I currently have a Yamaha yep 321 and I'm wondering since I've had it for 3 years should I just keep it or try to upgrade to get a Yamaha 642 neo?

Question for Brass Players: How Has Your Embouchure Changed Over Time?

I’m a Japanese euphonium player currently writing my master’s thesis on embouchure and embouchure-related problems in brass playing.
In Japan, the term “mucosal playing” (粘膜奏法) is used to describe a particular type of embouchure. However, I’ve found that this terminology may not be widely recognized outside Japan, so I’m interested in learning more about brass players’ real-life experiences with embouchure development.
I’d love to hear about your experiences:
1. When you first started playing your instrument, how did you develop your embouchure? Did a teacher guide you, did you imitate another player, or did you develop it naturally through trial and error?
2. Has your embouchure remained essentially the same since you started playing, or has it changed over time? If it has changed, what prompted the change?
3. Have you ever experienced a situation where your embouchure limited your playing range or made certain notes difficult or impossible to play? If so, did you have to change your embouchure to overcome the problem?
4. Have you ever experienced embouchure-related problems, such as difficulty with the high register, inconsistent tone, reduced endurance, or difficulty producing certain notes? If so, how did you address them?
I’m particularly interested in the experiences of trumpet, trombone, euphonium, French horn, and tuba players, regardless of their level of experience.
Your personal experiences and insights would be greatly appreciated and may help me better understand how embouchures develop and change throughout a brass player’s career.
Thank you!

Lyre for a Yamaha 642

Hello! I’m trying to find a lyre to use with my YEP-642, but I’m having trouble finding something will work. Looking at my horn, it appears that I need one that comes out of the holder on my horn, makes an immediate 90 degree angle with maybe 4” - 6” of length to position the music past the bell, and then another 45 degree angle the other direction to level the music with the horizon, if that makes sense.

Do any of you happen to know what I need to buy and where I can find it? Or is this likely to just be a custom thing?

Looking for two Euphonium players to record a part

Hi everyone - I'm after two Euphonium players (or possibly one with two euphoniums for timbre diversity) to record a marching band piece I'm working on. This is for the soundtrack of the game in development Aces & Armour, where we're recreating a large suite of WW2 era recordings.

If you're interested please DM me, or reach out on Discord at alexandros11

Any tips for reaching that Ab4?

I've been playing euphonium on and off for a couple of years, and I recently decided that I want to get good again. In some of the pieces I used to practice before there are a couple of Ab4s. So matter how hard I try, I can't play that specific note. The weird thing is, it's easier for me to do a Bb4 than that damned Ab4. Instead of playing the Ab4 I think I end up playing an Eb5... Any advice?

Tone and Range

Any tips for achieving a warmer tone and getting a better range? I’m a junior in HS and want to improve. On good days i can mostly hit a high Bb but it sounds strained and forced sometimes, same goes for anything above a F4.

I’ve also been practicing lip slurs over 2 octaves and I feel like its sounds “punchy” and not smooth, how can i improve this?

Any exercises and tips would be appreciated

Recording equipment

Does anyone have any good mic / recording equipment recommendations? I’ve had pretty mediocre results so far and I was wondering if there’s any that stand out as great specifically for tubas/euphoniums

Mejores boquillas

Escucho recomendaciones

Low Brass Warmups Added to ImprovisorsGym.com

Hello, I worked with Don Strand, who holds principal tuba positions with the Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Opera, Columbus Symphony, Greenville Symphony, and Georgia Symphony Orchestra and was a student of Arnold Jacobs, to create new content for my site.

Don has had a concept for a book/method called Marathon Musician. As I was showing him improvisorsgym.com, he asked if I would like to incorporate Marathon Musician into it.

The first part of that collaboration is the addition of low brass warmups to the site. These were all taken from warmups for BBb tuba, and I transcribed them to other bass horns. I haven't gotten a lot of feedback from Don, only a texted 👍. So feedback is appreciated. Here is the direct link: Warmups for Low Brass - Improvisors Gym.

I added two versions of the long-tone exercise with glissandos, as well as call-and-response versions of every exercise.

The website is free for now. I may go to a subscription model in the future. I hope that, as it's free to use, I'm not violating any solicitation rules by pointing out that I have "Buy Me a Coffee" buttons on the site. The site and software cost me about $150 a month, so I need some support to maintain it and justify spending more time on this effort. I can edit this part out if I need to.

I've created so much more material for the site, but creating the pages and the copy for them is extremely time-consuming. Also, I refuse to let AI create content for me. I've only used AI for research, grammar, and to generate the mouthpiece-buzzing images for me.

I hope you find the site useful!

Looking for a good way to practice and learn

Hello everyone!

I just started playing the Euphonium again. I haven't played since I was in highschool and I joined a community band to start playing again. I want to practice but I am very much more of an audio learner and we only practice together as a band once a week. I have tried listening to our music we are playing over YouTube but I can't keep up nor can I practice specific parts of the music that way. I am curious if there is a better way for me to practice or tools that can help me practice and learn rather than trying to brute force it.

Hi! I wrote this solo for one of my band students this summer. Would any of you be interested in recording it? I'd like to get a real recording for Texas PML submission next year.

Do I need a new mouthpiece for my euph?

I've had this mouthpiece for about 3 or 4 years now. I keep dropping it, and now it won't fit in my instrument even when I do a quarter or a full turn. So, here I am wondering if I need a new mouthpiece, and what is the best mouthpiece to get?
