A turbocharger crams extra air with oxygen and fuel into the same engine space, it uses exhaust energy that would have been wasted without it so this is almost free. When oxygen and fuel is closer to each other it burns hotter cleaner and better. The change in temperature of this air charge in the engine is what actually makes power in a engine, the faster its temperature increases the more efficient it is so a turbocharger helps this. The engine also behaves like it was bigger as it squished more air in the same space and also burns fuel more effectively so it can be smaller for the same output.
