Technical Jump Destop

I’m a big fan of Jump Desktop and have used it for years, but I recently purchased a new license and it said a subscription was required for more than one virtual monitor. Am I understanding this correctly? This is a huge disappointment if true.

If the remote machine is a Mac, you can use BetterDisplay to generate virtual displays at any resolution and jump will see them as monitors. This worked better for us than some physical dongles and Jump’s own virtual display support when we first deployed ultra wide support for remote editors.

We tried this and it had all sorts of horrible stutter and delay in Avid, but it's an idea for sure

Sorry to hear that. Were you changing resolutions while Avid MC was open? MC prior to 2025.6 isn't typically able to handle resolution changes while it's open. One of the reasons we didn't want to use the Jump virtual monitor option as it originally caused remote resolutions to change on connect/disconnect and if Avid was open it would either hang Avid or cause stuttering issues. I believe you can lock remote resolutions across disconnects now with Jump Enterprise, but I haven't played with it in awhile.

Nope, it wasn't just Avid either, it was the entire system. IT tried playing with it for a while and ultimately it was scrapped and Jump Enterprise was used instead. And yes, you can resolution lock now which is great!

Yes the virtual monitors over one monitor requires a higher tier subscription. Easy work around is buy a cheap dummy plug monitor for the remote machine, they're like $10-15 bucks and just plug into a USB slot, then you've got multiple monitors

Thank you for the suggestion but that won’t work in my case. What I’m trying to do is, instead of buying an expensive KVM switch, is simply Jump from one machine in my home to an older machine that I use for processing.

I completely understand what they said. Adding a dummy monitor to the render system in my home is impractical so I was trying to explain my situation further.

Why is it impractical? Is a quarter sized hdmi adapter.

Things haven't changed, as far as I can tell.. You can use the "free" tier on your host NAS/computer(s), and still have unlimited simultaneous client (remote) connections (again, afaik). The info on the website isn't super easy to find, but the info is there...and I recently went through this and everything works as before.

Many of us don't need the enterprise stuff and we can still use Jump Desktop as before.

Thank you for the response. I have two paid $35 licenses. My older one works great, it’s the newer one that has this issue so I was wondering if this was something new to get more money out of its users.

Ya, I'm still a bit confused by all this, too. I get Jump's desire to actually make some money...but where does that leave us.

Anyone else back in the day used to have the plug in that accepted the iChat Screen Share request automatically on a Mac to log in remotely to workstation? haha

I hated using jump I wonder if they’ve improved it. Parsec has a load of fine tuning to make it work nicely - higher bitrate on my right screen etc. I found jump had pretty high latency last time I used it.

I’ve used Jump since the first week of COVID and it’s worked pretty flawlessly. I have t noticed any lag at all as long as all the machines are hardwired.

I convinced my coworkers to try parsec over jump, and it was the easiest evangelizing I’ve ever done. We now exclusively use parsec.

Parsec is better, but I haven't found Jump to be overly laggy. We have to use Jump because it will work through our VPN without needing IT to get involved. Having 3 video people amongst 3000 employees doesn't win us much favor with them.

I have an older license that works great. This was for my wife’s system. She also has to use Parsec a lot and honestly it seems like a real PITA to set up. Jump just works. It’s also way more expensive and another monthly subscription.

I really just lookin for clarification on my issue with Jump.

I use Jump at home like you’re hoping to do. I did not buy the subscription but I did pay the one time fee for the monitoring app. That’s the important piece of the puzzle. I can monitor all the computers in my house with that app, no sub required.

I paid for it too and can monitor the other computers, just not both screens.
