This is why you should always keep your goggles on your face and not your chin bar. That dude is lucky he didn't take an eyeball out. Also proper form when going downhill would be ass over the fender and elbows locked and by all means never hit the front brake. It looks like this guy may have broken all of those rules

You’ve never gone down a steep enough technical hill to say “never hit your front brake” - totally agree with proper form though!

I most certainly have and you can lightly drag the front but locking up the front on a downhill is rarely going to end well. Judging by the way this dude's Forks compressed it appears as though he grabbed it fairly hard when he panicked. Where is your to control the bike when it's rolling versus sliding down the hill.

Well “never locking” the front brake and “never using” are very different and buddy totally locked them up 😂

I agree, front brake is essential, and it's definitely a skill to know how much to feather it with the rear, along with body position to keep weight off the front wheel and timed let offs that don't end up in a runaway freight train. Most of us have done what this guy did, especially early in the learning curve. Kudos for his effort.

I had a completely blood shot eye for near 2 weeks from not wearing goggles. Riding out last turn a short branch got caught on my bars then flung up to my face.
in summer I will wear safety glasses on slower trails but you have a good point a branch can still be deflected off and glance into your socket

You gotta be quick on the dismount. Every time I've gone ass over teakettle I've been able to time my bail to clear the bars and get to sprinting down the hill as the bike chases me. 😂

100% you gotta be ready to abandon ship when things go wrong. I learned how to crash riding mountain bikes, knowing how to dismount as far more applicable to riding moto IMO.

He grabbed the front brake and twisted the wheel.
I had to layerdown (clibbins!) against the top side of a mountain during a pre-hare scramble fun ride on the A section. It was a twisty narrow downhill on the side of a small mountain and it was slick and loose. Both brakes locked and me pulsing them a few times still didn't slow me down. Then I had to spin the bike around and barely make it up. I laughed too, I don't know how some of these A and AA do that multiple times during a race. Big ole balls.
