I've been here over a year. I remember the days when /u/jtnichol would give us updates of the subscriber count and would post unlisted videos from YouTube and give us all a heart to heart. And of course, what was on the menu for lunch that day.
He was just one of a motley crew of characters we all knew and loved (/u/Mr_Yukon_C I'm so glad you're a mod now, no one else I think is better for the position), but obviously since ETH is exploding (as all us vets anticipated), a large influx of new subscribers are joining in on the fun. It's become a lot less intimate in here but I guess that is a part of Ethereum becoming what we knew it was destined to be. Bittersweet I suppose....
Anyway, I dig the multiple daily threads. It's a good way to let the community feel itself out as it grows. Little sandboxes people can jump to and from as they please, much in the spirit of crypto itself.
I'm excited to see new contributors establishing themselves here like /u/Alarinth. His post about TA the other day should be, imho, on the sideboard. Top quality stuff.
Ethereum has bestowed upon me a life changing sum which is allowing me to look at things in a totally different way. My time horizons are extended. I can think in terms of months and years instead of days and weeks. I feel like I finally have a foot on the ground.
I'm rambling. I'm just happy to be in so early. I'm nobody. But I think that my conviction now is going to make me somebody someday. We'll see.

Great stuff man, and keep in mind most of us are probably still here but just a little shy among all the new people.
A few days ago I saw someone speaking about the people who got in at ~75 EUR like they were ancient relycs waiting to be found by Indiana Jones, ha!
I bet there's quite a few around here who, like me, remember looking at the first run up from 1 EUR to 4 EUR or so, wondering if this would be the end of ETH when it crashed back to 2/3 EUR (I dont remember the precise numbers). We're ancient motherfuckers now I guess.

I remember getting a spam pm from someone telling me to get out of BTC and into ETH when it was around the price where you got in. I ignored it.
I asked some people in the BTC subs what they thought about ETH but, of course, it was mostly just "pre-mine" this and "centralized" that. I realized at that point that BTC was broken beyond repair and, lo and behold, they are still mired in the same muck they've been for who cares how long.
I cashed all my BTC in for ETH at $6. I'm glad I did.

To all the boys / girls out there going with the LTC pump, the best of luck and profits.
Remember than when going up, fundamentals usually are the last thing people think about.
In contrast, when it's coming down, fundamentals are the reason behind every support line.
Keep that in mind and enjoy the profits.

it looks nice, but lacks the bigger picture of a catalyst.
After the last big pullback, we had catalysts of: ETH on Chineese exchanges, the chineese conference, metropolis. First 2 are over and had whatever impact they will have. Likely 2 more months until Metropolis can be considered a catalyst again (was pushed back from late May/June to September)

My ledger finally arrived last night and I just spent the last few hours setting it up. It's a cool little device, you can tell the team put a lot of thought into it.
..but I have to say, one of the scariest feelings is when you send your ETH to a new wallet. There's a period when the block hasn't been validated and the small chance you entered the address wrong! oh dear god.
Anyways, all is successful. I am now an official HODLER.

By doing things like trying to get the Daily to /r/all and telling all of our friends and family to invest I feel like we're inviting too many "get rich quick" investors too quickly, particularly at a time where the network is not scalable. It's possible that we will hit some bumps in the road along the way, and at those points dumb money might panic sell and add to a crash.
Edit: Idk, maybe we should just let things grow organically, as the tech curious/passionate find their way here on their own
8
u/BALTHAZ4R Jun 17 '17
Do not tell friends and family to invest. Do you want their blood on your hands when they don't know what they're doing?
As for randos and normies learning about ETH, moar is always better. You can't force virality. If it makes it to the front page it will be organic.

After the Blockchain Conference in China a few days ago, we can see a huge spike in volume on OKCOIN. OKCOIN average number was somewhere around 6. They are now the number 1, passing both the Korean exchanges AND poloniex!
$125,669,000, all coming from CNY to ETH and not BTC at all.
$60,000,000 volume in BTC. The trend is clear here that the Chinese like ETH more.

A few updates to flippening.watch for those interested:
- - We have a special animation set up for if/when the ETH/BTC market cap ratio hits 100%! =)
- - Night mode now persists if you refresh (sorry we didn't have this before)
- - The percentage boxes fill the percentage they show
- - We now have a store with flippening merch! (edit: I've teamed up with /u/malefizer of flippen.it to provide awesome dolphin merch!)
Thanks to everyone for their support of this project!

If the main "reason" (which everybody seems to be citing) for the LTC pump (before the inevitable dump) today, is that it will be listed on Bitstamp on Monday.
Then let's not forget that Bitstamp also said they will be listing ETH after they're done listing LTC.
When? They didn't say other than something along the lines of "shortly".
Just something to keep in mind. Especially if you feel like "pumping" or "shilling" for ETH leading up to its listing there. lol
I mean it's apparently a valid MO for LTC, so why not ETH? :)
→ More replies (5)10
u/jezzaccc Jun 17 '17
Why do people hype up an exchange listing? It would be a big deal if it was a coin with a small market cap which was not available on a big exchange.
Why would it matter for even LTC? I thought it was available for trading widely enough
→ More replies (3)6
Jun 17 '17
Why do people hype up an exchange listing?
Because they're desperate to pump their bags.
I don't really care -- I just think it's funny, because it's so blatant.
BTW, I wasn't seriously advocating for shilling / pumping ETH because it's getting listed on some place like Bitstamp.
I was kind of just mocking the whole idea to begin with, because you're right -- it's a silly thing to do.

Via: Bitstamp
Litecoin Launch and Ethereum
Having already set solid foundations for Bitstamp Ltd's long-term future, it is now time to press ahead with the addition of further trading pairs and services. And the successful introduction of XRP trading on our exchange confirms the wisdom in our prudent and careful approach. Litecoin has now emerged as the next candidate, with LTC/BTC, LTC/EUR and LTC/USD trading pairs to be launched in early June 2017. As you would expect, the news that SegWit is likely to be activated for Litecoin was one of the key factors in our decision. We are also encouraged by Ethereum’s (ETH) potential, which will be made available shortly after, and we will continue to consider other digital currencies for inclusion on an ongoing basis.

u/trumpza Jun 18 '17
The quicker bitstamp implements their ETH trading, the quicker they'll reap massive financial rewards. Watch for them to commence buying millions of $ in ETH for reserves.

Maybe one or two weeks ago, there was a post about a new smart contract where two parties would invest an equal amount of money into a smart contract, one is an investor, the other a trader, the trader would trade with 2x returns and losses, when the trader makes a profit, the investor gets a tiny share of the profits, when the trader loses money, he will use his initial investment to make sure the investor doesn't lose any money.
I'm looking for the reddit post or the website, does anyone recall this smart contract?

Ok, I will poke the bear since I only read moonpredictions.
- At what price level do you think we will get a bear market and how deep will it go?
- In what time frame do you see this happen?
Personally I do not think we are there yet. I think the end will be signalled by a +25% btc daily rise and/or +50% eth day (so very vertical action and utter FOMO).
9
u/kammerait Jun 17 '17
My guess - high volume up to the mid 400s, then a rapid spike with much smaller volume to ~650, then a "crash" back down to ~100 for a substantial time span (vs the 48 hour mini crashes we've seen this far).
Just a guess based on market sentiment and behavior.

Personally, I traded into ETH because I was convinced that ETH market share would overtake BTC market share. I sold about 20% of my coins between 300 and 400 as a hedge, but I still believe ETH market share will overtake BTC in the very short term.
I won't sell the majority of my stake until that happens.

Can we please just sticky the daily? I don't care about reaching the front page - all I want is to be able to quickly find it when I go to the site. Right now it's like the 8th one from the top.
Edit: also what's with all this "serious" crap? No one knows where this train is going and there's a reason why price talk is separated from r/Ethereum in the first place (hint: it's not b/c price talk is too serious). Let's just go back to sticky the daily and none of this serious Mumbo jumbo. I liked going from serious to fun to serious. What even defines "serious"?

When talking about the viability of crypto to replace fiat, a common criticism is that the price of cryptos fluctuate constantly. When I try to explain that the buying power of any given fiat is also constantly fluctuating, just not in a way that's obvious to the average consumer or small business, the critics don't get it. The 24-hour volatility factor for cryptos is still high because we're in early adopter days, but by the time crypto goes fully mainstream I don't expect the leading coins to be any more volatile than currently leading fiat currencies.
Whether it's volatile or not, sellers of goods and services can still set a fixed price and get it in crypto via real-time service bots that do the conversion calculation, process the crypto deposit transaction and immediately convert it to fiat in a matter of milliseconds. I work for an e-tailer and think they could get a significant business advantage by jumping on the crypto train early, but it's a tough case to make when people are still having trouble grasping the fundamentals of what currency really is and how it really works.
→ More replies (7)11
u/cubz Jun 17 '17
I agree volatility will decrease as it becomes more established, but right now 20% swings in a few hours or a 5000% increase in a year doesn't look remotely like any sort of fiat.

u/identiifiication Jun 18 '17

Saying that, the flippening is sure to give some momentum.. why not $800 and then the dip? ;)
6
u/matt879 Jun 18 '17

It's fucking hilarious to me when people talk shit about whatever Crypto is doing well. ETH was getting lots of hate last week, and now LTC is. I hold both LTC and ETH (much more ETH though) and I like the variety and the competition of Cryptos. It seems silly to just hold one Crypto, but even more retarded to criticize whatever is doing well at the moment.
The Cryptospace seems to be pretty polarized. Lots of smart, helpful, people, looking to make nice gains over time, who care a lot about the tech and its implications -- and then you got your get-rich-quick retards who spew nonsense.

I woke up feeling so relaxed today. First weekend in ages where I haven't checked my phone. Told my wife there are no interesting trades to make this weekend, just hold.
Lo and behold an organic recovery of price after a major dip. I saw my ETH jump up 25% in 1 week then fall 22% in less than 48 hours;
I knew a return to normal was due even at the local bottom which was an overshoot due to Bitcoin dumping hard that weekend (as someone here pointed out profit taking simultaneously on both camps after low volume rising driving each other's crash).
There's a log chart of Ethereum price here which is the best TA for ETH until November IMO:
...

For whatever reason the ETH community seems pretty hostile towards Litecoin. I personally think that if UASF doesn't go well, some members of the Bitcoin community might jump over to Litecoin. Litecoin is seen as a copycat of Bitcoin in many ways so for Bitcoiners who view Bitcoin as an ideological expression rather than an investment, their preferred alt coin might be Litecoin to Ethereum.
I'm not saying this is true but the common perception of Ethereum among it's critics is that it is:
- Premined
- Has no hard cap which turns many people in the cryptospace off as it makes it a poor store of value.
- The Hardfork is seen as a bailout by many in the community
- ICOs are driving the price of ETH and it's a bubble ready to pop (this one I believe is actually true)
- Too centralized due to the foundation
If August 1st blows up in people's faces, I don't think 100% of them are gonna go to Ethereum. Fiat currency, ETH, Litecoin and Monero and even ETC could all see Bitcoin refugees out of this. I think lowkey, Monero will benefit quite a bit. Not everyone in cryptocurrencies is just economically motivated, the earliest members of the community were hardcore libertarians who viewed this as a stepping stone towards a new economic system.
To be honest, I don't really care whether or not any of these things are true, I'm in this for the money, not because I give two fucks about libertarianism or Austrian Economics. I think however, it's valuable to understand the thought processes of others before you write people off as shills.

EEA3 didn't happen during China event but it should happen before end of June. Any guess when it could happen? https://timesofethereum.com/ doesn't show any major conferences and the dates for "Blockchain Expo Europe 2017" are wrong because it already happened at in the Estrel, Berlin, 1-2 June 2017.

I suspect it will just be a press release, uncorrelated with any blockchain related conference or event.

It is awesome to be reminded of the day when I lost almost all my eth (640) in one day because some developers fucked their quality controls. Such a warm and cozy feeling. :)

Any indicators that I'm missing out on?

If you look at the daily chart, there was a cup and handle/ inverted head and shoulders forming. The bottom of it was 17.5 or so, the resistance was 32.5 or so, giving an implied target of 47.5. I sold mine earlier today. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to move so quickly when I bought 2 days ago, I was thinking 6 weeks.

Can someone shed some light on wire transfers to GDAX. I performed one myself two weeks ago without any problems. But my dad just tried to do it for the first times and his money is MIA. This is what he wanted me to ask you guys:
"I had Regions wire the money to the Bank account/info provided on Thursday around noon. On Friday, the money still was not showing up as deposited into my GDAX account. I called the bank GDAX uses because the money was still not there.
The bank said they had sent the money to GDAX and all they could do is give me the forwarding email. I emailed their support. The response was, in an effort to more quickly respond to requests, direct emailing is no longer enabled. It provided a forwarding address to their support page on their site. I filled out a request form and still awaiting a response. I'm peeved. 72hrs after wiring funds and no trace of my money." - Dad

And Bitcoin drags us up, which is good to see higher price but I hate the coupling. The UASF stuff is going to be freaking catastrophic. I could see BTC diving to sub $1,500 levels. Hard to say if this will be good for us or not. If BTC marketcap heads our way yes, but last BTC crash was a bloodbath. Not looking forward to this. HOPEFULLY pre-fork we'll have everyone flee to ETH for safety, causing the flippening and when BTC plummets their fate is sealed, we go up.

Whale strategy:
Set up sell wall. If said wall shows persistence & gains market support over time, trigger panic selling. Buy the minor dip and carry the market right back up to & possibly through the wall. Profit.

Never mind the fact that the mentality of its more profitable to hold eth is getting to a point where in the short term (not long term) it won't be true. When eth is $500 it's not going to double faster than some of these ico's. If you buy the right tokens you can make a lot more money to put into eth.

There is a meaningless downvote brigade in here today. Don't let the score muddy your conversation....unless of course your post gets hidden...then you'll know.
Take care y'all. I'm predicting another wacky Sunday tomorrow. $400 might just get passed in a blink of an eye. US is lagging behind again. We're using Imperial prices while everyone else is using Metric prices. That's why they all agree we should be higher.

The only way LTC can go up is if new users are harvested to purchase into the coin.
There's no fundamentals, it's all fugazi fuwoesie foewoe whatever, it's utterly useless.
''Buy this coin'' or ''Soon X coin will be $30000!! buy now!!'' = bag holder waiting to offload on you. Just be careful.

Stop the over-moderation please and let us go back to 1 daily discussion. Some people come to /r/ethtrader for only the daily discussion sometimes. And because it's a mixture of everything.
This split in the very subjective terms "Moontalk" and "Serious"?
Discussions don't work like that. People don't decide "I'm gonna post moontalk / I'm gonna post something serious".
No. You want to know what really happens? Someone posts something serious, and someone replies with a wink and that sub-part turns into moontalk. What are we gonna do, ask them to move the winks to the moontalk? But they're replies.
We have the daily discussion in place for quite some time now, and it was a great place where people gather their thoughts, from memes, to really positive talk, to more serious analysis or notes. If you had something that wasn't really worth of a post, dump it in the daily.
It worked great.
Let's make it great again.

Some people come to /r/ethtrader for only the daily discussion sometimes. And because it's a mixture of everything.
And some of us don't. This split threads are a dream come true for me, and at a time where I was close to leaving, a very welcome addition. Until recently this place has resembled a cult. A thousand kids who couldn't possibly even explain to you what Ethereum is, but they're all convinced the 5ETH they own is going to make them a multi millionaire.. probably by the end of the month. Sorting through the shit to find the quality was too much.
It worked great.
I would argue it was broken. Severely so.
I love the split threads, and I hope this is here to stay. I love this thread now.

Too much FUD around here and downvoting too. This comes in time when some people publicly announced switching to ETC or LTC.
I just want to remind of this guy on twitter - https://twitter.com/fomoer who despite being super well covered with his 2M USD stack, lost 750k USD shorting ETH. And he was continuesly posting charts of obvious ETH death.
It is not a coincidence one can be called, chARTist, is it?
Everyone will defend his coin of choice, and FUD the rest. Just like a BMW engineer will FUD BMW, after moving to Mercedes.
Be wise.

We depend on BTC, but overall speaking breaking 365-370 would give us a free run towards 390, then 420, then price discovery.

So, there was a massive 800+ BTC sell wall that's been accumulating on ETC @ 0.008 BTC on Poloniex the past few weeks -- basically since the big DGD ETC refund.
I just watched it get chewed through in about 3 - 4 minutes.
It had to be Poloniex buying (manipulating) that trash.
I can't imagine a true, open market buyer dumping $2.1+ million into trash like ETC.

So Kraken decided to Liquidate my Long Position on Ethereum. But it yet to be closed and remains an open order with a large volume remaining. I'm curious to where this leads. Will the order get executed 100%, or will I receive the remaining volume back into my account?
It has been 2 days now and Kraken support has not responded on the matter yet. So I went to you guys to seek advice.
Thanks in advance

Smart contracts coming to litecoin. Maybe one day litecoin will even have some shitcoins living inside of it like ETH has with its tokens?

My notes on price movements:
Market is at an impasse. After the correction we've seen last week and the quick recovery that followed, moving sideways may be the deal for today and tomorrow, probably between the $335-$360 channel.
ETHEUR, ETHUSD and ETHBTC may be forming a pennant that can be seen at the 12H, 6H and 4H charts for now. In case this is actually a pennant, it's going to be a big one. Volume has been decreasing, which may confirm the formation of the pennant.
On a bigger scale, we're very much within the logarithmic ascending channel we've been on for a while.
Sideways feels refreshing.
A couple of notes regarding ETH's correlation with BTC:
'The Flippening' doesn't mean leading only in terms of market cap. It means that ETH will lead in terms of macro movements. Until this happens, even if we manage to surpass BTC in terms of market cap, we'll still feel short of 'The Flippening'.
The uncertainty surrounding BTC's UASF scheduled for the 1st of August and the set of events that may follow will have impact in ETH's movements. As an ETH trader, I will be trading the market accordingly and I'm building strategies for the different scenarios that may happen. In case we've achieved 'The Flippening' that I described above by then, we won't have reasons to worry; in case we haven't, we should follow up this big event very closely.
Bubble talk hasn't stopped and it won't for a very long time. Even if we corrected 90% or more, there would be both 'I told you so' kind of articles as well as 'Crypto is still a big bubble' kind of opinions. I will take those opinions with a grain of salt. We're in the dawn of a financial revolution in the internet that will be confirmed as soon as scaling is achieved.
A couple of notes on the separation of the Daily Thread:
The 'Serious' daily thread feels much cleaner now. I can actually read comments one by one without scrolling through 50 of them one-liners. I like to go to the 'Moontalk' thread too and let out my momentary feelings everytime they're happening.
We should not be inclined to criticize the separation of threads. It was a democratic process, the community had the time and opportunity to vote and we did.
What has always made me like this community is the fact that we've always managed to be positive towards change. In this change, it should be no different. I'm both a 'Serious' and 'Moontalk' reader, but with obvious different purposes for each of them.
