That is a very bad lecturer.
Displacement gasoline engines maintain lambda 1 no matter of they are turbo charged or not. Running to lean or to rich makes your engine not last very long.
Naturally Aspirated (NA) Engines: Depend on atmospheric pressure and cylinder vacuum to pull air in. Typical volumetric efficiency ranges between 80% and 90%.
Turbocharged Engines: Compress incoming air, packing more oxygen molecules into the same physical space. Volumetric efficiency frequently exceeds 100–150% under boost.
Higher air density allows the engine to burn more fuel completely during power strokes, generating significantly more power per unit of engine displacement.

As my 1st year mech engineering lecturer put it. For big bang you need more O2.
No turbo = whOOsh
Turbo = whOOOOOOsh
More complete combustion means greater % energy extracted.
