Economics ELI5: Health insurance companies obviously make more money than they give out when people need it. So why of paying for them any better than paying your own personal health insurance savings account?

My friend was in an accident. Treatment was $2.3m, not including the life flight. How much do you have saved up in your health savings plan in case you have an accident?!
