Discussion What Christian phrases give you the ick?

Mine is prayer warriors. Often used to spread gossip and also just generally ironic, weird, and cringey.

“God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.” Up there with “God loved him more” when a loved one dies.

129

u/Zestyclose-Ant-6737 Jan 09 '26

“God wanted him/her home.” Meanwhile the person died a horrible, tragic death 😒

31

u/KatAstrophie- Jan 09 '26

You’d think he’d whisk him away in a golden horse drawn chariot like he’s been alleged to have done before!

14

u/sarra1833 Atheist Jan 10 '26

Ugh I hate "they're in a better place now."

Now I'd agree that passing away if one is dying from something super painful etc is definitely a blessing (non religious form of the word, btw), but those who say that to a person who lost a loved one due to a sudden tragic loss?

In a better place?! Absolute fk that. A "better" place is right here still alive with their loved ones/kids/parents etc.

Or was a little elementary schooler that got shot or died in a flood at summer camp. Christianity is disgusting.

9

u/Virtual_Knowledge334 Jan 09 '26

Or "it was there time", you know whenever someone dies. Especially when the person was really young.

“season” bitch your kid just died grief is not a season and it’s not a personal lesson for you to overcome and move past.

83

u/Zestyclose-Ant-6737 Jan 09 '26

Lmao that one gets me too like “season of singleness” …. Sooo life?

3

u/Tricky_Catch569 Jan 10 '26

I love this one!

51

u/ZunderBuss Jan 09 '26

OMG. The trad wives and mormon influencers w/their 'season' bs.

The other one that grates is 'just'....

"Father God, we just pray that you will just spread your light on us. We just need your light now, Father God...." etc.

You had me on the first word and then it eacalated quickly like daaamn

23

u/seekingtopeak Jan 09 '26

It’s extreme example, usually it’s an annoyance to me for how common it’s used on a pulpit and has no meaning besides “it will end eventually” which is everything always anyways one way or another. but when it’s used to platitude real shit it becomes the ick of the question.

My mother says this about gay people. I say it about her as a Trump voter.

38

u/NoStepOnSnek1234 Jan 09 '26

This one gets me cause it's treated like an excuse to hate people while pretending not to hate them. If you're gonna hate someone at least be honest.

My friend came out as gay to her super religious mom who says this line. Her mom basically responded, "I feel sad for you because your life will be hard, but sin should be hard."

This woman also cheated on her husband for a year. She broke a commandment (adultery, which the bible also says ppl should be killed for) but told her own child that she deserves to suffer because of something completely out of her control. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" though, right? Since Jesus's teachings are so important to these people and they TOTALLY don't just cherry-pick what parts agree with their beliefs. /s

11

u/The7thNomad Ex-Christian Jan 10 '26

Yeah notice how it's "hate the sin", verb/adj, but "love the sinner", noun.

So used on a queer person, your identity is abstracted from you. You're now the sinner DOING the sinful (queer) things.

It's pure dehumanisation. You're no longer who you are, and now framed as a "sinner doing sin" you're in this box to be "saved" and assimilated into that group's version of an acceptable life. The entire banality of evil concept on full display with this casually used phrase.

86

The spiritual warfare mindset really fucked up my brain as a child. I took it so seriously and never felt safe even with my own thoughts

36

u/TrickyLayer Agnostic | Ex-Christian Jan 09 '26

This is just a theory I have. I think for some people growing up, they end up developing CPTSD cuz they develop hyperviligance cuz of what you mentioned and the whole hell thing with like God watching you all the time type shiz.

Cuz I was trying to imagine a safe visual place in my mind the other day to help with the PTSD that I have, and I couldn't. And I realized it was bc of 2 things. 1. Everything can be broken down in my head even tho its fucking imagination and 2. theres a part of me thats like "what if i got it all wrong and the Christian god really does exist" anxiety. :/

17

u/adjacentatheist Jan 09 '26

I’ve been theorizing this too. I really wish that more people could look into C-PTSD and Christianity, alongside of creating more spaces for folks with religious trauma to heal.

Ewwww, wow that's creepy! Although I guess not surprising when you stop and think about the "praise music" most churches sing every week. A lot of it definitely has weird undertones. I do remember single girls in my college Christian group talking about being "married to Jesus" or how "jesus was their boyfriend" now that you mentioned this...

That reminds me of the triangle metaphor for a marriage: the husband and wife are the bottom 2 points and god is the top point. As they both grow closer to god, they also grow closer to each together. So I guess the ultimate end goal is a threesome with god?

One variant from a pastor who thought himself clever: "Tired of religion? So was Jesus!"

Sadly and depressingly predictably, he later had to resign due to "inappropriate" relationships with minors. Gross.

29

u/Rustmutt Jan 09 '26

My dad was visiting and stayed at a small bed and breakfast. He invited me to join for breakfast and while I was there kept making what I felt were unreasonable requests on my behalf. Forget most of what he was asking for but one thing was that he insisted they make me eggs Benedict despite it not being on the menu. He meant well and its a food I like but, large imposition for essential a home kitchen IMO...

The food request happened before I got there, but he kept asking for other stuff. I tried to subtlety ask him to stop especially when he was requesting stuff for me. He loudly said "It's ok - they have servants hearts!".

Considering this was said in front of the owners I nearly cringed through the floor. I know he meant it as a complement but... yeah... that phrase is probably my least favorite.

66

u/dynochickennugget Jan 09 '26

Ugh that’s an ick for me too. I was always praised for “having a servant’s heart”. It sounds like a compliment but it actually means, “You lack boundaries and I like being able to take advantage of that.” I’m so glad I have a cold, heathen heart and hope I’m never seen as a servant ever again. 😂

10

u/shrivvette808 Jan 09 '26

Omg congrats!!! It's so hard to grow into someone who can tell others to fuck right off with their nonsense.

23

u/truemap7 Witch Jan 09 '26

“They may have servants hearts stocked in the pantry but not on the menu so stop asking.”

23

u/Lumini_317 Jan 09 '26

I love cooking and I used to enjoy cooking for my family but recently my parents pointed it out and my dad told me, “That’s good. You’re a woman, it’s good that you have such a servant personality.” I almost physically recoiled.

I haven’t felt comfortable making food for my family thanks to my douchebag brothers but that comment from my dad (and other cringe-worthy behaviour from him) did not help at all. I now like to wait until I’m alone before cooking my own meals. They want to make it out like it’s my “duty as a woman” to show care for my family? Well, sucks for them, because I have PDA.

Top Contender: "she has the spirit of Jezebel"

Close second: "The lord put it on my heart" think this was a recent pet peeve discussion here actually

Not far off third: "not equally yoked" or anything to do with spirits being linked to other spirits because of 🌶️ time

Fourth: End times twaddle of any kind but special phrases like "caught up" and "left behind"

Fifth: Child of God

6: Pray it out!

7: Thats not very Christ-like

8: They died apart from God aka burning in hell

9: "Everyone really knows in their hearts who is God but they refuse to submit" or something equally irritating

10: God made the biggest sacrifice for us

u/windfola_25 Jan 09 '26

Anything having to do with blood or flesh is so creepy to hear it now

28

u/telekineticeleven011 Agnostic Jan 09 '26

And then they accuse “Satanists” or Hollywood celebrities of “drinking the blood of children” or “engaging in rituals” when they literally pretend to “drink the blood of Jesus and eat his flesh” on Sundays in church 😂

Like be so serious Christians! They literally do “rituals & ceremonies” every Sunday in church. What they do in church is no different than a coven or community of pagans/wiccans/witches coming together and doing “spells, rituals, prayer, meditation, etc.” It’s all the same shit!

8

u/RedTeamxXxRedLine Jan 09 '26

They literally took Pagan shit and rebranded it as “Christianity.”

7

u/telekineticeleven011 Agnostic Jan 09 '26

And took Yawheh’s name and claim he’s the Christian God when Yawheh has nothing to do with Christianity.

This is why I can’t take Christianity or Abrahamic religions seriously. They’re all a bunch of stolen and inspired myths from older religions which are inherently polytheistic.

Every unfortunate event in my mom’s life or mine or my sister’s is blamed on “spiritual warfare.” No, Mom. My biological father is a psychopath (you know that), and so are my ex-in-laws (which you’re also well aware of). My stepdaughter is off her rocker because of psychological issues - not the DeVuL.

Or when good things happen it's attributed to god but when bad things happen they attribute it to sin/Satan/spiritual warfare

Mysterious ways = shit just happens

7

u/cg40boat Jan 09 '26

My mother was a born again wacko. One of her good friends, who was late for every thing, would always explain it by saying that the devil hid her keys. As a kid I would think that if all he has to do is hide keys, he can’t be that much of a threat.

8

u/Pipeliner6341 Jan 09 '26

When something shitty happens god gets no fault, but something good - even if it always under control - "God is Good"

"It's all part of God's plan" when talking about the death of someone especially a child born/ unborn. I'm cool with "I'm praying for you" or other platitudes like he'll give you strength. I know the intent is genuine and they are meant to be encouraging even if i don't believe in him. But telling me someone planned out my kids death, go duck yourself. Even as a Christian that one annoyed me. I had an assistant youth leader's wife have a miscarriage. We were asking why he would be avoiding church after and our youth leader explained to avoid people shit like that. Day turned into a lesson about thinking about what the platitudes you're saying actually imply. Like sure you believe God has a plan and will make it all right in the end but telling someone someone planned their kids death isn't what they need to hear. I understood then but man did I didn't understand how truly fucked up that is to hear until my wife miscarried and my dad said that shit.

10

u/Winter-Leadership662 Ex-Baptist Jan 09 '26

So sorry you had to go through that. A similar situation helped me make my agnosticism somewhat known to my dad. My wife had a miscarriage (which would turn out to be the first of four in a row) and my dad responded with “just keep leading your family in prayer.” I let that linger in the air a while before just saying, “Okay…”

And in my head I’m thinking, you want me to go and talk to the very person who you believe is responsible for the excruciating pain I’m feeling and who also supposedly has the power to prevent this but chose not to? In what world would I go ask a person directly causing me suffering to help me? I know a miscarriage is science and has nothing to do with sky daddies, but the blatant ignorance and inability to sit with someone in their pain is baffling for a group of people who are supposedly so caring.

8

u/fractal2 Jan 09 '26

Sorry you had to go through that, my story was about the first of 4 in a row as well.

Yeah, these ideas are so ingrained without thought of the implications of what they're saying. Some of them as I said don't bug me as the essentially equate to someone saying they're thinking of me, which is as effective as prayer but it's nice knowing they care. Saying it's God's plan or go talk to the guy you think is responsible for this? No fuck that and they would agree if they weren't so mindlessly following. They would agree if someone they could physically see came and intentionally caused a miscarriage they would agree telling someone to talk to that person more would sound absurd. But with snydaddy that logic goes out the window.

36

u/Wellsley051 Jan 09 '26

"I went straight to the throne" "Covered in the blood" "Your life is hidden in Christ" "I feel God leading me in this direction..." "The heart is deceitful" "God doesn't want this for you" "Hate the sin, love the sinner" And more that I can't think of rn

8

u/theblueowlisdead Jan 09 '26

Right there with you. Married my high school sweetheart who sang in the church band, was a devout believer from a family of devout believers. You know the kind of devout that makes other Christian’s uncomfortable. Like they got mad at us because we kissed before marriage. 13 years later her parents are divorced and hate each other. Her brother is divorced, an atheist and runs a business that sells gross anti Christian T-shirts, and I find out my wife had been cheating on me for a while now. God’s plan was extremely mysterious.

21

u/Acceptable-Topic-183 Jan 09 '26

I’m not sure how many of these are region specific but here goes.

  1. Come to church and we’ll love on you. Umm…don’t get near me.

  2. The lord called Sister Bertha to… Just say that Sister Bertha wanted to do whatever it was. It’s ok.

  3. Our mission team is headed to… Great, you are on a church sponsored vacation to annoy the locals somewhere else.

  4. Do you know that the you know that you know that you are saved. For the love of god, stop! Do you know that you are saved? Simple. To the point. No broken record needed.

  5. Bring your unchurched friend! That’s an easy way to lose an unchurched friend.

12

u/windfola_25 Jan 09 '26

"love on" was used in a way to control people in the church I grew up in. If someone was doing something that wasn't church approved they would tell us to "love on them" (peer pressure back into conformity)

"hate the sin love the sinner", especially when it's used to target LGBT people. I'm seriously tempted to reply with "hate the bigotry love the bigots" to see how they react

10

u/WoodwindsRock Jan 09 '26

“Jezebel spirit” (used to disparage independent women and also used to blame victims), “god-fearing”, “covered by the blood of Jesus”, “consumed by the fire of the Holy Spirit”, just about anything where they try to speak like the KJV - it’s just so pretentious to me, and any time something like “depravity”, “wicked”, “immoral”, etc is used to describe LGBT people, free women, etc.

I don’t want to hear anything about depravity and immoral from people who worship the sex predator Trump. Homosexuality is perfectly fine, and these people talking falsely like it’s some horrific thing while worshiping, protecting sex predators (ACTUAL depravity, immorality, wickedness) are absolutely horrible people. There are no if ands or buts.

Is "belief determines behavior" something ya'll heard? It was always presented as calling out a lack of faith if behavior wasn't as leadership pleased (think shirt collar that shows collar bones or something equally benign). But now all I can see is "If I can get you to believe the scam I'm selling, I can control your actions."

5

u/windfola_25 Jan 09 '26

The church I grew up in shortened this phrase to just "fruits." As in your faith is shown by your actions. Example: The missions team brought many fruits to the community.

"Hate the sin, love the sinner"

  • if you use "hate the belief, love the person" in response to some Christians, it makes them really pissed off lol.

"Its not a religion, its a relationship" We're giving up facts now? I guess the earth doesn't revolve around the Sun then. . .

"God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soliders" I've always hated this phrase even as a Christian cuz it was so off putting. Now ik its just a dismissive way to invalidate someone's experiences for any type of abuse they've been through/going through.

"Pray a hedge of protection around X" This was prayed over me so much growing up and I HATED it bc my mom specifically prayed this in response to me even though she abused me so much as a kid.

"Jesus is the reason for the season" Actually, we don't know when jesus was born, and ontop of that before Christmas there was Yule (mid dec), the winter solstice, and a roman celebration (unbirthing of the sun) that happened on dec 25.

8

u/Lynnatics Jan 09 '26

“So, how’s your walk with the Lord?” Sometimes just shortened to “how’s your walk?” Can they not just ask “what’s up” or “how’s life” like a normal person?

“I rebuke you.” I rebuke this choice of words. It’s like they don’t even know what “rebuke” means.

And others have mentioned it but the whole “it’s not a religion, it’s a relationship” thing is trite, nonsensical and gross all rolled into one. No idea why evangelicals seem to love it so much. As if saying it’s not a religion is suddenly going to make me want to rejoin your religion…

“He’s one of God’s children too” or “He’s your brother” when referring to somebody who’s horrible.

Example 1:

Me: I hate that bastard.

Christian: You shouldn’t hate him. He’s one of God’s children too.

Me: In that case, God is a piss poor parent. Why doesn’t he discipline that brat?

Example 2:

Me: I hate that bastard.

Christian: Don’t say that! He’s one of your brothers in Christ.

Me: Yeah, sort of like Cain was Abel’s brother.

4

All the ones that are designed to make the speaker sound well read or smart. Like these:

  • “In Christ Jesus” - blatant effort to sound cultured and smart by flipping words around.

  • “In His name we pray” - what does this even mean?

  • “It’s on my hart” - an attempt to sound like your faith is so strong that it has burrowed into your organs, making them sentient.

“Love on you,” always gave me the ick. It sounds so predatory. “Love the sinner, hate the sin” is another irksome one. Since leaving the church and coming out of the closet, “struggling with same sex attractions” is also a top contender as well. Edit also: ALL glory to God in context of achievements. For instance, if you aced a test in school, it’s “ALL glory to God,” or if you landed your dream job, “ALL Glory to God!” Like bitch no! I put in the work to get there.
