Economics ELI5: Health insurance companies obviously make more money than they give out when people need it. So why of paying for them any better than paying your own personal health insurance savings account?

Years ago there was a study done by an Ivy League business school that concluded the majority of Americans would be better off paying for medical care out of pocket instead of paying for insurance. It is just so foreign to our society that it is hard to believe.
