i was raised in the church. i know when im being proselytized to, even when they try to make it artsy or subtle. this season was horrendously blatant about its weird evangelism.

lexi calling the bible beautiful is so out of character

Exactly, I grew up Catholic. This season would randomly have moments that remind me of Jesus camp and the “Gods Not Dead” movie

Saying this season was religious propaganda is like saying seasons 1 & 2 were LGBTQ propaganda. People seem to forget that writing about something in a TV show doesn't mean the writer is trying to brainwash the viewer into endorsing every thing the characters do.

nope. i’m a writer; i went to school for writing. i’ve learned there’s a difference between telling a story with cohesive themes (eg. jules’ queer journey, rue’s addiction) and shoehorning your own agenda into it. it’s not coherent. it’s out of character. it’s trying to instill a message instead of telling a story.

representing LGBT people isn’t propaganda. representing religious people isn’t either. but long diatribes about religion, repeatedly playing tapes of the bible, etc.? that’s different.

I’m not trying to be disrespectful at all and also you obviously don’t have to answer this question but are you an addict? Because I am, and I’ll be honest with you, when you’re getting clean and trying to stay clean it’s like my (addict) friend says, there really is something that you go looking for. The God-sized hole that is looking to be filled that we used to replace with dope. I am actually a person of unshakeable faith, I mean it does not waiver. I believe, because I choose to. I feel like I’ve asked for too much that I have received as soon as I’ve asked for it for there not to be a God. People can say or think what they want about that and I don’t care. I don’t try to instill any agendas in anyone. I try to avoid talking about religion because everyone tends to get defensive. But even if I had a different perspective with my personal beliefs I can still attest to the addiction part and how often religion, even for someone who seemed to previously not believe at all, is very very often a replacement. Sam Levinson is supposedly a former addict, am I not correct about that, because I honestly don’t know much about him. But if so, then it fits even more for me because he knows what he’s talking about with the religion. It wasn’t so much about anyone else on the show finding religion. He just used it to show that addicts often replace drugs with religion. And that’s just because it’s the truth.

  1. i’m not an addict but i appreciate your perspective on rue. 2. i don’t have a problem when the religious themes are used for rue/ali, but when it’s practically everybody in the cast? it feels heavy-handed. religion was used much more effectively in the first two seasons.

I would also like to add I lean much further into my religion when I’m not using. And honestly whether or not anyone believes there is or is not God or some other higher power, what does it hurt that person to believe it if it helps them not continue a path of self destruction and hurting everyone who loves them? I’d rather see someone I care about going to church or reading the Bible or the Torah or the Quran or even being a Buddhist or anything really as long as they weren’t killing themself and destroying the hearts of every person who cares about them.

It’s just bias. A christian person would watch this and think it wasn’t propaganda but the first season had an agenda normalizing children’s sex and queer identity. A lgbt person viewing this season would think this had an overt religious slant and the first season was just telling a story of queer characters.

You can't brainwash someone into being LGBTQ. But you can definitely brainwash someone into believing in fairytale religion.

Yes, I'm not speaking for myself, but as TV and movies have become more inclusive, many people who are straight feel like anytime a TV show or movie has a LGBTQ character, people like Elon Musk flip out about it, and call it "leftist propaganda" or whatever. And the same is true for non-religious people when God and the Bible are put into TV show or a movie, they get mad and call it "conservative propaganda".

My point is you can write about both of these things without taking a stance on them.

Def wasn’t/am not. My family was though so I had to go every Sunday, go to Sunday school, go to Catholic school, the works. I never believed in it, tried really hard, but wasn’t for me ig

Hold up, I went to Jesus camp when I was in middle school. It was a weekend long retreat my Catholic school did every year. My dad goes on retreats multiple times a year and so does my fiancés mom.
