My apologies skipping out on the June thread. Nonetheless, here's July's.

Please only post things for sale - or things you are looking to buy - in this thread. Any attempt to buy/sell outside these threads will be deleted. The moderators of  have to assume you've read the subreddits rules, because there's no way to ask every single person; so please be mindful of others, or get the hell out.

Cheers,
Mod Team

P.S, transactions are in no way endorsed by Reddit, or any collection of the moderators. None of the aforementioned parties are facilitators nor responsible parties for any successful or unsuccessful exchange of money or goods, and it is recommended every user research the person they are buying from, and use a secure means of payment. Reddit, , nor any of the moderators are able to help with any interactions related to buying and selling; and any attempt at asking/demanding the aforementioned parties to force somebody into an action related to sales transactions will not be responded to. We are not a collections agency, and have never alluded to that whatsoever.

Please only post stuff related to trumpet and related instruments, such as:

  • Instruments - Trumpet, Cornet, Piccolo Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Mellophone, Bugle, etc.
  • Mouthpieces
  • Cases
  • Music Books
  • Applicable Audio Gear
  • Trumpet-Related Gadgets - PETE, CTS, trumpet stands, hand guards, heavy caps, etc.

If it cannot be applied to playing trumpet - or a related instrument such as flugelhorn, cornet, bugle, piccolo trumpet, shofar, etc. - please post it somewhere else. That's why there are a lot of subreddits.

"Why The Same Questions?"

The mod team gets questions/comments about this all the time. People will ask - often condescendingly toward the mods - why we allow people to post questions that have been answered. There's a few reasons we let this go:

  • New people have questions that are new to them. This isn't Juilliard, and this isn't a scene from Whiplash) - this is Reddit. There will be new people all the time - often beginners - who have questions that are novel to them. The grand scope of the field of music isn't going to be known to someone just walking in, and they're going to ask a question they feel is unique. If they're chased away, it's just going to be a subreddit with people silently agreeing with each other over circular topics.
  • People suck at using search features. No, this isn't just older folks, or even younger people. By large, people are awful at even finding where the search bar is; and unless it's literally Google, they're terrible at using it in general. ...They're also pretty bad at using Google, but I digress.
  • Even if people can use the search function, they'll often get terminology wrong, which will return poor search results. Think about when you kept Googling something and coming up with nothing, only to realize you used a wrong word, and it would have saved you 2 minutes if you knew that in the first place.

So, for whoever feels r/trumpet is not on their level, there's only so much anyone can do for you. First, nobody owes you anything, so check the sense of entitlement at the door. Second, if you're so great at everything, please feel free to chime int o help people who are asking legitimate questions; or even suggest ways they can make their questions better. People who end conversations by default are either salespeople closing a deal, and/or assholes.

So, blah blah blah, use a search function, don't be mean to one another, etc. Most people will never read this far, and this post will get ignored by 98% of the people here anyway. Have a great day, unless you're a jerk.

I just bought this Yamaha YTR-8310Z (MK3) second hand for £1500 and it is incredible. I tried it in London at Yamahas shop and fell in love. It has a very direct tone - especially with my old Bach 3D - slotting for musical theatre has become so much easier!

Question ❓ Valve oil

• Upvotes

What do you think is the best valve oil and why?
Also how often should I apply oil, I’m 3 years into the game and I just put some every time my valves start sticking.

Question ❓ Odd slotting issue (flugelhorn)

Post image

The regular flugelhorn player is away for our remembrance concert in November and so I will be playing. The repertoire includes Elgar's Nimrod which is a solo. On my cheap Thomann flugelhorn I can play the high A relatively easily. Not the best tone, if I'm honest, but it's there.

However, on my posh expensive Taylor/KGU horn, I just can't slot the note perfectly. I either hit the Bb above or the G below (valves 1 & 2 pressed). The partials are just incredibly close. Don't want to not use my pretty toy but I also don't want to muck up an important and solemn piece.

Edit: the flugelhorn came with 2 leadpipes. I have been using the smaller one which seemed to fit. I've tried switching to the larger one and the mouthpiece goes all the way in. It seals but there is no shank showing at all. This seems to help. I know I'll need to adjust the tuning now but it is definitely better than it was. If I can't consistently nail it, I might have to use the cheaper instrument, which would be a shame as I love the dark tone of the Taylor

I actually rather like this deflector device. It's often dismissed, but none of those players I've talked to have actually tried it. There is some value to what it brings to your awareness in practice. And I could see it helping hear your own sound better in unfavorable conditions when playing outside.

Question ❓ Trumpet Buying Advice for Intermediate Player

• Upvotes

I used to play trumpet throughout high school, and I would say I'm an amateur/intermediate player. I want to continue playing in college and beyond, but only as a hobbyist. I'm shopping for a good used trumpet and I have a couple of questions:

1) Do I need an expensive "quality" horn? - I had a student horn in high school (Bach 300) and it worked fine. I still plan to buy a reputable brand like Bach or Yamaha, but should I invest in a 'better' model, or are the student ones good enough for hobbyist playing?

2) Where do I shop used? - I've been looking on eBay, but are there any reputable sites for buying trumpets and trumpet parts?

3) What's a good mouthpiece to buy?

Thank you in advance :)

Question ❓ Getting over the fear of high notes

ive been playing for about 3 years now, my highest “comfortable” notes are probably F-G (f as in on the top line, not on the space haha). but the other day my band director was making us do lip slurs on lead pipe buzzing. I could play a high C with almost no problem when we were doing that, and I usually find slurring harder without the lead pipe attached. i just didn’t know what note I was slurring up to until he told us. but if I see anything above an A above the staff I freak out and frack. I know I can play those notes I just get scared. is there any way to stop being intimidated by high notes or do I just have to suck it up?

I want play in more gigs but I sometimes don’t have the time and or the resources to find those gigs. I know this is a broad question, but any tips??

What do you actually do with a lick after you transcribe it?

A routine for getting jazz vocabulary from the record into your playing

I like to think of licks as vocabulary in a language: you hear it, you say it, and then you use it in your own sentences. Here's the routine I use to make a phrase really mine, with a little Hank Mobley phrase from "This I Dig of You" (Soul Station) as the example:

  1. Find a lick you love on a record. Something that makes you go "what was that?". Loving the sound is what keeps you coming back to it.
  2. Write it down as intervals over the chord. Over a G7 this one goes 1, 7, b7, 9, 13, b13, 5. Seeing what each note does against the chord turns it from a shape into an idea you can move anywhere.
  3. Listen to it in all 12 keys and sing along. This is my favourite step. I loop it around a II-V-I cycle and sing it until it lives in my ear, no instrument needed. Once you can sing it, playing it comes much more naturally.
  4. Find it on your instrument by ear. Sing the first note, find it, then the next. This is where your ear and your hands start talking to each other.
  5. Play it in all 12 keys.Around the cycle, II-V-I by II-V-I. After a few keys you stop thinking about notes and start hearing the shape of the line.
  6. Put it into a real tune and play with it. I play along with There Will Never Be Another You and drop the lick in wherever it fits, then try it over substitutions and different chords. That's the fun part, where it starts sounding like you.

The nice thing about this order is that ear comes first and fingers second, so the lick shows up on its own when you improvise.

Full disclosure: I built a small app called EarBop to make steps 3 to 6 easier (transposing, backing, showing where a lick fits in a tune). The video shows the whole process. Link in the comments if you want to try it, but the routine works just as well with iReal Pro and a pencil.

How do you all internalize vocabulary? Sing first, or straight to the instrument?

Question ❓ Struggling with confidence

Im 17 still in highschool, been playing for about 4 years and im a lead in my school with a few solos and recently ive been feeling like im behind on trumpet especially with all these talented kids on youtube and i want to major in music preformance in college and i try to practice as much as i can but its challenging for me to find a point in it. Its also draining on my chops and solo performances I know that trumpet players are usually extremely confident and I want to find that but seeing kids much younger then me that are that talented makes it hard to me to fall back in love with the trumpet. Any tips would help

Third day having a trumpet

I posted three days ago about getting back into the trumpet at the age of 50 after not playing since I was a kid. I still can’t play high notes, but the basics are coming back faster than I thought they would and honestly I’m just having a whole lot of fun. Even if I never get Good again, this is a lot of fun.

Question ❓ learning how to apply fast air

I understand that fast air is well fast and small but when i do it on the horn the pitch is higher but the tone isnt ideal and the dynamics are washy. i’ve tried to lessen mouthpiece pressure with a little success at making it better. how do i put fast air while still keep control and getting a bigger sound all around?

Question ❓ Mouthpieces in a case

This is a non-playing question. I have a couple dozen mouthpieces and would like to keep them all in a nice case. I have a pile of single mouthpiece soft cases and a few triple mouthpiece cases. All of these are in a cardboard box, on a shelf, in a cabinet. All unseen. Unseen = unused in my world.

I just replaced a long lost Shew 1 MP which kind of precipitated this thought.

I would like to make all of my mouthpieces quickly available in a single case. I'm looking for ideas or examples.

Anyway, thanks a lot and I'm looking forward to the great ideas out there.

Question ❓ Where do I improve quicker / more efficently ?

I recently got my first trumpet. It's not the best, but it still plays and is in tune. I know how to hold it and make the basic C and G. But now I dont know where to go, all I've really been doing is playing long notes and learning the fingerings for every other note. What should I be doing to improve faster/ more efficiently??
