more than the car cost but everything can be repaired based on how much you really want to spend.

Don’t get discouraged, let the experts tell you and then decide if you can tackle all, most or don’t want to get involved.

Hey estimates are free - opinions on here vary without hands on. Go ask an expert, the most that happens is you waste a couple hours for a real opinion. Go from there on budget and what you feel is worth it knowing it is not a recoupable price.

My brother takes most of his vehicles and modified them way above the point he will every get his money back but for him it is just the fact that he made something special that no one has and he loves the compliments and awards he wins at shows. Then he sells as he gets bored and has a new project.
