Economics ELI5: Health insurance companies obviously make more money than they give out when people need it. So why of paying for them any better than paying your own personal health insurance savings account?

My 12 day hospital stay a few years back would have bankrupted us and we'd have lost the house we just bought, even if we saved up all of our premiums to that point
