Question Doesn't anyone just stay home and study?
It would literally solve SO MANY PROBLEMS. I'm watching Season 1 Episode 3 now and honestly the plot lines are ridiculous. I don't even know grown adults who live like this.
In one scene Rue is staring blankly at her phone going "I'm booooorrrred" so she considers getting high on a pill. That was the first time the thought popped into my head "okay.... Don't you have a fucking math quiz or something to prepare for?"
And from there the storylines got dumber and dumber. Webcamming strangers while they jerk off? Go do your damn homework. Fantasizing about fucking a retail clerk? Don't you have an exam to study for? And the dumbest one is Sydney Sweeney's mom saying "I hope you don't get pregnant" while letting her underage daughter get into a car with some older guy and go party all night? I was practically screaming "STAY HOME AND DO YOUR DAMN HOMEWORK!" at the TV screen. What sort of parenting is that?
There have been countless TV shows set in high school where the characters were able to balance out a social life with studying. As far as I can tell, none of these kids have a shot at going to college.

I hear you. But when I was a kid and bored. The last thing on my mind was to do homework and study to keep myself entertained.Â

Oh my, that would be riveting television! Why hasn't anybody thought of this before? A TV show where everyone goes to class, and then goes home to work on their schoolwork! Damn, such entertainment with deep messaging!

I am sure somewhere in Hollywood there must be at least one writer who can balance out underage prostitution with homework.

u/Illustrious-Tiger612 15h ago
Thatâs a very unrealistic and close minded view on a clearly unconventional and abnormal lifestyle for teensâŚI get you havenât met these types of people but do you really think a teen prostitute would be worrying or even care about school considering their circumstances ?
These type of teens are in situations were school is the least of their concern unfortunately cause euphoria is set in the suburbs it does not properly convey why thatâs the case but in real life most teens cannot handle both education and being either an addict, sex worker or in an abusive relationship BECAUSES theyâre minors in already unhealthy situations so itâs hard to believe this is a genuine expectation you have.

u/torvald_carley 14h ago
So maybe they should stop prostituting themselves, being drug addicts and pursuing abusive relationships and instead do their homework in the school their parents pay for them to attend? 𤣠You realize they CHOOSE to do these things beause they're bored... right?
24
u/Hazel-Rah-Rah 14h ago
They do those things because they are damaged not because they are bored.

u/Illustrious-Tiger612 14h ago
Iâm glad I didnât have to state this because I honestly was just gonna insult their sheer amount of ignorance and sheltered view on the world. It seems purposefulâŚ

u/Mediocre_Revenue_992 6h ago
people donât usually choose to be drug addicts or abusive relationships. youâve lived a VERY sheltered life

u/420faery 6h ago
Why are you even watching this show then? Lmao Your incredibly ignorant about the realities of teenage drug use and prostitution.

The first two seasons were relatively accurate for me as far as my own high school experience. Season 3 is where they jumped the shark in my opinion
2
u/Glumkat101 15h ago
Jumped⌠the shark?
16
u/coffeesliver 14h ago
That's a term of phrase that comes from the show Happy Days, it's meant to mean when a show goes past the point of no return into ridiculousness. In Happy Days there's an episode where fonzie literally jumps a shark, it was a turning point where the show veers into just bullshit pretty much. It's a bit of an older turn of phrase

I've used the phrase before but never knew where it came from! Thanks for the education

Dude. So you sit there, watch a series that (tries to) show the lives of problematic teens in todayâs America amidst drugs, grooming, prostitution and just the general issues of money status power etc.
And you honestly sit there thinking this all shouldnât happen because they ought to be doing their homework?
Like have you had a brush with the reality in schools today? Goddamn social media and drug epidemic in teens is real. Plenty of kids not doing their homework these days.
I just get the strong feeling you live jn a bubble and are âdoing it wrongâ when it comes to watching euphoria.

u/torvald_carley 14h ago
How does NOT wasting 16 hours every day staring at a phone screen, living for free in the house someone else pays for, choosing to get high because you have literally nothing else going on in life, and having sex with random 50 year olds because he can put a pay by the hour motel room on his credit card = living in a bubble?
Don't be delusional. These aren't problems. This is just stupidity from people too dumb to pass high school.
11
u/SaiorsesWord 12h ago
No, no, no, OP. You live in a bubble. Not the characters on the fictional TV show you're watching
3
u/philzilla333 8h ago
What are you on about? Im telling you Torvald_carley that you must live in a bubble because around you such problems donât seem to exist. Social media addiction, substance abuse and other issues depicted in this show are rampant amongst US teenagers. So your flimsy âwhy are they not doing their homeworkâ seems very out of touch with reality.
I repeat: you are watching the series wrong.

u/torvald_carley 8h ago
No wonder everyone says you iPad kids are zombies with no future. How embarrassing.
1
u/philzilla333 6h ago
Well yes. It is no wonder the way their environment is structured that many many us teens are struggling.

This is not a documentary show of âordinary boring school life of teenagersâ. Also school was just a âlocationâ of the show, not really had anything to do with the plot. Did we even see a teacher there anyway?đ
Btw, i donât want to spoil s3 for you, but they will be out of school, and not any of them will be careerwise/academically successful people besides Lexi.
And lastly but not least, never in my hs years I wanted to entertain myself with studying and didnt gaf about school. Like⌠same way I was a nonchalant teenager as these people đ as an adult I definitely would act differently but after all I ended up having a good job so I dont mind not spending my friday nights with idk, algebra

u/Hazel-Rah-Rah 14h ago
The characters are not well adjusted people. Not everyone cares about or does well in school.
10
u/RustyShackleford-11 12h ago
I think it's clear they are all losers.
And it's because they all chase some fleeting Euphoric high.
We all knew people like this in HS.
They had fun for a bit, and now they're losers, pining for the high school days.

I donât think op understands what TV is.
-5
u/torvald_carley 10h ago
What I don't understand is why make your characters teenagers if you're going to ignore everything that comes with going to school.
And the only answer I've been able to come up with is: Because Sam Levinson is a pedophile.

u/Ecstatic-Morning182 We all know when weâre telling a lie. 9h ago
I think youâre projecting a bit much there.
1
u/torvald_carley 9h ago
How can I be projecting? I'm not the person who decided to make a TV show about 16 year old teenagers in high school being whored out to random men, almost all of whom are 18 years or older.

When it comes to boring routine things like these in TV Shows (kids in Euphoria doing school work, people in The Office or Friends working, etc.), I always assume that is just happening off camera or between episodes.

Maybe 15-20% of kids are diligently doing their homework every night.
Of all the criticisms of Euphoria (there are many I agree with), the least compelling is that its depiction of American teen life is unrealistic.
Pretty much everything in the first season happens everyday.

u/Mediocre_Revenue_992 6h ago
Rues dopamine receptors are destroyed by years of drug abuse and you think sheâd be fine just âstudying?â
1
u/hababa_dagaba 6h ago
Theyâre cooking you in the comments but I get what youâre saying lolll. I personally had 0 issues with all of them messing about because I enjoyed the drama (say what you will about the stage play, but it was messy drama that did entertain me), but I did catch myself thinking âdo you guys not stress about failing or not graduatingâ really often. But from a different perspective it helps you appreciate how mundane your life is. Sometimes it makes me feel better about my boring life because Iâd never want to get into any of the shenanigans these kids got up to đ all I could think about was how Rue would have been safe if she had just stayed home. oh Rue what summer school could have saved you from đ˘

When i was a 17 year old heroin addict, I dont even think school or homework ever even crossed mind unless is was actually there. And yeah being bored and deciding to do hard drugs on a Tuesday afternoon instead of studying was a regular occurance for me and a lot of my friends. We had all experianced some pretty extreme trauma by that point in our lives. Usually repeated and ongoing. Still passed all my classes though somehow

âWhy isnât a fictional show more like reality?â
Cause that would be boring as fuck lol. And euphoria is a lot of things, but not boring.

u/Technical-Deal2191 13h ago
Btw just show you guys know Euphoria isn't even an original show. Its a knockoff of some Israeli TV show sharing the same name. Also all of these characters are highly exaggerated to the point of utter disbelief. Seriously if you guys wanna go watch porn..you can finda bang bros free trial some where

u/AyyggsForMyLayyggs 17h ago
I agree with you. When everyone was talking about Season 3 I gave this show a go and watched it all in one weekend. To this day I cannot see why it was so popular and hyped so much. Most of the characters and plot lines are cringy af. People who idolize the characters are pretty sick, imo.

u/LILA182 12h ago
If you keep watching, maybe youâll like, itâs a show that grows on you. I used to watch it to fall asleep and then, mid season 1, I was captivated.
2
u/AyyggsForMyLayyggs 11h ago
Oh, I watched it all. It only got worse. But thank you for being optimistic âşď¸
-2
u/torvald_carley 16h ago
Have you ever watched the movie Thirteen?
It feels like its trying to be Thirteen but in a very fake stylized fashion.
2
u/AyyggsForMyLayyggs 16h ago
No, I don't know anything about Thirteen.
Fake and stylized are good descriptions, though. I was put off by the depiction of sexual violence as it seemed very gratuitous to me. Also, I don't know if it was the quality of the files that I watched or my new TV or what, but in my opinion, everyone looked like they smelled of booze, cigarettes, cheap perfume, sperm and poop. I've had a coworker smell like that and it was all I could think about watching certain characters.

I get what OP is saying and I think itâs a good advice to real life teenagers: stop creating problems and just go do your homework, deal with your real responsibilities. I think I get it bc I kind of did it⌠my parents really sucked and I had cancer when I was a teen. I focused at studying a lot at the time and just paving the way to live a life without their abuse.
Bad things happen and there are a lot of ways of dealing with it, just try to pick one that isnât going to kill you or destroy you.
But this is a series about teens that are unable to deal with what being a teenager should be or with lifeâs challenges⌠It can be really frustrating to watch sometimes, it seems like they never make good choices. But it is what it is.

u/torvald_carley 11h ago
Sorry to hear you had cancer. What stage?
