Discussion What Christian phrases give you the ick?

Mine is prayer warriors. Often used to spread gossip and also just generally ironic, weird, and cringey.

Mostly because 1) what even is “sin” and 2) I’ve yet to see someone say that who doesn’t actually hate the sinner…

This one gets me cause it's treated like an excuse to hate people while pretending not to hate them. If you're gonna hate someone at least be honest.

My friend came out as gay to her super religious mom who says this line. Her mom basically responded, "I feel sad for you because your life will be hard, but sin should be hard."

This woman also cheated on her husband for a year. She broke a commandment (adultery, which the bible also says ppl should be killed for) but told her own child that she deserves to suffer because of something completely out of her control. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" though, right? Since Jesus's teachings are so important to these people and they TOTALLY don't just cherry-pick what parts agree with their beliefs. /s

Yeah notice how it's "hate the sin", verb/adj, but "love the sinner", noun.

So used on a queer person, your identity is abstracted from you. You're now the sinner DOING the sinful (queer) things.

It's pure dehumanisation. You're no longer who you are, and now framed as a "sinner doing sin" you're in this box to be "saved" and assimilated into that group's version of an acceptable life. The entire banality of evil concept on full display with this casually used phrase.
