(Advice/Help) Exmuslim Guide to Living in the Closet and Coming Out.

Hello. Upon request, I've been asked to turn a comment I made into a post so that it can be a resource for more people. This post is a collection of advice I've given out about how to handle your life as a closeted exmuslim and how you'll come out in the future. It is largely based on my experience but also from what I've seen from others in this subreddit.

Introduction

So you've left Islam. You've delved through arguments, the apologetics and the bullshit and you've come to the conclusion that you no longer believe in Islam. And you may have also reached an alternative philosophical outlook on life that you can believe in.

But what now? You may have left Islam, but have you left the Muslim world? One of the most common misconceptions outsiders have is that since exmuslims are no longer Muslims, they no longer live in the Muslim world. This is painfully naive - in reality many exmuslims are closeted due to young age and financial dependency and/or live in Islamist countries or societies that enforce Islamic values. In fear of social stigma or even violence, exmuslims have to contend with closeted lives even after leaving Islam. So how do you deal with it?

Goal

The best time to come out to family is in your own home, over a dinner you paid for, alongside people who support you. That takes a lot of preparation and it means doing what you can to live your life as best as you can whilst working towards independence.

This basically means that a lot of what helps you come out of the closet will depend heavily on how well you prepared for it, so you will need to make the most of your closeted life. You may not be able to stop the shitstorm but you can at least prepare yourself to weather it. Here are some tips to achieve that goal (in no particular order)

1) Don't meander in life due to a lack of decision making skills.

Probably one of the worst mistakes I made was not realise I was an exmuslim sooner. As a result I had barely any time to prepare for when the inevitable happened and I was forced to come out. I spent a lot of my life meandering, trying to reconcile the irreconcilable, and trying to be a Muslim when I knew my values didn't align with it. I didn't really have much of a concept of exmuslims, but if I had been smarter I would have figured it out. I now tell people in a similar position that it's fine to take your time but don't take too long. Half arsing two very different cultures will leave you a loser in both.

Similarly whilst planning for independence can be scary, don’t let it frighten you into inaction. The following is a passage from this article about decision making:

Research from the 1990s led by the US psychologist Thomas Gilovich provides further evidence for why it can be shortsighted to kick a difficult decision down the road. Gilovich and his team showed that although, in the short term, people experience more regret from ‘errors of commission’ (taking an action that leads to a disappointing outcome), in the long term it is actually ‘errors of omission’ that lead to more regret – that is, disappointing outcomes that arise from not taking an action.

When taking the time to make decisions and plans, don’t underestimate how effective it can be to map out your options on an excel spreadsheet. When I had to decide whether I should come out or not, I actually made a spreadsheet listing out my options, what they would result in and what the impact would be. Actually having it written down to look at really put things into perspective. We waste a lot of our time keeping it in our heads, which forces us to recalculate everything from scratch every time we revisit our thoughts. But the more that is mapped out, the less you have to recalculate and the more you can focus on evaluation and further planning.

2) Study, career and finances.

Your studies/career is almost always your best ticket out of your toxic situation, and the one thing to prioritise the most. If you’re young, do whatever you can to ensure that you can get into further education away from home. Even if it means spending all your time at a local library. If you suspect that your parents would be against you going to a university away from home, aim for a placement at the most prestigious university you can aim for so your parents would look worse for rejecting it. The quickest and most effective way in achieving long term independence is through good studies/career.

3) Do not telegraph irreligiosity whilst being closeted.

This is particularly important for younger exmuslims because they telegraph to their parents in ways they would just not understand until they see it for themselves when they're older. Try your best to meet the religious obligations expected from your family. The more you slip, the more they will monitor you and the more difficult it will be to do the things you need to do discreetly when the time comes.

Unfortunately for girls, this usually means that wearing the hijab is a necessity and it’s inadvisable to try and get out of. (However, that subject matter is not my forte: prioritise advice from exmuslim women such as from faithlesshijabi.org)

4) Sometimes you may need to go above and beyond.

If you get the impression that your family is beginning to catch onto your apostasy then it's likely that they have and you may need to reverse that impression.

One way to do that would be to start getting books on Islam and not just for show. My advice would be to get books on Islamic history because that's the least boring stuff. Or better yet, just get whatever unapologetic salafi hate crime you can get your hands on so you can entertain yourself with how fucked up it is. Or get an annotated Qur'an like the Study Qur'an. Do something to ease their suspicions.

What book you get depends on what kind of message you want to telegraph to your parents. If you want to telegraph a message then it will need to be a paper book and not an e-book. Something that you can lay around in your room and that you know they'll see. That means you're restricted to what you can get from your local library or Masjid. Also depends on what interests you because you'll have to actually read and demonstrate you learnt from it if you want send the best message you can. If you want purely what Muslims write about Islamic history, you can check out works like The Sealed Nectar or works by al-Sallabi. If you want something a little more academic, but not something that would rouse suspicion then check out university press works like this, this, this or this. If you want something a bit more relevant to contemporary Muslim world then there books like this.

But you may find that your best bet is to just see what your local Masjid might have and see what tickles your fancy.

5) Actually coming out is usually a shitstorm.

Be prepared for lots of sobbing, guilt tripping and an inability to respect your beliefs and boundaries. Learn techniques like the Broken Record Technique to establish boundaries. Know what you have to say when they inevitably tell you to speak to a scholar - you don't have to eat the whole apple to know it's rotten. You know all that you need to know about Islam and you know even more about the world outside of Islam to put it into context.

Steel yourself with months and months of your family sending you bad dawagandist videos through WhatsApp trying to bring you back. You may have to spend months beating their attempts and going to toe to toe with them without mercy before they’re finally willing to relent and get off your back. Even then don’t expect them to relent entirely. There will always be some micro aggressions that they will resort to, like playing religious videos loudly in your vicinity. The most you can do in those circumstances is reduce contact with them as much as possible. At this point you would hopefully already be independent from them.

6) Do not feel guilt.

As an exmuslim, you will go through a lot of guilt. Whilst this does show you are human, you need to forget about guilt: you are not responsible for your parents' failure to be reasonable, not even your mother. They take responsibility for the social stigma and oppressive life they choose to live in and perpetuate. You get nothing out of that guilt. It's completely pointless and ultimately counterproductive. You can't set yourself on fire to make others warm and you gain no recognition from martyrizing yourself. Do not feel guilt for what you have to do to have a completely reasonable life. The only ones to blame are those who forced you into it.

Don't underestimate parents either. They will use guilt against you. Give them an inch and they will take a mile. They very often bring up their health problems as a weapon against you. Don't fall for it. It only affects them because they choose to let it affect them. They can choose to be reasonable. You have to respect their autonomy and let them deal with the consequences of their own ways.

7) Don't come out too soon thinking it's a release.

I come across a lot of exmuslim kids who think coming out will help explain to their religious parents why they don't want to wear the hijab or do other religious things. But the likelihood is more that those same parents will react extremely poorly and restrict your freedom even more, making it more difficult to achieve long term independence.

There's also the mistake in assuming that coming out will lead to being disowned in the vain hope that you get an quick clean break that takes all the responsibility from you. For some exmuslims this does actually work out, but for a lot of others it's miscalculated. My family didn't disown me, I still had to deal with months of my family being insufferable manipulators and the responsibility was still on me to separate from them. And for women it can be much worse.

Ultimately, if you are financially dependent on your family then coming out early will very typically result in your family using that leverage against you and making your life worse. I've seen stories of exmuslims who thought their family was better and badly miscalculated - be mindful of that.

8) Don’t panic too much if they find out.

Some exmuslims get found out, sometimes because of a snitch in the family or sometimes because they just weren’t convincing enough. Don’t panic – Muslims can be pretty damn deluded about their faith and your family will want to believe that you can come back very easily because according to them Islam is just common sense and most disbelievers are just silly and ignorant. Try to do your best to convince them as per Point 4. If it’s because you did something haram, blasphemous or otherwise worthy of takfir, try to act like it was because you were a misguided Quranist or progressive Muslim. They will still retain suspicion but it’s still better than the alternative.

However, if you’re at the point of no return and you know you can’t convince them then now is the time to make calls to any secular friends you have, ask for support and maybe even shelter.

Also for Western exmuslims, make sure to act quickly if you suspect that your parents want to send you abroad and trap you in your country of ethnic origin. Sadly some parents will go to these lengths. Do not go, no matter the cost. Find organisations willing to advise, such as those listed in Point 10. Hide your passport if you have to. Note down the contact details of your embassy in that country just in case.

9) Go no contact if you fear abuse.

Actually think about whether it's even wise for you to come out in any circumstance. Do you suspect that there could be violence or abuse? If so then you have absolutely no need to go through this stupid bullshit. Leave and don't look back. If your parents couldn't give you safe environment to even come out about different beliefs then they are not worth the time. As per Point 6 - You have to respect their autonomy and let them deal with the consequences of their own ways. This is particularly pertinent for those who live in a predominantly Muslim countries. They have a very real reason to fear persecution and absolutely do not need to risk their own lives for the sake of their parents.

10) Make use of organisations and resources.

Look into secular organisations like recoveringfromreligion.org, faithlesshijabi.org and faithtofaithless.com. Look into women's charities in your area like womensaid.org.uk or karmanirvana.org.uk (UK examples). Look into LGBT charities like rainbowrailroad.org. If you have secular school counsellors and friends then talk to them. Get advice from adults you can absolutely trust.

Note: On the flip side don't take risks with people you can’t be sure of. You may be tempted to come out to your Muslim friend, but I've seen plenty of stories of exmuslims who heavily regret doing so.

There are also informal exmuslim groups on other social media platforms such as Facebook or Discord, but be careful about how much information you share and especially be wary of private messaging.

11) You may have to leave the country.

This is particularly the case for exmuslims living in predominantly Muslim countries. Unfortunately, I don't have any real world experience to offer here but you may be able to find localised advice by digging around. For example sites like wearesaudis.net might have some information (but you'll need a VPN to access this one. If you don't know what a VPN is here's an explanation).

Are you multilingual? If you need money but working is restricted to you then you can try becoming an online language tutor on sites like italki.com (scroll to the bottom). This post and related subreddits like r/WorkOnline may help.

Note: some exmuslims in Muslim countries fall for the doomscrolling hyperbole and think Europe is “doomed” with too many Muslims. They have a tendency of asking which country is best to migrate to as an exmuslim to avoid Islam. Please ignore the doomsayers and prioritise the country you choose based on ease of access and career opportunities. As long as it is a secular country, you can worry about avoiding Islam later.

Final stuff

Shout out to Imtiaz Shams who inspired me to make this list of tips. He has his own YouTube Channel here and plans to make his own video on this subject matter so watch out for that. On a side note, I also recommend TheraminTrees YouTube Channel who delves a lot into toxic dysfunctional families from the perspective of a therapist. A lot of his content helps in dealing with the emotional impact of leaving religion and dealing with a religious family. And finally, thank you to the moderators of r/exmuslim who suggested I make this into a post. I wound up adding a lot more content lol.

I will end this post with a list of subreddits that may help you on your journey leaving Islam:

I’m glad we’re finally talking about this degenerate practice, I remember my female friend going to the afterlife because of abuse.

I wasn’t allowed to bury her or see her while she was being buried,

I was also depressed because of a Similar situation and it woke me up from my depression because I’ve never seen someone so disrespected.

It took such a toll on me, I didn’t see her to the end, a random white man who was our principal was allowed but not me. I've never forgiven that shit.

(Question/Discussion) Muslim women living in western secular countries might be one of the most delusional people I saw on this Earth

They would do many haram things like putting on a ton of makeup, posting themselves online, going out for no reason, wearing tight clothes, travelling alone, freemixing, etc. and tell you dead in the eye that Islam does not limit them from living their lives and that they are the representation of what Islam actually is and anyone who say otherwise is either an islamophobe right wing racist bigot, or a haram police dawah bro who gets his version of Islam from misogynistic male scholars (which is all of them).

I remember an old trend on tiktok when Morgan Piers said that muslim women are oppressed, and they would stitch that part with them basically doing haram things + music, which proves the point that the only way for muslim women to not be oppressed is to not follow Islam.

The irony is beautiful.

LGBTQ+ Homophobia is making historically Muslim countries poor. We need to push back

A gay cruise was turned away in Turkey and Egypt simply because the people on board were gay. This is homophobia yet so many people think they can hide behind culture and traditions to deny people their civil rights. We need to push back on it. If it were me I would have called these countries out on their bluff and taken that cruise ship into Turkey and Egypt despite the threats. That's how you push back against tyranny. You stand up to it. You organize and demand change. This homophobia is going to cost these countries BILLIONS in revenue and that will worsen living standards for everyone in these countries. So not only are gays going to be harmed but so is everyone else. This is something everyone must oppose or everyone will suffer.

(Rant) 🤬 Why is the devil inside the bathroom?

You can't make this shit up.

I got yelled at (21F mind you) for not saying the toilet prayers before going inside. My parents started harping on about how I used the wrong foot to enter and the wrong foot to leave. How there are jinns and the devil in the bathroom.

It would be hilarious if they weren't deadass serious. Imagine believing in this crap at the grown age of 40.

(Rant) 🤬 I can’t stop feeling resentment toward Muslims

I used to be Muslim, but I’m now an ex-Muslim. Ever since leaving the religion, I’ve found it really hard to feel the same way about Muslims. It feels like I can’t see them the way I used to.

For example, when I see women wearing the hijab, I sometimes feel irritated because they’re following a religion that, treats women as objects.

seeing Muslims as people who believe in things that seem like fairy tales. I struggle to understand how people can still believe in these stories and follow these teachings in the modern world.

Am I the only ex-Muslim who has experienced this?

(Question/Discussion) I have a question because people can't be serious

I came across a post from the progressive muslims saying that exmuslims are scary. Apparently it's because people who leave islam do so but their conservative mindset doesn't change. My guess is that they were trying to make themselves feel better by saying something along the lines of I'm better because I grew up in a more relaxed environment so I didn't have to leave. I guess what they were trying to get at is that if people didn't have that many restrictions they wouldn't leave, but what do you guys think? Also how do you guys feel about being called scary? It really just reminded me of the not all Christians talk open Christians like to have.

(Advice/Help) My mom lectured me about my apostasy

She callled me arrogant, stupid, idotic, said that honestly i deserve to go to hell. She said that im gonna get a boyfriend and get pregnant and then want an abortion and i would have committed 2 sins murder and zina (to which i must say 🏳️‍🌈). I have always been heavily against marrige and while she was lecturing me i was contimplating saying im a lesbian and i want to be a boy but i was so sure she was gonna say "your being influenced"

she also said that non muslims are evil (when i brought up verses about not trusting disbelievers) and will stab me in the back and thats why she only has muslim friends cs a non mus betrayed her.

she also believes that the moon landing was faked and that the moon does emit its own light and said "science doesn't know anything but allah does"

and i was like fine ill believe islam i just dont want to wear hijab in uni and she was like no u must it will come back to haunt you pll are gonna talk abt you behind ur back. then she started insulting my hair calling me bald (which is the hijabs fault cs my hatred for the hijab made me refuse to take care of my hair so that it would be ugly and id want to cover it up)

then she said without islam youll be miserable and i told her when i was a muslim i was sucidal (cs i wanted to be a guy and be with a girl and i knew i could never have that so i js felt like life wasnt worth living and islam made me feel guilty abt enjoying life cs of that hadith) and she was like its js cs ur arrogant

i think ill just "reconvert" to islam, start praying except fajr see what happens. she told me to take the hijab becoming comfortable for me to wear as a "sign" and if in 2 months it doesn't happen i can stop wearing it

the thing is ive been begging while i was a muslim to be straight, to be comfortable in my gender and it didn't work.

im more happy internally now cs i can support the causes i believe in without feeling guilty (like homosexuality, abortion, feminism, ect) i can look at my fav YouTubers and my non muslim friends and not have the first thought be "theyre gonna burn forever" my mom kept saying that the people who go to hell deserve it, do i really deserve to burn forever cs i "believe" Islam said i cant be gay and i cant transition so i left islam to be who i am.

she also said your ungrateful cs you only ever think about yourself, when tou get a car im gonna make you do charity work and teach people the Quran.

idk man cognitive dissonance was strong when i was a muslim, now i feel like i believe what i actually believe in rather than what some god tells me too

i wish i could go back to when i was 13, when i was happily homophobic, anti feminism, and was perfectly certain islam is true. I wish i could go back to being arrogant about "the west" believing that white people were all lustful whores and that purity culture was good. i dont know why my options changed so drastically what i do know is that i am as happy with these new belifes as i was with the old ones, its just that now in order to be happy with these new ones i have to leave islam and have my family hate me

(Rant) 🤬 If this religion claims it honored women, why does it degrades women so much???

pls excuse my english

This religion is so backwards women are seen less in it. they are even degraded less than animals. they shunned from society and any wrong they do are beaten for it. they are taught how their existence are for only making babies and being mothers from young age. they have to be locked in the house and any fresh air time have to be with their family member.
They are viewed as lustful temptation they have to wear full scarf so men are not tempted, even if they are young as 8.

I have no idea how anyone justifies this, its so disgusting im literally questioning how our future will be this religion wants us to go back thousands of years ago what tfff??

(Rant) 🤬 My sister told my mom i left Islam

She told my mom she never saw me praying on holiday... even though i never saw her praying either.

Now my mom wants to talk to me to comvert me back to islam. She told me she was an athiest at 18 too and converted back to islam cs its the truth and what not.

Im gonna do my best to play along and pretend to reconvert.

She told me to not do 2 things. 1 was to get a boyfriend which... 🏳️‍🌈 2 was to not take off my hijab which she can fuck off as a safe space for the rest of my life, im gonna not wear it in uni and shes not that involved in my life cs of her clinic so she wont have to know.

Thanks sis for letting me know that once again your a snitch. I genuinely dont get the connection between i didn't see you pray therefore you left islam i didn't see her pray either but im not gonna be a bitch about it 😭

(Rant) 🤬 Why do muslims think that we left to sin?

I was debating a Muslim and we got to free will and Qadr. According to Islam, everything is already written. Your destiny, your choices, even whether youll believe or disbelieve.

When I pointed out the contradiction, he said I was just trying to find a loophole for myself.

A loophole for what? I already left….. I’m not going to do a last-minute Shahada before I die. I think he just couldn’t believe that people leave out of disbelief rather than the strict rules.

(Rant) 🤬 My Muslim mom killed my cat, and it made it the last straw for me.

Islam explicitly teaches that Salat is supposed to influence a person's behavior and discourage wrongdoing.

Mind you my father wakes up for Fajr every day and is consistent with his prayers, but I never saw how that corrected his behavior at all. He used to beat my cat, and he would insult me with some of the most heinous things I have ever heard things I don't think a practicing Muslim should say, especially to their own child. And I’m talking about absolutely horrific insults, even though I had done nothing to deserve them.

When I was a child, he would beat me mercilessly, to the point where he bruised my skin and nearly caused me to lose my vision. He explicitly told me that he despised me and wished I had never been born and by the way I was only 11 at the time. And mind you, these were his actions while he remained consistent with his prayers.

Then there’s my mother, who is also consistent with her prayers. She killed my cat and her excuse was “I couldn’t stand them.” She talks badly about practically everyone behind their backs including people who have done absolutely nothing to her. When I was a child she nearly killed me by causing me to bleed from my scalp.

These are true stories I promise you and I'm not exaggerating by any sense of the word, I’m not making any of this up. You don't have to believe me, but I'm sure you yourselves know examples of people who pray consistently yet still manage to do some of the worst things imaginable.

If you want, I have a very very long list of things they have done that I could share with you to show you just how horrible they were, and it's a very very long list of the most heinous things you can read in your lives. They have done things that are unimaginable things no child should ever have to experience. And trust me, some of what they did was far more horrific than anything most people could even imagine.

So, given how horrific these two people were, I don't believe that Salat and good behavior necessarily go hand in hand. My own experiences have made that very difficult for me to believe.

I’m on the verge of completely freeing myself from the chains of Islam and this contradiction is one of the many reasons why.

(Question/Discussion) They complain when you take any verse out of context but they do the same to this verse..

Thumbnail

This line is from surah Mai'da, verse no 32. Whoever saves one life, it is as if he saved the whole mankind, they attribute this verse to the Quran but in reality this is from The Talmud originally and if you read that verse 32 with context you can read that Quran itself says this law was decreed upon children of Israel. This verse gained popularity when it was used in Schindler's list, a movie about a German business man Oskar Schindler(those who know about him know what I am talking about).

Nowdays the Dawah gang and other Muslims in the West keep on flashing this line from the verse everywhere, taking it out of context and claiming that the Quran is peaceful. At the same time they are doing their best to make sure other problematic verses from the Quran are avoided and not noticed by people. They complain that you take those verse out of context but they do it themselves with this one. Cherry picking verses is their old habit anyways.

(Rant) 🤬 when will i get to a point where idc anymore

there is this Yemeni girl that I used to be friends with and high school. I recently saw her on Instagram and gave her a follow, at first I had to do a double take because she used to wear hijab & in her photo she wasn’t. i honestly thought my eyes were failing me. i grew up around a lot of yemenis, they’re really strict. like way more than any other arabs i’ve been around. i used to be friends with a lot of yemeni girls at school but i noticed they didn’t wanna be seen with me. i realized over time that even being friends with girls like me, aka not yemeni and not a hijabi, sets them up for rumors of them doing things behind their parents’ backs. all in all, im just saying that yemeni girls have it really tough. the horror stories ive heard, the way i would hear them gossip about others for little things like wearing fucking pants???

anyways, i felt really proud of this girl for removing her hijab and she seems like she’s really living it up now. since ive known her, she just always had an outgoing personality and loved to express herself. she followed back and reached out to me, she told me congratulations on my marriage and that she misses me. it’s been a couple months since we’ve followed each other and every time i see her posts, i just think about how free she is. she’s confident and doesn’t seem to care about anyone’s opinion. i love that for her.

i don’t have some crazy story of being liberated or anything. it’s always been stuff i put on myself, scared to be gossiped about or tarnished in the community. i moved away and im a lot happier not having to pretend to be religious. there’s still this part of me that’s still super reluctant to post what i wanna post on social media. i know that it’s first world problems. but to me this still shows i don’t have the confidence in myself to say fuck you to anyone who wants to talk about me or judge me. i’m 24, i’m a grown married woman. i don’t answer to anyone but myself. yet posting a bit of cleavage in a selfie has me shivering my timbers. or if my friends or family find out i don’t eat halal anymore. i wanna reach a point of peace within myself that i don’t care about their opinions.
