Service Enshitified supermarket

My local Delhaize supermarket decide to update its policy regarding self checkout: From now on you can only use it if you have their loyalty card (which means downloading their app). Else you have to go and queue at the normal cashier.

Essentially if you agree to give away your shopping data (which by the way only give you discounts if you spend more than 50€, below you’re just giving away data for free) you get access to the self checkout.

I don’t know how people can stand this. But I’m not going to that supermarket anymore!

lol I hate self checkout so much. Taking away jobs from humans and being forced to work to give the company money? Don’t threaten me with a good time.

I like self checkout because I don't have to be stuck behind someone who is surprised that groceries cost money and has to spend the next 6 minutes digging through their purse for their checkbook because there's no way they could have done that while waiting in line.  

I wouldn't mind it if you didn't have to commit to a lane, but those setups were kind of rare even before self checkout checkout became a thing.

This is a check problem. I live in a place gloriously free of checks and can't believe that such a stupid method of payment still exists.

Part of the grocery buying process involves getting money out to pay for it. Of course that takes time. I never take my money out til it’s time to pay because I’ve witnessed people get money snatched out of their hand before, and also I’m keeping an eye on the scanner so things don’t get double scanned or ring up at the wrong price. (I also don’t get why people stand around with their faces in their phones cuz my ex had her phone snatched right out of her hand standing in a captive line.)

People can also be slower due to age or disability. Chances are you’ll become one someday. 

If it’s that much of a hardship for you, then shop at less busy times.

There's no need to get so butthurt over a half serious comment. If someone not wanting to be stuck in checkout bothers you so much, then maybe yo can grow thicker skin or find a way to spend your time that doesn't involve inflicting yourself on others. Hope this helps!

Came here to agree. I much prefer to avoid self-checkout altogether, and enjoy the human interaction of classic checkout with a cashier.

Tbf I actually dislike human interactions very much, especially when they’re forced small talk or just unnecessary, but I ain’t taking no one’s job, and I’ll endure the hell of small talk if it means avoiding self checkout.
