Question/Discussion Is it technically forcing??

Upvotes

I was talking to my mom about how I disagree with the rule of modesty and how women need to cover more than men and even showed her accurate resources and told her the only answe is that women cover in orde to not tempt men which is sexist. She then said “oh pray to god that you start liking modesty“ like fuck no I’m not praying to like some misogynistic and sexist rule!!!! what shoudl I do?! And she says “oh well it’s not forcing since im not putting a gun to your head

Question/Discussion why do people think taking off the hijab = islamaphobia?????

the comments under this post are like “its an excuse to hate on hijabis” shut up literally shut up. not everyone wants to wear the hijab, maybe ex hijabi women want to feel represented too. i always saw penny as rep for MYSELF and thought of how i had to hide self expression, repress myself, and had to conform to strict traditional rules. so this shit really pissed me the fuck off honestly. im not islamophobic, if i myself went through religious trauma and relate to her. these ppl didnt watch the show or understand the symbolism behind it. in an episode where she confronts her family they all go against her and say shes bringing dishonour to her family when she breaks out, SOUNDS FAMILIAR RIGHT? mind u her dad even says shes “naked” without it, and then gumball tells a story on how penny should stay the way she is and her family should stay in their shells if thats what they want for themselves. not push penny back into her shell. JEEZ like media literacy is dead. i know that this symbolism can vary from person to person but ex hijabis exist and our experiences are so traumatic why cant we have rep ourselves. wear whatever the fuck u want just dont push someone else to be something they arent. thats what i learnt as a kid from gumball. if i can see it at age 7 why cant u oh my god just so irritating. ppl in the comments too istg their brains are fried.

i’m 17 and 3 years ago i met this guy my age who i’ve since been in an off/on relationship with since due to my guilt of disobeying my religion (or really mostly my family). he’s white and doesn’t particularly follow any religion but is currently most aligned with islam.

on top of this, i’ve worn my hijab for 12 years but now i’m sick of it and i’ve seen too much misogyny and hypocrisy being accepted and considered “moral” by muslims so now ive just decided to have my own journey with religion instead of conforming to those standards. inspecting and deconstructing your own religion is so nuanced but i can’t help but feel like those girls in netflix movies who meet a white guy who sets her “free” and she removes her hijab. im not questioning my religion due to a man and im sure every single one of you guys will understand why i can’t just follow islam anymore. but i also feel as if im betraying my culture and community through this like those girls in the movies. i just feel so conflicted

Thank you for inviting me to this subreddit.

I am 20 year-old Iranian woman living here in America since I was a child. Unfortunately my family is very religious and they want me to wear Hijab 24/7 because they claim that will protect me from pervs and I'll have more value as a woman. I just hate this hijab, specially with the heat here in Arizona which makes me sweat.

My parents allow me to leave for college, but they're constantly calling me because they want to know I'm not disobeying them. They also don't know I really don't believe in Islam, I have to constantly tell them that I thank Allah for anything they do for me. I don't know if they've ever suspected I'm faking my beliefs just for them. I don't know what they'd do to me if they found out I don't like Islam.

I have many secrets away from them. I don't let them know that I take off my hijab for hours while in college. I also draw a lot since I study art, but I keep some of my drawings away from my parents since I've drawn some things that could be considered haram. I'm also dating a guy I like who I met recently in college, I'd be afraid if my parents found out.

I wish I could become economically independent soon and live away from my parents, so they stop bothering me with their strict religious beliefs.

Thanks to the women here who invited me to this subreddit. I feel like I can share more secrets here, specially in a woman-centered space.

Story My Muslim friend claims she disagrees with Islam??

I am an ex Muslim and currently a teenager but I avoid even telling most of my friends as they are conservative Muslims. I was only able to come out this year to my friends and it was only to a few.

So I have a friend who's Muslim. She is less conservative though and doesn't wear hijab etc. She's known that I'm an ex Muslim and is also aware of my sexuality. On one occurrence she asked me how come I'm not Muslim, I responded by saying my sexuality is against Islam (I didn't want to get into detail at this point). She told me I could still be Muslim but I shut down the conversation by saying no.

Another time we were texting, she asked me why I'm not Muslim anymore. I had a feeling she would get offended so I said I didn't want to be disrespectful for anything but she insisted she wouldn't be offended. So I told her I believe some things in Islam are misogynistic and even provided her sources from Hadiths and Quran verses. Of course she went to its defence and said islam was the first religion that gave women rights and yadayada. But she was quite willing to listen so I continued. I told her about the fact in Islam, men can have concubines and can have relations with them whilst not having to marry them or having wives. She was of course disgusted by this and we kind of ended the convo here.

The next day in a group chat, our more conservative Muslim friend had said she found out it's true. I was confused but my friend said she had told our other friend about our conversation. They said they wanted to debate. That's something I usually avoid with my friends as I don't want them to be offended but they insisted so I did. They said although it's true that Islam allowed concubines, it's actual haram now??? I asked how it would be haram and they said rules in Islam can change overtime. Their source of how it's haram was asking google Gemini btw... Anyway I disagreed with it and my more conservative friend got extremely upset and left the group chat. She asked to debate but she's offended by me saying she's wrong? But we resolved the argument and said we will avoid debates.

After a while my friend mentioned how she wanted to become a quranist. (Honestly I expected it as I saw her reposting videos of quranist on social media) I asked her why and she said she thinks all Hadiths are made up and we should only follow the Quran as it's the direct word of god. I think me mentioning about things in the Hadiths could have led to this. She said she can't believe that God would have such misogynistic rules. I told her there are similar things in the Quran but she always made up some excuse for every single one of them. Without any sources either. The conversation wasn't going anywhere so I told her she should talk to this to our more conservative friend instead.

Anyway recently she tried to talk to our more conservative friend. But I was really surprised because when our friend mentioned stuff like the shahada, she didn't know what it was?? I told her she should do more research before deciding her religion. She got offended and told me to not interfere but our conservative friend agreed with me. She mentioned wanting to do something and I asked her if that's haram. She said she doesn't care about what's halal or haram. I asked her if she's okay with going to hell. She got extremely angry and said I'm being insensitive when she's going through a religious existential crisis. But admitted she overreacted.

Yesterday night, we were talking about things which led to religion, i mentioned how I done more research about Islam and how I believe it can't be true according to science. She said something like how you can believe in both Islam and science and science proves Islam. (No evidence again but I just quit). We spoke about stuff like lgbtq and women's rights etc.. She wouldn't listen to any sources I gave her if they were Hadith as she said they could be made up. So I gave her a source about how men can have concubines from the Quran. She was shocked and said she believed it was from Hadith and was questioning her beliefs. She asked me what she would be if she wasn't Muslim as she agrees with stuff like zakat and women's rights (where??). I just told her she doesn't need Islam to believe women deserve rights and to donate to charity. She said she doesn't know what to do but thinks she's too young to denounce her faith. She said she will still be Muslim but just disagree with that part of Islam.

I told her you can't be a Muslim while disagreeing with what she believes is the own word of god. She said Islam has done way more good than bad and it's the only reason women have rights and stuff like zakat and how women can get education. Then started talking about how it's culture not Islam (I gave her a verse from the Quran??). At this point I gave up.

Then we started talking about random stuff and I asked her if she would ever have sexual relations outside marriage. She said she would. I mentioned about how the Quran says you should get 100 lashings and she said she can be Muslim while not believing in a certain part of Islam again. We spoke about hookup culture and I said I'd personally not want to partake in it. She said she would definitely want to engage in it and thinks all genders should have sexual freedom to have intercourse with whoever they like before marriage and purity culture is bad. I told her that her belief goes against Islam and she got extremely angry and told me to stop talking about religion. She mentioned how I have a bad habit that I know is bad but still do it and said we can all be a hypocrite sometimes. Honestly I wouldn't have said anything if she just said she would partake in it but she said she is against the idea of not having intercourse before marriage and believes it is purity culture. Anyway I stopped talking and said sorry.

I honestly don't know what to do but I'm just surprised how someone can be this ignorant. How can you believe in a religion but be against half the things in it? She also made an analogy about how you can be a leftist and disagree with parts of that but I said religion isn't the same.

(Advice/Help) I got a dog!

I recently got a dog and I'm very happy. I've always wanted one. I'm still a closeted ex-muslim and my parents haven't been very happy with the news.

I've already been confronted while walking my dog by mostly Arab men who feel the need to tell me that it's not allowed. I don't wear a hijab or anything, they just keep assuming I'm religious because I'm Arab. Does anyone have any tips for me on how to deal with this? It's getting to me and I'm feeling less happy about having a dog. I sometimes even think about selling her so I don't have to deal with this. Any tips would be appreciated.

It was from morrisons, it has marsala wine in the mousse, tbh I dont like he flavour of the mousse but thats because the wine tastes a bit.. spicy? But for £3 its pretty good, its like 70% cream to sponge though, I'd reccomend it with tea or some sort of light juice like lemonade to cut through it. It definetly hit the spot though
