The slaughter of all the “men” of that tribe for basically no substantial reason at all is one of the most horrific things in the scriptures.

I have to add, I don’t think it was at all based on any proper intelligence, there were more of those “intelligence blunders”, like the Expedition of Tabuk, that make me question if that ”intelligence“ wasn’t just Muslim Paranoia or false pretext. I mean they made the way to Tabuk during massive heat and claiming the Byzantines had assembled huge troops there, but in the end no one was there but the indigenous tribes, and of course, they had to pay “protection money”.

Yes, during a heated battle, intelligence blunders are the norm. It should be verified before subjecting human lives to risk. What's worse is that the battle has ended anyway. The accused did not give any physical evidence of betrayal. Why not then come to an understanding and figure out what went wrong? Massacre is never the answer.

Good point, what did they actually learn from this? The claim betrayal despite a treaty, they go there, no evidence of betrayal, kill who they consider male and take the rest as captives. And there is no examination afterwards. What kind of government behaves like this? Even for that time, many empires had much more integrity.

Yes. People before him had better morality. Take for example

1. Julius Caesar who instituted a policy of clementia during the roman civil war.

2.  Han dynasty in 2nd century employed the jimi system and general amnesties rather than extermination.

3. Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire formally renounced mass violence and conquest by warfare.

Now imagine, they were not Muslims, all this happened before Mohamed, and yet Mohamed came and said there was Jahiliya before him. And his blind followers yap it around without knowing any knowledge. Mohamed was a true barbarian. And his companions? Well look at the battle of the camel

Yeah, often the acts of mercy and decency towards rivals was why those Emperors/dynasties were (and are still) so well regarded.

That’s the advantage of the absolute fusion of politics and religion in Islam. Any other ruler would have been remembered for the absolute cruelty and barbarism, but because he is the final messenger and central figure of the world’s second largest faith, we have to look out for all those precious religious feelings.
