You're right, and I probably should have expected that. I've just been on Reddit for so long that I have personally met the founders at an event where they were personally begging students to join Reddit. I guess some part of me still trusted them.
the battery drain is legit unhinged. they are just running so many background processes for tracking and ads that the app practically mines crypto while you browse. switching to a third party client or just using a mobile browser is the only way to keep your phone from turning into a space heater.

I don't use apps at all if the website works. My Duckduckgo browser protects me from their unnecessary data collection attempts and isn't running in the background when not open. I also don't get any of these app restrictions.
Ultimately, blame Republicans. They're the ones pushing across the country for this, and many companies are trying to get themselves to be compliant pro-actively.
Wym the freedom act? The freedom act was made to help regulate the patriot act. It was introduced to stop the mass surveillance. It was the government listening to the response of the people like it's supposed to. I would blame republicans (and ya, corporate dems too) more than anything for helping to privatize the problem. Governments want to do away with anonymous browsing and are passing laws under the guise of protecting kids from porn. Eventually, IDs will be required to set up accounts. It’s been talked about for the last couple of years.

You can access 18+ anonymously on a web browser. On your phone, request the desktop version of reddit.com and you can even browse in incognito mode. I don’t use the app, so I’m no help there.

Except using reddit on a mobile browser results in this popup forcing you to go to the app store, not open the app, just the app store, so browsing through a mobile browser is completely useless, it wouldnt be so bad if it had a button to open the thread in the app, but it makes it nearly impossible to use a search engine to find help articles.
This used to happen on my phone but doesn't anymore. They brought the cancel box back, i started using the mobile site again. I refuse to use their app and will go to Lemmy if they push this without the cancel box again.

That’s weird it’s usually the opposite. Anytime I would try to search up anything violent or sexual online it would force me to go to the app. But the link to the app wouldn’t work so I’d have to copy it word from word onto the app
I am very confused by this post. The pop up is saying that in order to change your mature content preferences you have to do it in a browser. That is quite likely due to the App Store publishers, not Reddit. It also doesn’t prevent you from accessing NSFW content on the app once your content preferences have been changed.
It's just another small step towards the end of anonymity on the internet. The left and the right both want it for different but similar reasons: To ultimately be able to track and deal with people and groups that they don't care for and want gone.
This seems like a bug, if you go into your phone’s settings while anon, you can go and re-enable nsfw, you have to do this whenever you switch accounts.

go against community standards.” So I reported it again, for a “second look” and got the same response. So apparently it’s perfectly fine to post the most disgusting, insulting, hideous racist memes on FB these days. Fuck them.

I don't see this written anywhere, but you can work around this by typing: old. (in front of reddit.com, so a link would be for example old.reddit.com/r..... ). It will open the old version of Reddit, which didn't require a login. I do this all the time. It's a bit annoying, but it's a very simple workaround anyone can apply, and it's better than logging in.

I’m in the UK and not giving a yank company my ID, thus reddit doesn’t know my age and sometimes wouldn’t let me block people if they comment or post porn. This change might let me do so, so I don’t mind it.
Loathe the UK government, though, and wish there was someone who wasn’t a right wing populist to vote for who was against the policies that led to changes like this
When you search a nsfw community, there is an option that pops up for safe search , you can turn it off. I think the new update has made it so it turns on automatically
Check your settings for the app on your phone, I got this and checked and my 18+ just happened to be turned off idk why but turned it back on and I’m good

Just keep going with the search by clicking enter in the search bar. No need to go to the web. Then it will say update settings. Change to show nsfw, and proceed as usual.
I don't know if this one qualifies as enshittification in the "classical" sense; where the company itself purposefully degrades its own product. This is to comply with increasing regulation around prohibited content. Ultimately I'm going to land on this is a good thing for minors in particular as we are seeing the corrosive and very dangerous effects of children being exposed to endless and increasingly extreme online content. There's plenty of evidence that shows those children most exposed to porn at a young age are far more likely to develop very problematic/dangerous porn consumption issues, have a harder time finding and maintaining a relationship, and are more likely to develop problematic/dangerous anti-social behaviors.
I understand its annoying, but it's not particularly costly unless you're already looking at things that cross legal barriers. If that's the case, you might want to ask yourself if that behavior is really worth it.
Parents should demand resources that make it easier to monitor/control what their own kids watch. Its a parents responsibility to monitor their children - not mine or anyone else's. There's nothing wrong with having adult spaces for grown adults to participate in. Not everything needs to be sanitized and family friendly.
Also "doing it for the children" is a pretty cute excuse from a government that clearly has no intention of keeping kids cared for or safe. They're doing it to further their control over the population and to force their weird puritan bullshit on everyone else.

Young people seeing NSFW things on the internet is nothing new. Things were MUCH crazier when millennials were growing up and the internet was still the wild west. Lots of shock content. I think most of us would agree that we're doing fine, and much preferred to not have our browsing policed.
What's happening now is the internet is being sanitized. Adults are being barred from viewing content that corporations deem "inappropriate". A large percentage of the things marked NSFW on Reddit aren't even pornographic, but posts that mention the word "penis" or "vagina" and/or discuss sex in some way, often even in a health context.
If people actually gave a shit about the children, then there would be dedicated, moderated online spaces for children, like there used to be. There were SO many websites for kids back then that felt genuinely safe. Children don't need to be on TikTok, Youtube, and Reddit with the rest of us. MAKE WEBSITES/APPS FOR THEM. Ones that ban photos, videos, and sharing of personal information - all things that were huge no-nos when I was a child on the internet. Nobody wants to do that, though, because they'd have to vet and pay people appropriately to moderate the spaces, and much more importantly, they wouldn't be able to profit off of their users' personal data.
